While members of LSU’s men’s basketball team were busy with final exams since their last game on Nov. 29, Will Wade and his staff were taking care of business on the recruiting trail.
Wade’s goals on his three-day trip that started the morning after an 84-60 win over UT Martin: Find another player or two for next year’s class and make inroads with the Class of 2019.
“I was able to see some good players,” he said. “I did a little recon work on junior-college kids we can add in the spring, and another high school kid we can add in the spring. We were out going to three or four places a day, hopping around.”
Wade will have at least one scholarship available for 2018-19 after point guard Ja’Vonte Smart and power forwards Nazreon Reid and Darius Days signed in November.
But Wade’s work is far from over. He’s identified two spots that need shoring up to take the next step in his program’s development.
He’d like a lockdown wing defender with toughness, possibly a junior-college transfer, and a rim protector to go with 6-foot-11 transfer Kavell Bigby-Williams.
“I’m like Noah’s Ark; I want two of everything,” Wade said. “ ‘We need another one … we need another one.’ We need a little bit of everything.”
Defense, defense
When LSU returned to practice Sunday, the emphasis was again on defense.
The Tigers had a day off Monday before having five days of practices leading up to Sunday’s 4 p.m. game with UNC Wilmington.
Wade said he was working to change his team’s zone defense after seeing slight improvement against UT Martin although still LSU ranks 301st out of 351 Division-I teams in field-goal defense (47.6 percent) and 278th in scoring defense (77.7 points a game).
Wade said he wants to eventually play hard-nosed, man-to-man defense, but doesn’t have the pieces right now.
“If you can’t do that, you’d better have a bunch of different barrages you can go to and try to slow people down,” he said.
Sampson update
Wade said guard Brandon Sampson likely won’t be back until after Christmas although he’ll be re-evaluated after Sunday’s game.
The initial diagnosis on Sampson, who averaged 13.3 points and 5.0 rebounds before severely spraining his left ankle against Notre Dame on Nov. 21, was he’d be out 3-to-4 weeks.
But Wade said this week the best-case scenario for his return is the Memphis game Dec. 28.
“He doesn’t have to wear the (walking) boot at practice any more, so that’s a positive step,” he said.
Snow day
A couple inches of snow Friday brought a smile to the face of freshman guard Tremont Waters, a Connecticut native, but it was a first for senior forward Duop Reath, who is from Australia by way of South Sudan.
“Yeah, it was crazy. … When I went outside, I didn’t know what to expect,” Reath said. “I was excited at first, though I was like, ‘Wow, this is crazy.’ I went out and touched the snow. It felt funny, but it was good.”
“It kind of made me feel like I was back home,” Waters said. “I’m a lot more calm … I’m relaxed. I feel like I just want to stay inside and sleep.”
Wade chuckled when he talked about getting a first-hand look at how it freaks out Louisiana residents who don’t experience snow very often.
“People were driving with their flashers on,” he said with a smile. “It was like, ‘Oh Lord, what are we doing? This is not that bad.’ ”
