On that upcoming mission, called Exploration Mission 1 (EM-1), the uncrewed Orion capsule will loop around the moon and come back to Earth, if all goes according to plan.

Building Orion
Engineers plan to bolt the Orion spacecraft‘s heat shield against the crew module early this year. The heat shield is designed to withstand temperatures as high as 5,000 degrees Fahrenheit (2,760 degrees Celsius) that Orion will encounter when it slams into Earth’s atmosphere on the way back from the moon.
The service module for Orion, which is being built by the European Space Agency, should arrive from Europe in mid-2018, NASA officials said in a Jan. 5 update. In 2018, the massive rocket will come together at the Michoud facility as five pieces are joined to create the 212-foot-tall core stage. For EM-2, the Exploration Upper Stage, which is more powerful than the SLS upper stage that will be used in EM-1, is being designed and will undergo a critical design review in late 2018. Engineers are also building core-stage and rocket parts for EM-2 and testing engines for future crewed missions.
Ground systems
This spring, workers at KSC will roll out the Mobile Launcher to Launch Pad 39B, which was previously used for Apollo, Skylab and space shuttle missions. There, the Mobile Launcher will be checked to ensure its physical connections fit with pad systems. Then, the launcher will be rolled into the Vehicle Assembly Building (which was also used during the Apollo, Skylab and space shuttle programs) for testing. Once testing inside the Vehicle Assembly Building is complete, the launcher will be moved back to the pad to undergo testing of its full systems for several months. Software updates will also be finished for EM-1 in the summer of 2018.
For EM-2, ground-systems engineers will construct special umbilical connections designed to service the Exploration Upper Stage engines while the SLS is at the launchpad. Construction will also begin on a huge holding tank for liquid hydrogen that will be used for the core stage of the SLS.

Sporting KC has unveiled the club’s full match schedule for the 2018 preseason, presented by Children’s Mercy. Manager Peter Vermes’ men will play seven friendlies in the state of Arizona prior to their regular season opener against New York City FC on March 4 at Children’s Mercy Park.
2. Feel the Draft
The first two rounds of the 2018 MLS SuperDraft will take place this Friday in Philadelphia. Sporting KC currently has two selections in the first round at No. 13 and No. 18 overall and zero picks in the second round. TheSuperDraft will be streamed live on MLSsoccer.com, the MLS YouTube channel and the MLS Facebook page, with live updates through MLS and Sporting KC social media channels.
3. Get in the Game
Major League Soccer announced on Friday the creation of eMLS, a new video-gaming league for competitive play within EA SPORTS™ FIFA 18. eMLS will pit the best FIFA 18 players from the U.S. and Canada, representing MLS clubs, against each other to determine who will represent the League in the EA SPORTS FIFA 18 Global Series Playoffs on the Road to the FIFA eWorld Cup 2018.
Each club will have its own process of selecting a player from its region to represent the team in eMLS competitive play. Sporting KC will announce in the near future the procedural details on how the club will select its player for the competition.

With the new year comes the third annual #MLSSoshies, which will award the “Most Social Player” in Major League Soccer based on social media merits from the 2017 season. The Swope Park Rangers will play their first home game of the 2018 USL campaign on March 24 versus Seattle Sounders FC 2, the league confirmed on Friday. The USL also announced that the Rangers will open the season on the road, facing Reno 1868 FC at Greater Nevada Field on March 17.
7. Hadji Like That?
The Swope Park Rangers announced today that the club has signed striker Hadji Barry, who spent the previous two seasons splitting time between MLS and the USL with Orlando City SC and Orlando City B. The 25-year-old was Orlando City B’s leading scorer in 2017, scoring 10 goals in just 18 USL appearances.
8. Indoor Kings
Six Sporting Kansas City Academy teams were crowned champions at the U.S. Youth Futsal Central Regional Championships this weekend at the Mid-America West Sports Complex in Shawnee, Kansas. The Sporting KC U-12s, U-13s, U-14s, U-15s, U-17s and U-19s claimed titles on Sunday to qualify for the U.S. Youth Futsal National Championships, which will take place from Feb. 16-19 at New Century Fieldhouse and Roeland Park Sports Dome in Johnson County.

Sporting KC Academy midfielder Osvaldo Cisneros has joined the United States U-15 Boys’ National Team for a domestic training camp that kicks off the 2018-19 player cycle for the age group. Yet for all of Fournette’s breathtaking feats of athleticism – including a 90-yard bolt to the end zone that served as the exclamation point on Jacksonville’s 30-9 victory three months ago, he’s just part of a group that led the NFL in rushing.
While Pittsburgh (13-3) will be focusing on Fournette’s No. 27 wherever he goes on Sunday when the Steelers host the Jaguars (11-6) in the divisional round of the playoffs, they’re well aware they can’t take the other players in the backfield lightly.
Sure, Fournette finished with 1,040 yards rushing and nine touchdowns, Chris Ivory, T.J. Yeldon, Corey Grant and Bortles combined for 1,205 yards and seven touchdowns. Even fullback Tommy Bohanon found the end zone twice.
“Minimizing their run is more than just focusing on Leonard,” Pittsburgh coach Mike Tomlin said Tuesday.
“Obviously, we have to do a good job there, but we have to do a good job for 60 minutes and in all areas. We want to minimize the ways that they run the ball and the ways that they possess the ball and control the game.”
The Jaguars finished with 231 yards rushing in the first meeting, the most allowed by the Steelers this season.
While Fournette’s late burst skewed the numbers a bit, it was a run made possible by the 36 attempts that came before it as Jacksonville simply wore down Pittsburgh until the Steelers yielded.
More of the same likely arrives this weekend. The Jaguars are hardly apologetic for their approach, one that emphasizes controlling the clock and the tempo.
It’s a formula that helped them reach the playoffs for the first time in a decade and one they used effectively – if not exactly glamorously – while outlasting Buffalo in the wild-card round last weekend.
“They stick to the run the whole game,” Pittsburgh rookie outside linebacker T.J. Watt said. “It’s not like we’re going to shut it down for a couple plays and they’re going to pass the rest of the game. We have to stop it through all four quarters.”
Bortles included. For all of his occasional issues throwing the ball, Bortles can make up for it with his legs.
He actually ran for more yards (88) than he passed for (87) against the Bills. He had four runs of 10 yards or more. He only had five passes that traveled at least that distance.
“People talk about his skillset or whatever,” Steelers safety Mike Mitchell said. “At the end of the day they won the game. It’s dangerous, we respect it. Our job is to be able to cover.”

An IBM spokesperson reacting to questions on the accuracy of the article had this to say: “As you know, we do not comment on speculation. Many consultants recommend things to IBM, many of which remain merely recommendations,” the spokesperson told TechCrunch. That’s a carefully worded response to be sure.
The spokesperson went onto to explain, “And like every business, IBM re-skills its workforce to meet emerging client requirements. GTS is substantially increasing its investment in professional development and technical training to focus on our strategic initiatives.” In other words, IBM has been moving to areas like cloud, security, artificial intelligence and analytics over the last several years and they need to move the GTS workforce to those areas too (which would suggest they are actually doing it).
Ray Wang, who is founder and principal analyst at Constellation Research says that this a change the company has to make. “IBM is in the middle of a larger re-skilling exercise. The goal is to redeploy and retrain their staff for new business models,” he said. “GTS was set up for legacy support models and outsourcing models This is why there may be some truth in the rumor, but we do know that Bain is there,” he added.
The good news is that the reports don’t mention massive layoffs, although some layoffs are probably likely with a division this large. Still, if the initial report is correct, the focus appears to be on shifting employees to other positions, not eliminating them. Of course, time will tell how all of this plays out.

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. – The Vikings know they have to be prepared for 11-time Pro Bowler Drew Brees when he comes to town with the Saints on Sunday.
Minnesota’s defense is readying itself for more than just New Orleans’ veteran players, however.
Rookie running back Alvin Kamara has made quite the splash for the Saints this season, in more phases than one. Kamara played all 16 games during the regular season and recorded 120 carries for 728 rushing yards and eight touchdowns. In the passing game, he made 81 catches for 826 yards and five touchdowns through the air.
The Saints have also used Kamara on special teams. The rookie returned 11 kicks for 347 yards, including a 106-yard return for a touchdown against Tampa Bay to close out the regular season.
Vikings Defensive Coordinator George Edwards and Special Teams Coordinator Mike Priefer both talked Thursday about the threat that Kamara poses for an opposing team.
“He’s excellent at running the ball out of the backfield. He’s excellent,” Edwards said of Kamara. “You see him in the passing game quite a bit, the screen game, so we will have our challenges making sure we keep him contained during the course of the day. They’ve found a lot of different roles for him. He plays a lot of different positions, so he’s somebody we’ll definitely have to make sure we’re on top of and [aware of] what they’re doing with him.”
Priefer said that Kamara didn’t have extensive experience as a returner at Tennessee but that the Vikings saw enough on film “to say this guy is going to be really good someday.”
“I think the more he does it, the more confident he gets, and that’s what makes him very dangerous,” Priefer added.
He also commented on second-year returner Tommylee Lewis, who has served as both a kick and punt returner for New Orleans this season.
“I thought he was a great punt returner last year, and then this year he’s gotten his opportunities and he’s done a good job on kickoff returns, as well,” Priefer said. “They’re both very, very big threats for us and obviously something we’ve focused on all week, and we’ve got to go out and do our job. We’ve got to punt the ball well, we’ve got to kick the ball well, and then we’ve got to cover.”

Shurmur on ‘staying in the moment,’ focusing on Saints
Vikings Head Coach Mike Zimmer said after the regular season that he would make certain days available at the end of the bye week for teams to interview Shurmur for head-coaching positions.
Shurmur acknowledged Tuesday that he did interview and “enjoyed the conversations” but emphasized that he was able to “put that on the back burner” as the Vikings get ready for this weekend’s Divisional round matchup against the Saints.
“I think we as coaches, our whole lives, have learned how to stay in the moment,” Shurmur said. We obviously spent a lot of work last week on the three teams that we might play, and then once we found out Sunday night [of Wild Card weekend] who we were going to play, we quickly got to the task of getting ready to play the Saints.”
Shurmur on adapting to players’ skill sets
Shurmur has worked with – and had success with – Vikings quarterback 
When asked by a reporter about the key to succeeding with quarterbacks of different styles, Shurmur said he’s been fortunate to work with two very talented athletes.
“Well they’re both very good football players, so that’s where it starts,” Shurmur said. “Offensive systems are broad, and we have a lot of plays. We all like plays that work, and so what we try to do is just focus on the plays that fit the skill set of the quarterback that’s playing.
“This game is about matchups, what we think to be our three best receivers have been targeted the three most times,” Shurmur added. “We just try to do what we can to get the ball in the hands of the good players, and have the quarterback be able to do it in a way that fits his skill set.”
Edwards on New Orleans offense
Saints Head Coach Sean Payton has gained a reputation as an aggressive play caller, and Edwards said the Vikings are aware that “down and distance sometimes doesn’t matter” in whether or not New Orleans will take a shot.
“They’re going to execute their play and whatever you’re giving them coverage-wise, they’re going to try to get the ball to who they feel like they need to get the ball to,” Edwards said. “And they have certain areas on the field they like to take shots, so we have to be alert and be aware of when those situations are.”
Edwards said that having a “first-ballot Hall of Fame quarterback” in Brees enables Payton to use an aggressive approach on offense.
“Our work will be cut out for us, keeping them contained and hopefully giving them some things that can cause them some problems,” Edwards said.
Priefer on placekicking in the playoffs
When asked if there’s a clear-cut difference in pressure that a kicker might feel in the postseason, Priefer said that it “depends on the kicker” and how he handles those types of situations.
For Vikings kicker
“To him, it’s going to be business as usual,” Priefer said. “Once he goes out on the field and gives the head nod to the holder, to him its business as usual: ‘I just got to go do my job and make my kick.’ I think pressure, it’s probably beforehand, but once you get out there it should be like he’s been practicing forever.”
Priefer said it’s also helpful if the kicker has made other high-pressure field goals throughout his career or within the respective season.
“He’s been in some pressure situations, even this year, and he’s come through for us,” Priefer said. “[At Washington he] made that big kick, that 50-some-yarder, made the game-winner at Chicago, made a big kick at Green Bay just to open up the game in those difficult conditions.”
Added Priefer: “He’s been there before in terms of the pressure situations, so hopefully that will carry into the playoffs.”
NTTA prepping roads for winter weather – WFAA
With winter weather conditions, comes preparations on Texas roadways.
North Texas Toll Authority crews were seen Thursday putting down a salt water mix on North Texas streets.
The salt acts as a deterrent for ice potentially sticking to the pavement. NTTA says it’s treating elevated surfaces, which are known to freeze first — especially the big interchanges in North Texas.
Crews began treating the roads at about 9 a.m. and will continue to monitor problem areas throughout our winter weather event.
