“The street department will fix the bigger holes on the arterials first, so those are the ones we try to get to in 24 hours, then we try and get to the rest,” said city spokeswoman Marlene Feist.

All in all, with the mild start to 2019, city crews were actually able to get a great jump on pothole repairs, filling in almost 1200, the majority of which done in January.

“We had some great weather in January for pothole repairs,” she said, “if you remember we all thought Spring was coming early, so those winter crews once they were done de-icing around nine in the morning would go out and start on pothole repairs.”

According to the city, in 2017 and 2018, they were able to fill roughly 4800 and 4600 potholes, averaging out to about 13 a day.

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. — South Main Street in Wilkes-Barre is getting in the St. Patrick’s Day spirit.

The road is sporting a green line for the city’s parade.

Paradegoers are ready for the celebration.

“I’m down for it. Yes. Not to mention, my birthday is around the corner, a couple days after. I’m a March baby. I’m here for the parade,” said James Carrier of Wilkes-Barre.

This is the 39th year for the Wilkes-Barre parade. It begins on South Main Street at South Street and then makes its way to Public Square where it will end.

The city’s special events coordinator says there were more than 100 participant applications.

“I’ve only been doing it three years, and that’s the most I’ve ever had, so I’m very excited about that,” said Patty Hughes.

Business owners in downtown Wilkes-Barre say the St. Patrick’s Day Parade is always a busy time for them. This year, they’re hoping the weather cooperates.

“Usually, we’re closed. We hope to be open on Sunday if the weather cooperates,” said Dominic Buonsante, owner of Dino’s Pizza on South Main.

“Maybe some sales that day. The bars probably make out better than anyone, but the restaurants do alright, too,” said Hughes.

Buonsante is worried about the rain that’s in the forecast.

“I’m hoping the weather will change, and there will be maybe a shower here or there, but I look forward to it every year,” said Buonsante.

Paradegoers say rain or shine they’ll be out enjoying the parade on Sunday.

“I love it when the community comes together and a parade that’s what it shows. When I was a little kid growing up, that’s what I wanted. I wanted the parade,” said Carrier.

The parade will start at 2 p.m. on Sunday.

There will be limited on-street parking during the event, so be sure to arrive early to find a spot.

LINCOLN, Neb. The recent string of frigid weather may make you want to run for the hills but for many Nebraska runners, it’s marathon training season. With the Lincoln race less than two months away, the still frozen ground means a slower start for many.

For many runners training is year-round but a string of snowy months means hitting the pavement has taken a backseat and for some that can mean being less prepared and more injury prone.

Running indoors on a treadmill is a familiar set up for marathon trainers in the winter months.

“This time of year with the cold weather that we’ve had and this winter that never wants to end we’ve had an influx of treadmill runners, marathon, half marathon runners coming into the facilities,” said Steve Auxier who owns Good Life Fitness in Lincoln.

Those endless miles in place can take a toll. In some cases causing stress fractures.

“Metatarsals in the foot, or you can get them in the hip or femur,” said Auxier. “A lot of times those come from over training. Some individuals that train for full or half marathons it seems like they are always training for various races throughout the year but aren’t allowing that body to have a recovery phase.”

One local marathon training group meets three times a week outdoors, snow or not. They do say running in the cold is not ideal but the group accountability makes it worth it.

“It’s not always fun I will say that,” said Amber Stettnichs. “Your eyelashes freeze but it’s really an accomplishment just to go out there and run, and when you get get it done you feel great after.”

If you aren’t brave enough to brave the cold yet, Auxier says varying up your indoor training will keep you race ready, while avoiding injury.

“Vary up the speed, maybe add some incline, do a little bit more hill running, flat running, or more decline running,” said Auxier. “That way you get a little more variety to prevent some of those medical issues such as stress fractures and over training issues throughout the body.”
