Yankees prepping quiet Aaron Judge, Giancarlo Stanton experiment – NJ.com

TAMPA, Fla. — Outfield instructor Reggie Willits didn’t want to get into specifics. Manager Aaron Boone said, somehow, he’d keep his giants “behind the scenes.”

The Yankees are currently devising their plan to get Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton work in left field — away from prying eyes and game action.

For now, anyway.

Stanton showed up to Yankees spring training at George M. Steinbrenner Field on Friday. Judge has been here a while, rehabbing following his offseason right shoulder surgery. They’ll get a chance to work together for the first time Monday, when position players will gather for their first practice of 2018.

It seems unlikely that will be the first day either Judge or Stanton (natural right fielders) shags flies in left field — a position neither has played professionally, though Judge played some in college.

But it will happen sooner than later, and the Yankees might try to keep it far from media and fans at first.

How Yankees prospect got shot in January

Currently, the Yankees are expected to rotate Judge and Stanton between right field and designated hitter. Though it might make sense sometimes to give regular left fielder Brett Gardner off days, particularly against tough left-handers.

Boone will task Willits with coming up with the best plan for the duo.

It won’t be easy for either of them, said Willits, a former Angels outfielder. They have the skill sets to adapt to the position, though, he said.

“In general, any guy that’s played a lot of right can move over there,” Willits said. “It’s about getting them used to angles, seeing the way the ball is going to come off a little differently and the way it’s going to move a little differently and stuff like that. Both guys, if they’re asked to do it, they’re going to be athletic enough to pick it up quickly.”

It will be especially tough at Yankee Stadium.

“There’s a lot of room to cover out there. It’s a lot like playing center field,” Willits said.

Boone has faith that Willits will make it so that the manager will be able to call on Judge or Stanton to play left field when finally necessary.

“I’ve talked about my coaching staff a lot in glowing terms and one of those guys is Reggie Willits,” Boone said. “This is a guy that’s an impactful guy, an impactful coach and I know that he’ll put a plan in place for both of these guys to get their best work in, and then as I’ve said all along, both guys will certainly be part of the process, part of the decision making.”
