MARQUETTE, Mich. (WLUC) – Events like the Noquemenon Ski Marathon are what make Marquette a popular destination for winter sports. Race Director, Jason Rolling says preparations for the race are underway now.

All revenue from the race goes right back into maintaining the vast Noquemenon Trail Network, which this year, is easier said than done.

“Mother Nature has been a little rough on us this year. So the trail is in very rough shape. It’s some of the best snow we’ve ever had. But we have a lot of trees down,” Rolling announced.

So Rolling, the rest of the NTN staff and a force of volunteers will have their hands full between now and race day making the course ready for race day.

“We’ve got crews out every single day into the evening until midnight working on that,” Rolling declared.

The NTN also recently purchased a brand new state of the art groomer.

“It’s safer. It’s faster. It leaves a better track. It’s more efficient. It’s all those things,” Rolling exclaimed.

The finish line returns to the Superior Dome this year, after races ended just outside of Marquette last year.

“We’ve got the full marathon which starts at Al Quaal in Ishpeming and ends at the Dome. We’ve got the half marathon that starts at CR-510, halfway through the course and finishes at the Dome. We’ve got a 12 km race. It starts at Forestville. We’ve got a snowshoe race it starts at 510, a 15 mile run and finishes at the Dome,” Rolling shared.

The Junior Noque events will take place Friday evening.

“Then we have our Wild Side of the Noque events on Sunday which includes skijor events with the dogs, snow biking and the snowshoe event. It is an all-inclusive busy weekend for sure,” Rolling asserted.

The Superior Dome would be a welcome sight for skiers that made the 50 kilometer trek from Al Quaal across what is called some of the most beautifully rugged U.P. terrain that Marquette County has to offer.

Whatever event you’re training for, Rolling encourages participants to register early.

“Registration is up this year, which is great. We like to see this event grow. It’s all for the community,” Rolling stated.

Rolling also says applications for a variety a volunteer roles will be accepted during the coming weeks.
