Dawn Grady is the owner of Junebug Jewelry Designs.

She hand-crafts copper, silver and natural gemstones for one-of-a-kind jewelry pieces.

Grady is one of many small business owners throughout the Queen City who specially prepared for this holiday shopping weekend.

“Jewelry is a way that a woman can express who she is without ever saying a word, and that is what Junebug is designed to do,” Grady said. “Certainly this is the most important shopping weekend of the year, with it being Black Friday and Small Business Saturday following it, so I thought it would be very important for me to be open and give people an opportunity to see the jewelry firsthand.”

Sandra Guild with the Better Business Bureau said there are 23 million small businesses in the United States that will be participating in Small Business Saturday.

“Every 68 cents of that dollar that you spend in those local stores are going to stay within your local community. A lot of those businesses are owned maybe by your neighbors or somebody that you know,” Guild said.

Business owners say spending money locally is about more than getting a steal of a deal.

“We are here. We are going to be the ones supporting the restaurants. We will be the ones putting our children into schools. We are going to be the ones who are buying the homes and living here, so supporting us is really making an investment in the community around you,” Grady said.
