A pair of local events — one a longstanding tradition, the other a new event — are scheduled to mark the 20th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.
On Friday in Portales, the James Polk Stone Community Bank will have a community event in the bank’s parking lot at 109 E. Second St. The event is schedule to begin at 7:30 a.m.
Saturday morning will see Curry County Teen Court take part in the inaugural Flag of Honor Across America Memorial Event. The event will pay tribute to 2,983 victims from the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks and the Feb. 26, 1993, bombing of the World Trade Center.
Organizers will begin gathering at 8:45 a.m. at the Curry County Courthouse’s flagpole. The ceremony will begin at 9:02:57 a.m., the local time in New York City when United Airlines Flight 175 crashed into the WTC South Tower.
The teen court will be one of 60 founding communities. Each community will honor 50 people by reading their name, location, a short bio and their panel location at the 9/11 Memorial in New York City.
A release from Curry County said the event will be the largest nationally coordinated 9/11 day project and will involve both youth and adults.
