OSU prepares for Army’s triple-option offense with discipline
Just a few days after falling to No. 5 Oklahoma, the Ohio State football team is more concerned with beating Army rather than dwelling on the loss.
“Now you have to move forward from the loss, because it’s a long year. So, the main focus is beating Army,” defensive end and two-time captain Tyquan Lewis said. “That’s our main focus right now, just beating Army. Just getting back to what we do, you know, plugging away.”
Army presents an unusual challenge to the Buckeyes as they run a triple-option offense, which is vastly different than anything they’re accustomed to opposing. The triple option is a read offense where the quarterback reads the defense and chooses to either hand the ball off, keep it himself or pitch it to a different back. The system puts emphasis on consistently pounding the ball on the ground, waiting for the defense to slip up.
OSU has struggled against the triple-option in the past, most notably against Navy. In 2014, the then-No. 5 Buckeyes allowed a whopping 370 yards rushing and two touchdowns on the ground to the unranked Midshipmen, who led the game at halftime. OSU came away victorious but had little success against the triple option.
In 2009, the then-No. 6 Buckeyes narrowly escaped a second-half comeback by the unranked Shipmen. OSU won 31-27, barely avoiding a massive upset that nearly came to fruition due to their inability to stop the triple option.
One man who has familiarity with opposing the triple option is OSU’s defensive coordinator Greg Schiano. While he was the head coach at Rutgers, his teams often played against Army and Navy. Schiano said he’s moved forward from the loss to Oklahoma in order to prepare for a unique challenge against Army.

“It’s such a different animal moving forward that we’ll deal more with regular football corrections a week from now on Sunday when we get done with the Army game,” Schiano said.
So how will OSU prepare for this “different animal” that is Army’s triple-option offense?
“It’s purely discipline-assignment football and then you have to physically do your job once you do your assignment, but if one piece is out of place it’s a potential big play,” Schiano said.
The Buckeyes appeared to have a few pieces out of place when the Sooners totaled 490 yards of offense against them on Sept. 9. The Scarlet and Gray hope to reconcile their defensive woes by attentively preparing for the challenge presented by Army’s triple option.
“You definitely experience pressure because you gotta be more disciplined now, especially with your technique — what you have to do,” Lewis said. “So, all those little things go in play with the whole defensive perspective of just being disciplined throughout the whole game.”
Linebacker and captain Chris Worley emphasized the defensive players’ necessity to play within the defense instead of trying to be individual heroes. He summarized the Buckeyes defensive struggles coupled with concerns about the challenges presented by Army’s triple option with a simple, yet profound assessment.
“It all comes down to people doing their jobs,” he said.
