Next man up

To find out how the new defensive players will fit into their roles with the Penn State football team, ask the guys they are replacing. Linebacker Jason Cabinda and safety Marcus Allen will be missed, and their replacements have a lot to figure out before the first game of the season.

Land of 10’s Audrey Snyder writes that Cabinda and Allen will wait and see how much freshman like Micah Parsons develops in the spring to determine how quickly the Nittany Lions can replace some of the defensive mainstays.

Stepping up

Penn State’s NCAA Tournament hopes took a major hit when forward Mike Watkins was injured late in the season. The Nittany Lions did win a couple of games in the Big Ten Tournament, including beating Ohio State a third time, thanks in part to Watkins’ freshman replacement.

The Centre Daily Times’ Ryne Gery writes that John Harrar has made the most of his time since replacing Watkins in the lineup. Penn State takes on Mississippi State in the NIT semifinals on Tuesday night.

No guarantee

What would another NIT title do for the Penn State basketball program? If history is any indication, not much.

Though Nittany Lions coach Pat Chambers says his program is “building consistency,” the Daily Collegian’s Thomas Schlarp writes that despite a possible title, Penn State needs more than consistency if it wants to cash in on another deep NIT run.
