Americans who should be prepping for retirement have a fast-growing student loan debt problem – MarketWatch

Student debt is often thought of as a young people’s problem, but it’s becoming increasingly clear that it’s also plaguing older Americans.

Between the second quarter of fiscal year 2017 and the first quarter of FY 2018, Americans aged 50 and older saw their federal student loan debt grow by about $18 billion, according to government data released this month. While that $18 billion is less than the growth in student loan balances among those ages 25 to 49-years-old, older borrowers’ outstanding student debt increased at a faster rate during that period.

“It’s a concern to see debt held by people in their 50s and 60s,” said Robert Kelchen, a professor at Seton Hall University who focuses on higher education finance. “That means that either you’re working longer to try to repay it or you’re hoping that it will be forgiven.”

Policymakers, advocates for older Americans and student loan borrowers, and the public at large have started to take notice of seniors’ challenges with student debt, thanks in part to reports from the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and the Government Accountability Office. The data released this month offers fresh evidence of this trend.

Now the AARP advocates for borrowers

The unique problems of student loan borrowers over 50 “needs to be part of a comprehensive discussion,” about various ways to mitigate the nation’s student debt problem, said Ryan Gruenenfelder, the director of advocacy and outreach for AARP Illinois. His organization, which works to advance the interests of those 50 and older in Illinois, threw its weight behind a law that requires student loan companies to be regulated by the state. The organization decided to support efforts to get that law passed because older Americans are increasingly a constituency affected by the actions of student loan companies.

“We don’t have a lot of policy positions on this issue,” Gruenenfelder said of student debt, “but we do have concern, just because of the impact on people over 50.”

Many of the factors behind the growth in older Americans’ student debt are the same as those fueling the increase in student debt more broadly: stagnant wages and rising college costs mean that loans are becoming increasingly necessary for financing higher education. The changing job market also means that attending some college is becoming increasingly necessary for workers to re-tool throughout their careers. But the experience of student debt is different among older Americans for a variety of reasons. He asked them to choose one of 5 activities that are known to correlate with positive change. viagra pfizer cialis The active ingredients are Sildenafil citrate and Dapoxetine gives males now the chance of using a much longer time than cheapest viagra tablets. They’re paying off their kids’, grandkids’ and their own loans simultaneously

For one, the source of their debt may come from a variety of different places, including loans they took on for their own education, loans taken on to help their children or grandchildren pay for college or loans they co-signed with their children. That can be particularly challenging because the options for paying back these loans vary, said Persis Yu, the director of the Student Loan Borrower Assistance Project at the National Consumer Law Center.

For example, federal loans that older borrowers take on for their own education can be forgiven, but that’s rarely the case for federal loans borrowers take on, on behalf of their kids or private loans that they co-sign.

“The whole system is complicated already, but this is probably the culmination of all of the most complicated pieces put together,” Yu said.

Social Security benefits are at risk

What’s more, older Americans are facing particular financial pressures exacerbating the debt. For one, unlike 20-somethings, they typically don’t have a long working life ahead of them where they can make money to pay off the loans. Once these borrowers enter retirement and are living on a fixed income it becomes harder to find the money to pay off the loans, particularly if they have other debt, like a mortgage, or face a medical or other emergency.

When older borrowers struggle to pay off their student loans, the consequences can be dire. The government can garnish Social Security benefits to pay back a defaulted federal student loan.

As policymakers and the public at large pay more attention to the challenges faced by older student loan borrowers, the discussion surrounding student debt more broadly is changing, said Yu.

“We are finally starting to see a shift in a conversation that’s not exclusively focused on the kids,” she said. “When I started doing this work around seven years ago, that was the big focus: ‘these kids are taking out all this unsustainable debt.’ And it’s not just about kids, it’s about whole generations of people struggling to finance education.”

Trapped Below $7K: Is Bitcoin Prepping for a Big Breakout? – Coindesk

Bitcoin (BTC) has spent a better part of the last 24 hours trading a tight range around $6,800.

In fact, the cryptocurrency has been restricted to an increasingly narrow price range for almost a week now, with neither the bulls nor the bears able to force a big move in either direction. As of writing, BTC is changing hands at $6,840 on Bitfinex.

However, while the sideways trading is somewhat dull for observers and traders alike, the market may be about to become more exciting.

According to technical theory, the wider the range and the longer the duration of the consolidation zone, the more violent the breakout tends to be.

1-hour chart

The above chart shows, the narrowing price range (represented by the triangle formation) is almost a week old.

The range high is $7,510 and the range low is $6,425. So, bitcoin could see at least a $1,000 dollar move on either side, depending on nature (bullish/bearish) of the breakout.

As of writing, the triangle support is seen around $6,570, while the resistance is lined up at $7,080.

A downside break could mean the potential for a sell-off to $5,500. On the way lower, BTC may find support around the November low of $6,000, as the daily relative strength index (RSI) will likely show oversold conditions by then.

Also note that BTC has created a bear flag (continuation pattern), inside the narrowing price range. A downside break of the flag would signal a continuation of the sell-off from the April 9 high of $7,189 and would open the doors to $6,150 (target as per the measured height method: pole height subtracted from breakdown price).

Lifestyle Issues similar obesity, excessive smoking, use http://cute-n-tiny.com/cute-animals/mouse-in-bread/ cialis 40 mg of recreational medicine, alcohol abuse etc., – These factors not only reduce stress and fatigue, but improve attention and focus. However, only a convincing break below $6,570 (triangle support, sloping upwards) would revive the bearish view. That said, the bearish flag breakdown could boost the odds of a drop below that level.

On the bull side, an upside break of the triangle may not necessarily bring a $1,000 rally as resistance is lined up at $7,189 – a strong resistance point established by the high volume sell-off. Thus, the bulls need a clear break above $7,189.

View

A potential bear flag breakdown could be considered as a warning the bitcoin is set to move below triangle support seen at $6,570. Acceptance below that level could prompt a drop to $6,000.

If the bulls take charge, a high volume move above $7,189 will likely set the tone for a break above $7,510 (range high) and a rally to $8,100.

LIVESTREAM: Cheyenne Mountain Zoo prepping for 200th giraffe calf – KRDO

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The Cheyenne Mountain Zoo is making preparations to welcome its 200th and 201st giraffe calf, and a camera has been set up to catch when it happens live.

Two of the zoo’s 17 giraffes, Muziki and Laikipia, are pregnant and are due at the end of April or early May. But they can give birth earlier than expected, so the live cam is online now.

The camera is set up in the zoo’s birthing stall and will be most active overnight between 4 p.m. and 9 a.m.

Watch below:

From the zoo:

At night, the camera will automatically shift into night-vision mode, and two dim red lights on the stall will help us view the giraffe moms at night. The red lights are enough for the giraffe to be visible with night vision, but not enough to disturb the natural daily cycles that they are used to. Although they are used to it being dark at night, they still only sleep about 20 to 60 minutes per night, just as they would in the wild. Giraffes can sleep standing up, so it is not usual for them to stay standing throughout the night, or to lay down for a portion of the night.

The first thing that viewers will see when the time comes is two front hooves emerging from mom. After that, they should see the head. The back hooves will usually be the last thing to emerge, and then the calf will drop to the ground, naturally severing the umbilical cord and stimulating baby’s first breath. After that, mom will encourage the calf to stand up within about an hour after birth, which can sometimes look like she’s nudging or kicking the baby.

M. Weiss: “It keeps getting heavier and heavier as things progress with it.”

Mazzotta: “It covers new heavy territory I don’t think we’ve never been in… [Frontman] Aaron [Weiss]’s taken a scream. And [there’s] instrumental territory that’s trippy, weird, stuff we never would have dreamed of doing…Trippy in a heavy sense, and a chill sense. Despite just working on spring landscaping, metro companies prepping for possible snow – fox4kc.com

KANSAS CITY, Kan. — Instead of pushing mowers, crews throughout the metro are preparing to possibly push snow.

On Friday, employees at True North Landscaping and Snow Removal temporarily put up their landscaping equipment and instead got out another thousand tons of salt for the weekend.

Roye Dillon said his job sometimes requires him to juggle all seasons in just a week.

“We were out mulching and trimming plants, putting down fertilizer and getting ready for spring,” Dillon said. “And then, now we are pulling crews back in to put salt spreaders and salt plows back out for this weekend.”

Dillon said the extreme cold and lack of moisture have created extra challenges. You might notice area flowers blooming later than usual this year.

“Roses, things like that because of how dry it was, a lot of evergreens are damaged and box woods especially because of how dry it was over the winter,” Dillon said.

The good news is that the late cold snap could help with bugs, including ticks and oak mites.

Loyola Maryland men’s basketball coach Tavaras Hardy has been … – Baltimore Sun

Tavaras Hardy was back home in Chicago and working for Morgan Stanley, his short-lived professional career in Finland over after a couple of years. Basketball, which had taken Hardy from nearby Joliet to Northwestern University, was still in his blood.

One day, Hardy received a telephone call from Big Ten commissioner Jim Delany, asking the former first-team all-conference player if he was interested in coaching the Illinois Defenders Amateur Athletic Union team since Delany didn’t want to coach his own son.

Hardy took the team to Las Vegas for one of the premier AAU events in the summer of 2003, winning seven straight games and knocking off well-known programs such as Albany (N.Y.) City Rocks and Houston Hoops en route to a national title.

“We had one kid actually ended up going [Division I] to Northwestern,” Hardy recalled Wednesday. “It was just a group of good guys that played hard and we were able to execute our philosophy and we won a lot of games.”

It is the same philosophy that Hardy, 38, will take into his first Division I head coaching job at Loyola Maryland. Hired last week, Hardy was the main attraction at a Reitz Arena introductory news conference Wednesday morning.

Having spent the past 12 years as an assistant coach at three schools— the first seven at his alma mater, followed by three at Georgetown and the last two at Georgia Tech — Hardy has been tasked with reviving a program that never had a winning record in five years under G.G. Smith.

Hardy understands that the job he takes over is much different than the one Smith inherited when he was promoted after Jimmy Patsos left for Siena. The local landscape has changed dramatically in the past couple of years, with the hiring last spring of former Maryland star Juan Dixon at Coppin State and UMBC’s historic NCAA tournament win last month.

“One-hundred percent looking forward to the competition,” Hardy said. “Those are all great institutions with great coaches that are rising in this business as well. But what I think about is Loyola is unique in how we do things. For better or worse, we’re going to take our product and put our best foot forward and showcase it.

“I just think we have a tremendous opportunity to put forth an environment where it’s going to be fun to play, people are really going to get behind us and really get a true student-athlete experience in the process. We just want to make sure locally and getting outside the region … wherever we need to get the best players who want to come here, we’re going to do so. Certainly Baltimore is a key for us.”

Hardy doesn’t think his inexperience as a Division I coach will hurt him. His most recent head coaching gig involved the oldest of his four children, 10-year-old Mariah’s fifth-grade team in Atlanta called the Athletics of Tomorrow “Lady Rebels.”

“I’m confident in my ability to coach. I’ve had a chance to work with great coaches at great institutions, I’ve coached in three great leagues,” he said. “I’ve coached against teams from all over the country in various situations.

“I feel pretty good, especially what we’re going to do offensively and defensively. My press conference demeanor will be different than my game demeanor. The guys will be fired up to go. and good things will happen.”

Though Hardy’s name was unfamiliar in Baltimore, athletic director Donna Woodruff said Wednesday that he quickly “went to the top of the list and stayed there.” Woodruff is confident Hardy can quickly turn around the Greyhounds and will have the support from the administration to accomplish that.

Woodruff doesn’t think the fact that the 2,100-seat Reitz Arena is tiny compared with Coppin’s 4,100-seat Physical Education Complex, Towson’s 5,200-seat SECU Arena or UMBC’s Event Center, which can hold 5,000, will be a deterrent in the team’s potential turnaround.

“I think it’s a real nice place to play within the Patriot League, and if you can get it full, which is what we intend to do,” she said. “But the most important thing is that you have the right person leading the program and the right players on the floor. As Coach Hardy said, ‘Looking at our talent, we’ve got an opportunity to make a dent quickly.’ ”

Hardy has an appreciation for the level of competition in the Patriot League that Smith acknowledged after his first season that he and his staff might have lacked have when Loyola switched over from the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. Bill Carmody, who coached Hardy at Northwestern, is at Holy Cross. Mike Brennan, with whom Hardy served as an assistant at Georgetown, is at American.

“I’ve always been a fan of the Patriot League, I think they’re a lot of great coaches in this league, so I’ve watched from afar,” Hardy said. “I’ve always been attracted to places that have a strong academic presence, play in a great league and are near a major city. So that’s what Loyola offer. I know the product here is ready-made. I know they’ve had success in the past. It’s time to sustain it.”

Tar Heels prepping for 2018 without spring game, set QB … – WRALSportsFan.com

— The Tar Heels are back on the turf for spring practice but won’t have a spring game like in seasons past.

“To be able to get more reps in a normal scrimmage, it would be better use of our time I felt,” head coach Larry Fedora said.

“I mean I’d love to see a spring game,” linebacker Cole Holcomb said. “But it is what it is.”

Familiar controversies are still lingering: not knowing if Chazz Surratt or Nathan Elliott will start at quarterback.

• UNC, Liberty agree to 3-game series beginning in 2024

Both Elliot and Surratt shared an even amount of reps Tuesday at practice. Elliott led a majority of the drills and stretches.

When asked if either quarterback is separating himself from the other, Fedora said, “No, not really. I wouldn’t tell you if they had.”

Despite familiar answers to QB questions, some changes are coming as recruits look on at Kenan Memorial Stadium.

About half of the new folding seats have been installed.

While it’s easy to move forward with new shiny perks — the Tar Heels still have a bad taste in their mouths about their 3-9 finish last year

Intel outside: Apple ‘prepping’ non-Chipzilla Macs by 2020 (stop us if you’re having deja vu) – The Register

Apple is once again reportedly working on switching out Intel processors for its own homegrown, presumably 64-bit Arm-compatible, CPUs in Macs.

The changeover could happen as early as 2020, according to Bloomberg today.

iPhones, iPads and other iThings use Arm and Apple-designed chipsets to run software, while the desktop kit uses Intel’s x64 silicon. There is apparently a project within Apple, codenamed Kalamata, to craft desktop-grade Arm-compatible processors, along with a macOS port, allowing the biz to craft a uniform architecture across all of its product lines.

Also, using its own chips – as seen in the iPhone and iPad – will be cheaper than Intel’s big-cost-big-performance lines, it is assumed.

You may be suffering from what feels like deja vu. We’ve reported on Apple toying with Arm-powered Macs in late 2017, early 2017, and as far back as 2012. It is understood porting the operating system to Arm is done and dusted: the next stage is creating a processor capable of hitting desktop and workstation levels of performance, and porting applications or emulating x86 well enough to run existing code on the host architecture.

Apple has experience with this, running PowerPC apps on x86 Intel Macs, for example, via its Rosetta toolkit.

Intel shouldn’t be too worried – Apple volumes are tiny, relatively speaking, at an estimated one per cent of Intel’s profits – however, Chipzilla’s share price is down 9 per cent right now on the rumors. The chipmaker declined to comment on speculation or its customers.

Speaking of chip world domination

Meanwhile, Samsung’s semiconductor revenues overtook Intel’s in 2017, thanks to storage silicon sales, according to a new report.

An IHS Markit study out late last month stated the semiconductor market was worth a massive $429.1bn last year, up 21.7 per cent on 2016’s $352.6bn.

The largest supplier was Samsung, with a 14.5 per cent share at $62bn, up 53.6 per cent on the year, mostly due to DRAM and NAND pricing.

The jump was enough to help Samsung overtake Intel, just, with Chipzilla raking in $61.4bn, under-growing the market with an 11.7 per cent rise on the year. The third-placed supplier was SK Hynix, with $26.6bn, up a huge 81.2 per cent on its 2016 total of $14.7bn. Thanks for the memories!

IHS Markit tabulated the top ten suppliers’ numbers. and we charted them:

Micron also enjoyed a strong rise, up a strong 79.7 per cent on its $12.7bn 2016 revenues to $22.8bn in 2017.

The other suppliers all under-grew the market, except Nvidia with its 42.3 per cent GPU-fueled rise to $8.7bn.

Toshiba was one of the under-growers, with its 19.8 per cent rise to $11.8bn in 2017.

The influence of DRAM and NAND revenues is indicated by the semiconductor market only growing 9.9 per cent, if those two categories are taken out of the equation.

IHS Markit points out that there was a 33.4 per cent 2016-to-2017 growth in the data center semiconductor market, in which processors have more prominence. In this sub-category, Chipzilla was top, with revenues almost double those of second-placed Samsung. ®
