MONROE, La. (KNOE) – DOTD is beginning to prepare for some icy conditions in Northeast Louisiana. Marshall Hill, District Engineer for District 5, says they’re focused on making sure bridges are safe.

“Our primary concern is I-20 and I-20 elevated, which is 2.5 miles of elevated roadway in front of the civic center,” says Hill. He says they’re also going to be heavily monitoring the Vicksburg Bridge.

They’re telling people to be especially careful driving on bridges with metal grating like the Louisville and Endom bridges. “It’s hard to salt that metal grating, so you just have to be careful when crossing those,” says Hill. “You know traffic moving back and forth helps us with those, you know, helps keep it dry.”

He says they’ll have drivers out in the area checking for slick roads. And if they’re too dangerous they’ll radio in a truck to salt the bridges. “A couple trucks have sensors on their trucks,” says Hill. “And they’ll ride the bridges to determine the temperature of the bridges.”

Hill says engineers will continue monitoring the weather and traffic cameras from their communications center starting around 8 pm. Depending on when the temperature begins to drop below freezing, they’ll start putting salt out.

“The key on a lot of the salting operations is timing,” says Hill. “If it’s raining a lot, and you can’t really salt because it’ll wash it away if you put it out a little too early, and if it’s not raining the trucks will blow it off the road. So what you want to do is hit it just minutes before the event happens.”

DOTD will make the decision whether to close roads and bridges sometime after nightfall, starting with I-20 exit ramps near the Civic Center and Saint Francis Medical Center. “We close some ramps on I-20 immediately, some that are the lesser used ramps that have a steep incline, we’ll make a decision whether to close those,” says Hill.

Hill is asking people to be careful driving around DOTD crews and to stay back a few extra feet from trucks salting the roads.
