MESA, Colo. (KJCT News)– The early season snowfall has made for some pretty sights at Powderhorn Resort. Staff says this year they have been snow making earlier than ever before. Now all departments are getting ready for that busy ski and snowboard season.
“We had that snowfall in October and then as a bonus it stayed cold,” says Powderhorn marketing and sales manager, Ryan Robinson, “This is a huge transitional time for us here. Food and beverage crews are getting ready, our lift operation staff is getting ready,”
Two storms came through last week: Thursday bringing in 8 inches of snow and Friday had 6 inches. The season snowfall came out to 3 ft. in total.
They say in the past five years they’ve opened their doors early twice, but they aren’t quite ready at the moment: “We want to make sure that that base is in good shape, that the snow cats have time to track pack the resort,” says Robinson.
For now staff says they are putting the finishing touches on the umbrella bar; a new place to relax and eat at the base of the resort.
“The views from the glass walls are just amazing, it’s fully heated,” says Robinson.
According to recent Powderhorn stats they average over 250 inches of light, dry powder each winter. The plan for now is to open December 13th.
