A research and development division at Sony has unveiled a new contactless cryptocurrency hardware wallet for cold storage, which could indicate the consumer electronics giant may be eyeing a bigger move into the cryptocurrency space.

The research and development arm of Japan-based Sony Corporation, Sony Computer Science Laboratories, Inc. have issued a press release revealing their work on a contactless cryptocurrency wallet for storing cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin, and more.

The wallet uses the company’s contactless integrated circuit technology for an added convenience for investors. Traditional cryptocurrency hardware wallets like the Ledger Nano S and Trezor wallets are USB-based, but its wallet would allow the user to ditch the cord and sign transactions from any device with a near-field communication (NFC) chip.

The company has said that the wallet will be “small, portable and useful, unlike typical existing hardware wallets,” and will feature a “highly reliable tamper-proof module within the IC card” for increased security.

While Sony Computer Science Laboratories is the company’s research and development division, and many of the subsidiary’s projects don’t end up being released as a fully-fledged product for consumers to purchase, the press release suggests that the company will push towards “commercialization” to further the “widespread adoption of blockchain technology,” hinting that the company is planning a bigger move into the world of blockchain and cryptocurrency.

The DOT also is responsible for filling the shed with salt.

“The state purchases and stores its own salt, and then we draw salt from those sheds for use on the state highway system,” Winnebago County Highway Commissioner Ray Palonen said.

The new shed will have a capacity of 2,500 tons of salt. For reference, last winter the Winnebago County Highway Department used 3,487 tons of salt on I-41 and 4,400 tons on other state highways.

Palonen said the building will be ready in time for wintry weather.

“We’ll have salt in there this fall, hopefully in November,” he said, “but the parking lot area will remain gravel until we can pave that next year.”

No trucks will be kept in shed. It’s strictly for materials, Palonen said.

The salt shed is not the only new element along the U.S. 10/State 441 corridor. The construction of a diverging diamond interchange — the area’s first — is nearing completion at the intersection of U.S.10/State 441 and Oneida Street in Appleton. It is expected to open to traffic between Nov. 5 and 15.

The Bears (3-3) will look to snap a two-game losing streak Sunday when they host the New York Jets at Soldier Field. The Bears dropped from first place in the NFC North into a third-place tie with the Lions with last Sunday’s 38-31 loss to the Patriots.

The Bears and Lions trail the Vikings (4-2-1) and Packers (3-2-1) in the division. Also on Sunday, Minnesota hosts the Saints (5-1), Green Bay visits the Rams (7-0) and Detroit hosts the Seahawks (3-3).

Where does your own interest in the intersection of astronomy and computer science come from?

I’m one of those people who could never decide whether I wanted to do computer science or astronomy. Computers are these wonderful things because it’s creation without boundaries. When you write a piece of code, it’s like building something, building a new world in that computer. It’s almost artistic. That was very appealing, but on the other hand I wanted to understand the world and I wanted to figure out how things work in the world. So I sort of flipped the coin and did physics. When I got to Princeton, where I did my Ph.D., the Sloan Digital Sky Survey was just starting. I thought, “Wow, there’s a tremendous amount of data, and people were struggling with understanding those data.” I realized at that point that my dreams came true: I don’t have to make a decision anymore whether to do something computer-related or astronomy-related because this type of environment requires both.

Does all of your astrophysics work relate to algorithms and computer programming?

I would say it’s a means to an end. I spend a lot more time focused on the algorithms themselves, but I mostly like to use those things to actually find interesting results. I’m driven by answering problems in astronomy, but I want to make sure I do it in such a way that the next person can build on what I’ve done.

You mentioned the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. How does LSST build upon that?

Sloan generated I think a total of about 10 to 20 terabytes over its history, in terms of imaging. LSST does that in a night. In terms of the number of objects, Sloan was an order of 500 million stars, [observed] once. With LSST, it is going to be about 20 billion stars, and every one of them is likely to be seen 825 times. We’re going to be looking at time domain. It’s a huge volume. The other problem is that — whenever I say problem, just think of it as opportunity — LSST is going to be measuring dozens and potentially hundreds of things about every object.

There was a realization in the 2000s, that instead of building a separate telescope to do this part of astronomy, a separate telescope for this part, what we’re going to do is we’re going to build a telescope, the telescope, to essentially download this sky. You still need to process those data into a form that will enable the solar system scientists to focus on solar system objects, and dark energy folks do their weak lensing maps. Data processing became a huge thing for LSST. It’s one of the rare projects in astronomy where the data system — for which I was responsible — is as expensive and as big as the telescope itself and as the camera itself.

When you’ve collected all the data there is to collect, the only thing that’s left is to analyze it better. We take measurements, and then how do you know what the measurement is telling you about whatever hypothesis you have? There are statistical methods that allow you to do tests, to fit the models. Statistics is, among other things, about extracting knowledge from data, quantifying your knowledge given the data you have. We use [statistics] very prescriptively, as in, here’s a statistical cookbook. You have to look at the ingredients and pick the right rule, the right recipe. If you have a data set that needs to fall in certain criteria, and if you apply that rule, good things will happen. We’re getting to a point where we’re measuring almost everything we can. The only way forward is to now do your data analysis correctly, because, we cannot do approximations anymore. People think statistics is boring, but once you understand what it is, it’s a fundamental element of science, of discovering knowledge in data.

This big-data evolution, as you call it, it’s not just in astronomy, correct?

Particle physicists have been dealing with it for a little bit longer, they’re maybe five to 10 years ahead of us. Oceanography is now entering into the same region. Ecology is entering the same region. The basic tools that you need to know just to do your science are changing.

With USC starting quarterback JT Daniels in concussion protocol and backup Matt Fink out with three broken ribs, third-stringer Jack Sears will prepare as the starter for this week’s game against Arizona State, coach Clay Helton announced Sunday evening.

“I’m a big fan of Jack. I always have been,” said Helton, adding he appreciated how both Fink and Sears remained engaged in preparing for games despite losing the competition to Daniels, a true freshman.

“If [Sears is] given the opportunities, I think he’ll do a great job.”

Helton did not estimate how long Daniels is expected to remain in the concussion protocol and implied he wouldn’t need much practice to be prepared to play Saturday. Daniels was 6-of-16 for 89 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions before being sidelined against Utah, against whom the Trojans (4-3, 3-2 Pac-12) managed just 205 yards of offense.

If Sears has to play, USC’s offense will be scaled back. Helton said Sears has not received a lot of reps and will receive a “significant” number early in the week to “catch him up.”

“We’re not going to try and reinvent the wheel,” Helton said. “We’re going to try and pick the plays that we think fit Arizona State’s defense; plays that we know.”

If Daniels is unavailable, redshirt sophomore walk-on Holden Thomas, who joined the program in 2016 after throwing for 3,107 yards as a senior at Brentwood (California) High the previous season, would be the next signal-caller up. The other quarterback on the roster is junior Brandon Perdue, a walk-on transfer from New Mexico Military Institute. In two years at the junior college level, Perdue attempted a total of 89 passes, and had just 19 as a senior at nearby Oaks Christian High in 2014.

Helton also allowed for the possibility that USC, should the situation require it, has options in place to “get through a game.”

In seven games, Daniels has completed 56.9 percent of his passes and thrown for 1,629 yards with eight touchdowns and seven interceptions. He was the Gatorade National Player of the Year in 2017 and graduated with a year of high school eligibility remaining in order to enroll earlier at USC.

Representatives from several Washington County groups will attend a November boot camp to prepare for the county becoming an ACT Work Ready Community.

ACT Work Ready involves a national WorkKeys career-readiness assessment people can take to help make employers aware of their skill set. It focuses on three areas: applied math, workplace documents and graphic literacy.

For each of the three skill areas, people could achieve the bronze, silver, gold or platinum level. The lowest level they reach in one area will become their overall score level, said Theresa Shank, HCC’s dean for continuing education and workforce development.

Participants receive a national readiness certificate they can share with potential employers to show they are work-ready. They also can provide potential employers with their certification number so the employer can see how the person scored in each skill area.

The community will eventually have a job profiler who works with local companies to match WorkKeys skill levels with job descriptions and openings to help match people with jobs, Shank said. Some require only a certain skill level, so platinum or gold isn’t necessary for every job.

The third aspect is curriculum that HCC’s adult literacy program could have available as soon as the spring semester to help people improve their skills to be career-ready.

There are more Work Ready Communities in the South, where manufacturers and other large companies have recognized the value of the certificate program.

The boot camp is the start of what is expected to be a yearlong process as community partners learn about the program and achieve specific tasks and benchmarks, Shank said. They need to learn more about how the program works, how to work together for a Work Ready Community and how to promote the program.

For instance, Washington County Public Schools must learn how to use the career-readiness assessment to prepare students for careers, Shank said.

Participating in the Nov. 7-8 boot camp in Little Rock, Ark., will be representatives from WCPS, the Washington County Department of Business Development, Western Maryland Consortium, Washington County Chamber of Commerce, Washington County Free Library, Maryland Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation, HCC and possibly some local businesses.

HCC has the assessment tool, which a couple local employers are already using for screening. Employers interested in using the assessment may call Shank at 240-500-2476.

ATHENS, Ga. — Georgia coach Kirby Smart used the bye week to round off some corners and evaluate some young talent, the Bulldogs prepping for the key stretch of the 2018 season.

A 36-16 loss at LSU exposed some of the weaknesses Smart had spoken about even as Georgia was off to a 6-0 start a No. 2 ranking.

“We’ve highlighted (weaknesses) to our team,” Smart said. “Sometimes it takes that loss to really make them understand.”

Majdoub Rhouziyal has been a busy man.

Standing behind the counter at Boston News Cafe Express, wearing a Red Sox hat and jacket, he dutifully rang up orders for Mega Millions tickets Thursday morning, one day before the drawing for the second-largest jackpot in US lottery history.

The sales for all the Mega Millions tickets in Massachusetts for Friday’s drawing totaled about $2.5 million as of noon Thursday. About $640,000 of those total sales are solely from tickets that were purchased Thursday morning, according to Christian Teja, spokesman for the Massachusetts State Lottery.

The sales figures are expected to rise significantly before the drawing Friday night, Teja said.

“The most sales are always on the day of the drawing,” he said.

Paul Daponte, 33, stopped by Boston News Cafe Express and plunked down $10 for five quick pick tickets. A baker by trade, he had just made a catering delivery when he stopped in to play the Mega Millions.

“You gotta play to win, right?” he said.

If he ends up winning the jackpot, Daponte said he’d buy a condo in Boston — maybe a place at Millennium Tower — then he’d take a vacation and start his own business in the restaurant industry.

“Most importantly I would give back to the community,” said Daponte, who grew up in Fall River. “Because I come from hardship, and I’d find ways to invest it back into some nonprofits.”

John Clancy, 53, of Weymouth walked in and bought six Mega Millions tickets for himself and his boss (a.k.a. his wife). Three for him, and three for her.

“If I win, she wins. If she wins, she wins,” he said, with a laugh.

Clancy said if he won, he’d want to share the wealth with charities that help veterans and other causes.

Clancy motioned to Rhouziyal, who was still behind the counter, selling lottery tickets to a line of customers. “I told him if I won down here, I’d buy him a store in the Caribbean,” Clancy said.

“Somebody’s gotta win, so you never know.”

Over at Sulgrave Newsstand on Milk Street, Jan Hingston, 72, of Charlestown waited in line to buy her ticket. When it was her turn, she asked for a quick pick. She didn’t have any special numbers to play.

What would she do if she won?

“I would help my family out, and my extended family, and I would give to charities, and help women’s causes . . . and then I’d go shopping,” she said.

Monica Thomas, 43, of Quincy stepped up to the counter to buy her chance to become a millionaire many times over. If she won the jackpot, she said she’d also want to share her winnings.

“I’d want to help my family,” she said, pausing to mull over the possibilities. “Buy a house. Help my church . . . pay a portion to my church.”

The sales record for a single drawing in Massachusetts is about $32.971 million, which was for the $1.586 billion Powerball jackpot drawing on Jan. 13, 2016 — the largest lottery jackpot ever in the United States.

The Powerball jackpot for Saturday’s drawing is an estimated $430 million. A ticket bought in Massachusetts for Wednesday’s Powerball drawing was one of three tickets sold nationwide that won a $1 million prize. One ticket sold in Florida won a $2 million prize, officials said.

The largest jackpot ever won on a single ticket in US lottery history is $758.7 million. A Massachusetts woman — Mavis Wanczyk of Chicopee — was the lone lucky winner of that Powerball jackpot in August 2017.

The jackpot for Saturday’s in-state Megabucks Doubler drawing is an estimated $3.5 million, officials said.

Tickets for the Mega Millions and the Powerball are $2 each, and tickets for the Megabucks Doubler are $1 each.

Tickets for Friday’s Mega Millions drawing can be purchased until 10:45 p.m. Friday at retailers throughout the state. The drawing will take place at 11 p.m. in Atlanta, lottery officials said.

The results for all the drawings can be found on masslottery.com, as well as on the Lottery’s Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube pages, officials said.
