Margot Robbie prepping for Harley Quinn return, but in what movie? – SYFY WIRE (blog)

There has been a lot of DCEU movie news in the last couple of months, making the landscape of what’s to come from DC Films a little confusing (to say the least). Of particular interest are the film futures of Harley Quinn and The Joker, both of whom have three potential movies for their next appearances, and actors in Margot Robbie and Jared Leto, who are a bit confused by all the news.

After Leto admitted he’s “a little confused too” about his place as The Joker and what’s next on his own docket, it appears Robbie is in the same boat. The actress sat down with The Wrap for an interview during the Toronto International Film Festival, and when asked about Harley, she was enthusiastic about a return.

“I think next year, I’ll be back in the fishnets, wielding her baseball bat, I hope!” she said with a smile. But if you were hoping for clarification from her on whether that would be in Suicide Squad 2Gotham City Sirens, or Harley and Joker, well, the joke’s on all of us there.

“Your guess is as good as mine at this point, I don’t know,” she said, looking remarkably confused when asked to clarify.

Suicide Squad 2 was the first one announced, after the franchise’s initial outing was a box office hit despite a dismal critical reception. The nature of the Squad is one that can rotate out characters fairly easily, but with Harley and Joker (along with Deadshot) being the clear breakouts from the first film, it seemed a shoo-in that they’d be returning. The way the first film left off, with Joker breaking his erstwhile girlfriend/sidekick/abuse victim out of jail, they had their easy segue.

The actors involved all gave the fairly standard “we all want to come back” answers in the meantime. Now, Suicide Squad 2 even has a director, as Gavin O’Connor has signed on.

However, almost immediately after the sequel was announced, so was a movie tentatively called Gotham City Sirens. The film would star Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, teaming up with Catwoman and Poison Ivy for their own adventures as anti-heroes in Gotham City (based on the comic book series of the same name written by Harley co-creator Paul Dini). Robbie would produce and work on the story with Suicide Squad director David Ayer, who had an eye to direct the film. Updates on the project have been few and far between since its initial announcement, and it wasn’t on the big list of DCEU movies that had logos created for San Diego Comic-Con this past July. However, Suicide Squad 2 was on that list.

Finally, there’s the untitled Harley and Joker movie that’s reportedly in development from the directors of Crazy, Stupid, Love. Neither Warner Bros. nor DC Films has officially commented on the project following reports in the Hollywood trades, which claim it may arrive after the Suicide Squad sequel — though the timing would then seem to conflict with Sirens.

So what’s next for Margot Robbie? As she said, she should be back in the fishnets, swinging the baseball bat next year, in… something.
