EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. – Xavier Rhodes knows he’ll have a tough task lined up across from him on Sunday.  

The Vikings (9-2) will make their second stop in a game of three consecutive home games at Atlanta to face the Falcons (7-4). Atlanta is led in receiving this season by Julio Jones, who already has 66 catches for 1,039 yards through the air.

Rhodes called Jones one of the best in the league and wasn’t surprised by his most recent performance, a 253-yard, two-touchdown outing against Tampa Bay.

“You expect that out of a guy like him. I mean, it’s the norm for him. It’s the norm for us to expect him to put up those types of numbers,” Rhodes said. “Last year … he put up 300 yards in one game (against Carolina). Yeah, normal.”

Heading into the matchup, Rhodes said it’s important to keep his head down and avoid being mentally rattled by the four-time Pro Bowler in his seventh NFL season.

“You don’t believe in the hype, don’t be afraid of the name,” Rhodes said. “I know he’s one of the best receivers in the league; I just have to go play with the mindset of having confidence against him.”

It won’t be the first time Rhodes and Jones have met in a game.

Rhodes first played against Jones when the Vikings defeated the Falcons in 2014. Rhodes allowed Jones two catches for 27 yards off of four targets, and he successfully broke up a 50-yard bomb by Matt Ryan that almost certainly would have led to a touchdown if Jones had made the catch. The following season, Rhodes shadowed Jones throughout much of the game at the Georgia Dome. Jones, who didn’t make his first catch until the second quarter, recorded just two catches for 18 yards against Rhodes and was limited to 56 total receiving yards on the day.

That 2015 game was one of the breakthrough performances that has helped establish Rhodes’ reputation in the league.

This past offseason, Vikings defensive backs coach Jerry Gray recalled asking Rhodes to cover Jones.

“A couple of years ago he went against Julio, who’s a really good football player, he got a chance to go against an elite receiver for the whole game,” Gray told Vikings.com’s Mike Wobshall. “He did a really good job.

“So we took that, and I said, ‘OK, Xavier, here’s the thing – can you go for 16 weeks and do that? You may get beat on some routes, but can you be consistent for 16 weeks?’ ” Gray added. “And that’s a consistent player, a Pro Bowl player. Because that’s what we’re looking for.”

Rhodes has demonstrated that consistency more and more over the past two seasons, earning his first career Pro Bowl nod following his 2016 performance.

Now in preparation for reuniting with Jones for the first time in just over two years, Rhodes said that he’s anticipating plenty of passes his direction from Ryan.

While 1-on-1 matchups used to intimidate Rhodes, he now looks forward to the test.

“[Not only] the coaches believe in me, but the players,” Rhodes said. “They come and encourage me, ‘You got this. You do good in practice, so you can do good in a game, too.’ That lets me know they believe and trust in me. I go in there with confidence, believing in myself, but my teammates and coaches have confidence, too.”

But that doesn’t mean Sunday will be easy, and Rhodes knows he’ll have his hands full.

“Julio is Julio,” Rhodes said. “Big, fast, physical, can get the ball once it’s in the air. I don’t think he has a weakness. He’s focused, doesn’t talk much on the field, so it’s hard to get in his head. It’s Julio.”

OCEANPORT — It was supposed to be the first of its kind in New Jersey: a lounge at Monmouth Park racetrack where people could legally bet on sports games — just like they do in Las Vegas. 

Four years after it was built, not a single bet has been placed. The lounge at the Oceanport track has been operating as a sports bar instead as the state’s effort to legalize sports betting at racetracks and casinos has been held up in a lengthy court battle. 

But that could soon change. The U.S. Supreme Court is scheduled to hear oral arguments in the case Dec. 4, and experts and officials say the scales finally appear to be tipping in New Jersey’s favor. 

“Anybody watching from the sidelines can see the writing on the wall,” said Daniel Wallach, a gaming and sports law attorney with Becker & Poliakoff in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. 

U.S. Supreme Court to hear N.J. sports betting case

A ruling is not expected for months after the arguments — likely in the spring, possibly as late as June.

But racetrack and casino operators are so confident that they’re already making preparations.

Monmouth Park CEO Dennis Drazin said the sports betting lounge — a $1 million partnership with British bookmaker William Hill — could be up and running with kiosks and tellers within weeks after the decision. 

Drazin said there are also plans to expand the lounge it into the grandstand and open a full-scale Las Vegas-style sportsbook. 

Eighty miles south, MGM announced last week that it will soon begin construction on a $7 million sportsbook at the Borgata casino in Atlantic City. And more casinos are likely to follow.

“The Atlantic City casinos can’t wait until April to get their plans in order,” Wallach said. “They have to prepare now. This controversy is rounding third base right now. It’s almost over.”

Of course, none of this is a sure bet. After New Jersey voters approved sports betting in a 2011 referendum, a group of college and professional sports leagues — the NCAA, NFL, NBA, MLB, and NHL — successfully sued to stop Gov. Chris Christie‘s administration from implementing it.

Their argument: Not only does sports betting hurt the integrity of their games, it also violates the 1992 Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act, which bans such wagering in all but four states. 

A number of courts have ruled against New Jersey. But the Supreme Court unexpectedly took up the case, even after the U.S. solicitor general in President Donald Trump‘s administration advised the court to pass on it.

State Sen. Raymond Lesniak, D-Union, who has spent years pushing for sports betting in New Jersey, said the nation’s highest court “sent a clear message” by ignoring the solicitor general. 

“I don’t believe they would have done that only to knock it down,” Lesniak said. 

But even if the court sides with the state, it’s unclear what its ruling will be. New Jersey is arguing the federal ban violates the Tenth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution by allowing some states to allow sports betting while banning others. 

Thus, experts say, the court could decide to overturn the federal ban completely. And that could spur a slew of other states to legalize sports betting. Eighteen states have filed briefs in support of New Jersey’s case.

Bill Pascrell III, a lobbyist who has also spent years on the fight, said it helps that Trump recently appointed Neil Gorsuch to the court because Gorsuch is an advocate for states’ rights.

But Wallach said it’s more likely the court will allow New Jersey to institute its latest plan: to repeal state laws banning sports betting to permit the wagering at racetracks and casinos.

That means there would be no state regulation. The tracks and casinos would create their own regulatory process instead.

Such a scenario, Wallach said, would likely “carve out an East Coast monopoly (on sports betting) for New Jersey until Congress changes the landscape.”

That, he said, is because other states might think twice should that ruling occur.

“You’re talking about a state repealing criminal prohibitions governing sports betting,” Wallach said. “Who else besides New Jersey would be willing to do that?”

And if the court sides with the sports leagues? U.S. Rep. Frank Pallone, D-11th Dist., said he’s already drafted a bill that would overturn the federal ban and allow states to set up sports betting and online gambling if they choose, as long as it’s regulated. 

For that to become law, Pallone would need Congress to approve it and Trump to sign it.

But Pallone said his colleagues are “coming on board more” than they used to on this issue.

Proponents’ main argument is that sports betting is already taking place in the U.S. illegally, often run by organized crime. 

Americans bet up to $60 billion annual on sports via offshore websites and bookmakers, according to Eilers & Krejcik Gaming. Others estimate the underground industry is worth more than $150 billion a year.

Drazin said that money could give a serious boost to New Jersey’s horse-racing industry, which has been struggling in recent years after losing state subsidies.

“Sports betting for us is survival here at Monmouth Park,” the track’s CEO said. 

Atlantic City has also struggled in recent years, thanks in part to a string of casinos closing. 

Whatever happens, the ruling will likely occur after Christie, a major proponent of sports betting, leaves the governor’s office Jan. 16. But Pascrell, the lobbyist, said incoming governor Phil Murphy is also on board. 

Murphy’s spokesman did not immediately return a message seeking comment.

“This has been a long, long road,” Pascrell said. “But I have never been more confident of the outcome. The stars are aligned.”

Receé Caldwell finally gets the do-over she wanted.

The Texas Tech junior guard wasn’t pleased with the effort her squad put forth in a 17-point, season-opening loss to Texas State — in her mind, the first impression to the home fans.

A couple of weeks later, on a Sunday no less, the Lady Raiders get a chance to atone for that defeat in a big way when they face off against No. 19 Texas A&M inside United Supermarkets Arena.

“That team that we saw (Nov. 12 against Texas State) just wasn’t us,” Caldwell said before the Arkansas-Pine Bluff. “It’s very unfortunate that we came out and showed our fans that that was our first impression. … Hopefully our fans come back so that we can show them what kind of team we are. And how hard that we will play for them because that wasn’t us the first time.”

After dropping the first game of the season, Texas Tech (3-1 overall) has strung together three straight wins heading into a big-time matchup against an SEC squad in the Aggies (3-1).

Much of the success can be attributed to the Lady Raiders taking care of the basketball. After combining for more than 41 turnovers in their first two contests, Texas Tech only lost the ball a combined 19 times in big wins over Arkansas-Pine Bluff and UMass Lowell.

Brittany Brewer (15 points per game, five rebounds per game), Brielle Blaire (12 ppg, 7.8 rpg) and Dayo Olabode (11.8 ppg, 8.5 rpg) have been key in those matchups as well. The trio has helped Texas Tech dominate on the glass, averaging 18 offensive rebounds per game — ranking 22nd in the country.

In three victories against the Rattlers, Golden Lions and River Hawks, Texas Tech is outscoring its opponents 249-179.

And while the competition may not be what they see Sunday afternoon against Texas A&M, head coach Candi Whitaker is pleased to see her team is continuing to “get better” every practice and game.

“Every 68 cents of that dollar that you spend in those local stores are going to stay within your local community. A lot of those businesses are owned maybe by your neighbors or somebody that you know,” Guild said.

Business owners say spending money locally is about more than getting a steal of a deal.

“We are here. We are going to be the ones supporting the restaurants. We will be the ones putting our children into schools. We are going to be the ones who are buying the homes and living here, so supporting us is really making an investment in the community around you,” Grady said.

There’s no avoiding the Christmas spirit for LSU football players.

Before they can even step foot in the operations building, Tigers must first walk under a massive, purple-and-gold wreath hanging above the door. Once inside, they’re greeted by the purple-and-gold Christmas tree twice as tall as Arden Key.

The bannisters up to the coaches’ offices are lined with purple-and-gold garland and several more trees lie in wait throughout the facility.

And Danny Etling is having none of it.

The LSU quarterback has chosen to make his stand against the program, officially declaring himself against any and all Christmas decorations before Thanksgiving.

Christmas may be his favorite holiday season, but not until Thanksgiving gets its month in the sun.

Thanksgiving is every bit as good in his eyes, and it should be celebrated as such.

“Thanksgiving is underrated,” Etling said in a passionate defense. “Everyone’s already moving on to Christmas. You see the Christmas movies, Christmas music. We’re putting the tree up. Everybody needs to slow their roll down, jumping the gun.

“Let Thanksgiving have its moment. It’s a good holiday. It has football, got great food. Got the same food as Christmas. It has football, food and better weather (than) Christmas. And there’s a parade.”

LSU coach Ed Orgeron and his staff specifically requested the Christmas decorations be put up around the facility prior to the final week of the season so recruits visiting for this weekend’s game against Texas A&M could see the Tigers looking their holiday best.

But much to Etling’s pleasure, LSU isn’t completely bypassing Turkey Day.

Orgeron said Monday LSU would have a team dinner on Wednesday — a meal of fried chicken at the request of defensive line coach Pete Jenkins after seeing the menu originally called for baked chicken — and then an early practice Thursday so players can spend the evening with their families.

“It’s a fine line there,” Orgeron said. “As a coach, you want to be receptive to all your employees, obviously. All the players and all their families, I want them to spend time with their families. But I don’t want that to be a distraction. So we’re going to go as planned Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday; nothing is going to change.”

While defensive end Rashard Lawrence said he’s a fan of the fried chicken dinner, what he’s really looking forward to is his grandmother’s macaroni and cheese back home in Monroe.

The cheesy dish is a popular one with the Tigers. Nose tackle Greg Gilmore said his favorite food is his aunt’s secret macaroni and cheese recipe.

Gilmore said he’ll be cooking a full turkey for his mother who arrives on Wednesday, opting to forgo the traditional fried turkey for fire-safety reasons.

But Lawrence and Gilmore are a few of the lucky players who either live close enough to make it back home in time or can have family members come to Baton Rouge.

Out-of-state players and others who won’t be able to spend the holiday with loved ones, Orgeron said, will be set up with local teammates so everyone has a place to go.

Tight end Foster Moreau, who is from New Orleans, said he doesn’t want the holiday to be a distraction from the final game, so he and Etling will eat with a teammate from the area.

“It just kind builds the team mentality that we have,” Moreau said. “One team, one heartbeat. No Tiger left behind. That’s just what you’ll see. I’m sure before coach Orgeron said anything like that, I’m sure there were plenty of guys that were going to hook up with other people’s families and eat there. That’s just the type of character and quality you have on this football team.”

Defensive end Christian LaCouture said he’ll have a few out-of-state teammates over to his house for Thanksgiving, effectively backtracking from a previous pledge he made to ban his fellow defensive linemen from ever eating at his place ever again.

Earlier this year, when the Tigers’ season-opening opponent BYU opened its season the week before LSU, LaCouture had the entire defensive line over for pizza and a watch party.

He thought four large pizzas would be enough. He was wrong.

By the end of the game, the teammates ate 10 full pizzas and only stopped when LaCouture began putting limits on how much certain individuals could eat.

Apparently, he didn’t learn his lesson, though, because he’s left an open invite for teammates without a place to eat.

“A guy that has eaten a lot at my house is Lewis Neal,” LaCouture said of his former teammate. “He basically ate my mom’s whole pan of macaroni and cheese before anyone got there. I’m not even kidding. It was a whole pan, and he left a little square in the corner for five people. Davon Godchaux ate all the mashed potatoes.

“I’m scared because I don’t know how many people are going to come. I hope it’s more DBs and wide receivers. If we bring over D-linemen, it’s a wrap.”
