New England Revolution Put Together Clean Sheet In 1-0 Win Over Rival New York Red Bulls And Record First Shot On Goal By A Center Forward This Season

Something happened on Saturday that hadn’t happened all seasons for the New England Revolution.

A center forward recorded a shot on goal.

It was forward Teal Bunbury in the 55th minute recording a shot on target, coincidently it was also New England’s first shot on goal in the match.

The second and final shot on goal in the match? A shot by Cristian Penilla in the 73rd minute past the outstretched hand of Luis Robles to lift the Revolution over their rivals the New York Red Bull’s.

“He (Penilla) was in a good mood all day, when he came off the bench he was in a great mood. And he is even in a better mood right now.” Said Coach Brad Friedel on Penilla.

With the win the Revs move to 2-5-1 on their MLS season bringing their point total to 7 which puts them in 9th place in the Eastern Conference Standings.

The players know how huge the win could be for the team going forward and the icing on the cake was doing it against a heated rival.

“I think right now, any win for us is huge.” Said Cody Cropper. “We needed this win and at home in front of our fans versus a rival. On “Darby” day if you want to call it that, its chilling. Obviously it gives us goosebumps. It’s huge, it can be a momentum builder.”

It was a messy one at Gillette Stadium with rain coming down for much of the match creating a slippery playing surface for the players on the turf.

“The turf is slick, the ball is coming through fast.” Said goalkeeper Cody Cropper.” You really have to trust your instincts, you have to deal with that first ball early. And just believe in your teammates and believe that they are going to be there to help clean up if you make a mistake or help pick you up if you do make a mistake.”

First Clean Sheet Of The 2019 MLS Season

For New England this was their first clean sheet since 10/28/18 against the Montreal Impact and their first one of the 2019 MLS season.

“The goal believe or not in this game was the clean sheet.” Said Head Coach Brad Friedel after the game.”We’ve been leaking too many opportunities on quick attacks. We worked hard on the midfielders and we put Juan in a little bit of a different position. But we worked hard in training on that and making sure that far better back. That was first and foremost. I am really pleased that we got the clean sheet. When you have the clean sheet to build off of then that gives you confidence to create even more chances.”

The person in net for the shutout? Cody Cropper who recorded 5 saves tying his career and season high.

”Overall, I think we did the simple things right.” Said goalkeeper Cody Cropper.”Ultimately it comes down to winning the second balls, and winning the battle in the trenches, tonight we did that.”

For Cropper it was his first clean sheet since 9/9/17, which came against the Impact. The 26-year-old keeper plans on upholding a tradition started by Matthew Reis of bringing in donuts for the team after recording a clean sheet.

”Obviously I have the duty of bringing in donuts now, that Reisy started back in the day, so go to follow through with that. Teal is already telling me that I need to bring in like 48 donuts, so we will see how that goes.” Said Cropper

Quick Turnaround With Montreal Impact Coming In On Wednesday

No rest for the weary in New England with the Revolution set to host the Montreal Impact on Wednesday.

For the Revolution this win over New York can be a building block for them going forward with two more games coming up in less than 7 days.

“When you are near bottom of the league, it was similar before we played Minnesota. It was important to try to claw back teams that are in front of you. We had result with Atlanta go our way right before the game. And it was just very important with Montreal coming up, they are four points ahead of us, I know it is early in the season but just to keep in touch with everyone and the clean sheet will breath a lot of confidence. So we will try to build off that going into the Montreal game.” Said Friedel after the match when looking forward.

New England and Montreal will face off on Wednesday at 7:30 pm.
