Intel Now Prepping Ohio Semiconductor Fab – CRN

Components peripherals News

Joseph F. Kovar

‘We are focused now on the initial phase of the project, which includes two factories on approximately 750 acres of land. The precise acreage for the full project is being finalized, as some land will be allocated for city roads and infrastructure,’ an Intel spokesperson tells CRN.

 ARTICLE TITLE HERE

Intel has officially acquired the land it needs to build its Ohio-based semiconductor manufacturing facilities despite earlier reports that the company is delaying the plant while waiting for Congress to release funding to support a U.S.-based semiconductor industry.

Intel has spent $111 million on 750 acres of land near New Albany, a suburb of Columbus, Ohio, according to a report Wednesday in the Columbus Dispatch.

This follows a report in NBC that construction crews have already started preparing the land for its expansion.

[Related: INTEL DELAYS OHIO CHIP FACTORY AS FEDERAL FUNDING STALLS]

Intel in late June warned that its Ohio fabrication plant would be delayed because Congress has delayed the Creating Helpful Incentives to Product Semiconductors (CHIPS) Act for America, which was expected to be a part of the funding of the new plant. The CHIPS Act was passed early this year, but Congress has not yet appropriated the needed resources despite bipartisan support.

An Intel spokesperson confirmed via email that Intel has started development of the Ohio semiconductor manufacturing plant, although the company did not confirm the $111 million purchase price.

“We are focused now on the initial phase of the project, which includes two factories on approximately 750 acres of land. The precise acreage for the full project is being finalized, as some land will be allocated for city roads and infrastructure,” the spokesperson said.

When asked about how Intel is starting development despite earlier acknowledgement that it is waiting for CHIPS Act funding, the spokesperson said Intel previously emphasized that it was postponing a ceremony, and that the project itself was proceeding.

Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger recently unveiled plans to quickly build a world-class semiconductor manufacturing capability to reduce reliance on third-party fabs for manufacturing, including two huge investments in U.S.-based semiconductor manufacturing.

Intel in January unveiled plans to invest $20 billion-plus to construct two new leading-edge chip factories in Ohio, in addition to the $20 billion it plans to invest in two new fabs in Arizona and $3.5 billion it plans to invest in semiconductor packaging facilities in New Mexico.

Intel is looking to expand its manufacturing footprint across Germany, Ireland, Italy, Poland and Spain with an investment of $87.8 billion over the next decade for building manufacturing plants.

The Ohio-based semiconductor manufacturing plant is expected to create 3,000 Intel jobs and 7,000 construction jobs and was slated for completion in 2025, with total investment in the site reaching as much as $100 billion over the next decade, Intel said at the time.

Intel, in a presentation slide show on the importance of bringing semiconductor manufacturing to the U.S. and of U.S. government support for the move, said it costs about $10 billion to build a semiconductor fab and can take three or four years.

“The private sector cannot succeed alone. Federal investment is essential to level the playing field and support American jobs,” the company wrote.

Prepping for Medical Emergencies When No Help Is Coming – The Epoch Times

CAMDEN, Tenn.—Almost everyone, even those who are focused on preparedness, are “woefully” unprepared medically, said Jake Drumm, a former paramedic and founder of Drumm Emergency Solutions.

“Most people think they should just buy a big ol’ first aid kit and they’re done,” he said at a self-reliance festival in Tennessee on June 12.

Drumm says it’s more important to get training, learn how to use the equipment you have, and have basic knowledge on mid- to long-term care.

He teaches classes on how to manage first aid emergencies in austere environments, such as post-tornado or  hurricane, a vehicle accident, a shooting, or generally if EMS isn’t readily available.

“It’s doing medicine when you don’t have the stuff to do the medicine,” he said. “We have to think beyond the initial care.”

The leading cause of death for the 1 to 45 age group is accidents; half of those are blood-loss trauma, Drumm said. A person can bleed out in three minutes.

Drumm’s five top first aid kit recommendations reflect those statistics.

The first item is a combat-approved tourniquet and the knowledge of how to apply it, for how long, and how to release pressure without poisoning the body, as well as the permanent damage they can cause.

The second item that Drumm recommends is a quality pressure bandage, often called an Israeli bandage, to help stop bleeding.

“Learn how to apply pressure” to stop bleeding, he said.

The third item is some kind of wound-packing gauze, preferably a military-style dressing that includes a hemostatic agent to aid blood clotting.

The fourth item is a chest seal for any penetrating trauma to the chest such as a bullet wound, and the fifth is protective gear for the carer—gloves and eye protection (a pair of $5 racquetball goggles will suffice, Drumm said).

Beyond the Initial First Aid

When emergency services aren’t immediately, or at all, many other factors come into play when caring for an injured person.

Drumm uses the acronym HITMAN to run through the somewhat daunting, but obviously vital, prolonged field care essentials.

HITMAN is the list to use beyond the initial 15 minutes of emergency care.

“So it could be another 15 minutes, it could be 15 days, it could be 15 months,” Drumm said.

The “H” represents hydration, hypothermia, hygiene, and high anxiety.

Two measures of how well someone is hydrated are how frequently they urinate and the color of their urine (lighter is better).

“The No. 1 cause of death is exposure/hypothermia in austere care environments,” Drumm said. “All these people who got wounds and died, generally died from exposure.”

As for hygiene, if you, your patient, and your equipment aren’t kept clean, other illnesses or infections can cause additional problems.

Drumm said avoiding “high anxiety” is a critical component to first aid.

“You need to calm yourself to give good care,” he said.

The “I” stands for infection and increased temperature. Learn to deal with fevers. With limited exceptions, “as long as that fever’s controlled, as long as you’re drinking and eating, that fever is not going to kill you,” Drumm said.

The “T” represents tourniquets, trends, and tidy up.

“Let’s just say that you have to put a tourniquet on someone and it’s going to be six hours until some kind of definitive care,” Drumm asked.

“Do you think you should leave the tourniquet on for six hours? No.”

Drumm encourages people to learn the protocol for tourniquet conversion, as releasing a tourniquet that has been left on for too long can be fatal.

As for trends, it’s important to keep thorough notes of vital signs and treatments, including times.

“Because in extremis, you will remember nothing. You will have no idea what you did 20 minutes ago to your patient,” Drumm said.

Tidy up means constant cleaning.

“You will not be able to stay clean in an austere environment. And what that means is, is that you have to work double, triple overtime to keep yourself clean, keep your patient clean, and keep the area clean,” Drumm said.

Tornado in Kansas

The “M” of HITMAN stands for medications.

A large chunk of the American population takes prescribed medication on a daily basis, including antidepressants, anti-anxiety medications, or antipsychotic drugs.

“Who thinks it’s a good idea to stop taking that cold turkey in the middle of a very stressful event?” Drumm asked.

He suggests developing a plan to wean someone off their medication over a 30- to 90-day period.

“This is probably the most important thing for planning for austere medicine scenarios,” he said.

The “A” represents analgesia, alimentary, and associated problems.

Have a plan for pain control, Drumm suggests, but that can be challenging.

Alimentary refers to nutrition and digestion.

“Your patients don’t stop peeing and pooping and vomiting just because they’re sick or injured,” Drumm said.

“Far more people in Haiti died from cholera than from the big earthquake.”

Finally, the “N” represents nutrition, night-night (everyone has to sleep), and no-go.

Nutrition is the caloric intake a person needs to survive and thrive. A patient with burns to 40 percent of their body surface area requires 10,000 calories in a 24-hour period, Drumm said.

And “no-go” is the decision to stop care and let someone die.

“It’s a real consideration with medical planning. Understand that people die, people will get sick, and they will get injured with things that you will not fix,” Drumm said.

“Because sometimes, it is hopeless. You get a 50 or 60 percent burn, and you have no pain control, and you have no fluids, and you have no way to treat infection—that person’s going to die.

“You will not fix everything. We are humans. But you can do some stuff to get prepared now that will make any sort of crisis much easier to manage.”

Nationals’ Evan Lee: Prepping for rehab assignment – CBS Sports

Lee (elbow) will begin a rehab assignment at the Nationals‘ spring training site in West Palm Beach, Fla. this week, Jessica Camerato of MLB.com reports.

While he’s on the rehab assignment, the Nationals will likely have Lee build up as a potential starting option for the big club, so he’ll presumably need at least a couple weeks to get stretched out before he’s activated from the 15-day injured list. Prior to being placed on the IL on June 18 with a left flexor strain, Lee posted a 4.15 ERA and 1.85 WHIP in 8.2 innings across his four appearances (one start) with Washington.

Canadians prepping for holiday travel | News | pressrepublican.com – Plattsburgh Press Republican

PLATTSBURGH — As traffic on the border increases during the holiday weekend, the CBSA would like to remind those traveling what to expect at the border.

“The best advice I have for anyone traveling across the border is to check out the Tips for Canadians on goadirondack.com, it will tell you everything you need to know about crossing the border,” Kristy Kennedy, director of tourism for the North Country Chamber of Commerce, said.

“We are working closely with the Canadian border officials to look at the volume of traffic across the border. I think we are at around 70% of traffic seen in 2019. There has been a high demand these last two years to get back to the lake. It’s great to see people coming back down to experience the Adirondacks,”

BE READY AT THE BORDER

Delays during peak periods of travel may occur due to COVID requirements. While the agency is doing all they can to decrease wait times, there are steps travelers can take to make the process easier.

Make sure you understand the requirements and other rules around COVID-19, those rules may vary depending on who is traveling.

Completing the mandatory ArriveCAN submission within 72 hours of arriving at the border can help reduce the wait time. Travelers landing in Toronto or Vancouver can use ArriveCAN to complete the customs and immigration declaration in advance of their arrival in Canada.

BY AIR AND SEA

Upon arrival at select major airports, primary inspection kiosks are available to verify documents and confirm identity. Those traveling with children must have the appropriate documentation, if the adult is not the parent or guardian, a consent letter authorizing the travel is required.

If you are entering Canada by water, all travelers must report their arrival immediately, unless exempt. This includes Canadian citizens, permanent residents and those registered under the Indian Act.

BORDER CROSSING

Ensure you are eligible to enter Canada, arrive with the appropriate travel and immigration documentation ready to present to the border services officer. This includes the ArriveCAN receipt, passport or travel documents, proof of vaccination and identification for all occupants of the traveling vehicle.

Travelers must declare the following, all goods purchased and/or received while outside the country, foods, plants and animals, wood and wooden products, currency and monetary instruments of $10,000 or more.

WELCOMING THEM BACK

Cannabis and related products are strictly prohibited from crossing the border in either direction unless authorized by Health Canada.

Travelers must be aware of the contents of their vehicle, consult the CBSA’s website for information regarding firearms and restricted or prohibited goods.

“Pretty much everything that has been closed for the past two years due to COVID-19 is reopened, with respect to the restrictions or requirements, I couldn’t be happier to welcome our Canadian neighbors back into the North Country,” Kennedy said.

FRAZIER’S CORNER: Prepping for 2022-23 During a Short, Busy Summer – Northern Illinois University Athletics

General | June 30

Hello Huskies & Happy Summer!

Just like that, my ninth year leading the Huskie Athletics program has come to a close with the end of the 2021-22 seasons for our 17 sports programs and 450 student-athletes earlier this month.  What a year it was – academically, athletically and socially – as our teams and student-athletes continue to impress and amaze with what they accomplish across all three realms.

Academically, we sound like a broken record – but it’s a song we want to hear on repeat! This spring marked the 18th straight semester NIU student-athletes posted a term grade point average above 3.0 and the Huskies’ cumulative GPA came in at 3.345. We saw 74 student-athletes graduate this spring with every sport represented. In addition, three Huskies – Enrique Banuelos of men’s soccer, softball’s Katie Keller and wrestling’s Mason Kauffman – were named Academic All-Americans by CoSIDA, representing the best of the best in academics AND athletics.

2021 MAC Tournament ChampionsIn competition, the list of highlights starts with the MAC Championships won by Men’s Soccer and Football this fall. Behind the two highest Major League Soccer SuperDraft choices in NIU history in Anthony and Nick Markanich, soccer advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Football completed one of the top turnaround seasons in the Football Bowl Subdivision with seven one possession wins before comfortably defeating Kent State in Detroit to win NIU’s sixth MAC football title.

NIU Volleyball and Women’s Basketball each qualified for their respective MAC Tournaments as did Men’s Tennis, while Gymnastics (2nd), Women’s Golf (2nd), Wrestling (3rd), Men’s Golf (3rd), Indoor Track & Field (3rd) and Outdoor Track & Field (4th) all recorded top team finishes in their MAC Championships. Those Huskie teams combined to send 12 individuals to NCAA appearances with nine MAC Champions in the group, including the first MAC women’s golf champion in NIU history in sophomore Jasmine Ly.

Huskie coaches Ryan Swan (men’s soccer), Thomas Hammock (football) and women’s golf (Kim Kester) earned MAC Coach of the Year honors; meanwhile a pair of first year NIU head coaches in Rashon Burno of men’s basketball and Jamie Moreno of women’s cross country began the process of building their programs during the 2021-22 season. In March, we welcomed Michael O’Neill as the sixth head coach in NIU women’s soccer history.

The Huskies’ athletics success extended to our fundraising efforts with supporters stepping up to make 2021-22 a banner year. In November, Huskies Invest: A Week of Giving saw more than 500 gifts totaling more than $1 million, enabling NIU to make significant progress and even complete several facility projects. The Nelson Tennis Center at Chick Evans Field House opened in April, providing the Huskie tennis teams with an on-campus home in which to compete and practice. A pair of turf projects are set to get underway in July as the new surface for the Soccer/Track & Field will be installed prior to the 2022 season, followed immediately by the infield turf installation at Ralph McKinzie Field, the first phase of Walt & Janice Owens Park. Smaller projects, including addition of a weight room in the Convocation Center and new LED lighting in the arena and Victor E. Court, are also in stages of completion. All are significant steps that will directly impact the experience of NIU student-athletes in 2022-23 and moving forward.
Nelson Tennis Center at Chick Evans Field House 2022
With the 2021-22 sports seasons concluded, June’s Victor E. Bash provided an excellent backdrop to celebrate our success. We thoroughly enjoyed getting back on the road with our head coaches to see many of you in person at Summer Circuit stops in St. Charles and Rockford, and hope you had a chance to check out the Victor E. Bash videos on the NIU Athletics YouTube Channel, including a look back at the 2012 Orange Bowl season with some of the most well-known members of that team. Of course, the biggest impact was the record-breaking $251,725 donated in support of NIU student-athletes.  We are so thankful to everyone who contributed in any way to the success of this year’s Victor E. Bash.

Thanks to the success of the Bash, and the ongoing support of our university administration, we will be able to address one of the biggest issues facing student-athletes and young people across the country this fall. Based on feedback we received from NIU student-athletes, we will be expanding the available mental health support, including having a dedicated staff member in the Yordon Center three days a week. While we have had a counselor available to work with student-athletes for the past several years and still have access to campus mental health resources, we are committed to making this area a priority in the coming year and moving forward.

In terms of moving forward, recent partnerships with Paciolan, Opendorse and new flagship radio station 94-9 WDKB represent significant steps in that direction for NIU fans as well as student-athletes. Paciolan is the leading mobile ticketing, marketing and fundraising solution provider for college athletics and this partnership is designed to making the ticket buying experience easier, while connecting our marketing, ticketing and fundraising processes.

Similarly, the partnership with Opendorse, now possible due to changes in the Illinois law regarding Name, Image and Likeness which allow universities in the state to assist and support student-athletes, provides a platform that will connect Huskies to NIL opportunities while also offering education, content and ensuring compliance. We are excited to work with Opendorse to help NIU student-athletes expand their knowledge and build their personal brands.

In 94-9 WDKB, we have a new local radio home for football and basketball game broadcasts and coaches shows and a true partner that is already spreading the word of Huskie Athletics throughout the region. In addition to the broadcasts, WDKB will FB22-James Ester celebrate (GaTech)work with us on promotional campaigns and more to increase ticket sales and attendance at Huskie games.

Excitement is already in the air for the 2022 Huskie Football season! Seventeen different players have been named to one of the two preseason All-MAC teams released so far and NIU returns 54 letterwinners and 22 starters from the team that went 9-5 a year ago. Like many of you, I can’t wait to see what Rocky Lombardi, Cole Tucker, Jordan Gandy, James Ester and the rest of the pack can do to build on last year’s success, and to see which of the outstanding newcomers will make an impact.

It’s going to be a season of celebration at Huskie Stadium, beginning with the season opener on September 1 and continuing with the Vanderbilt game (Sept. 17) when we welcome back members of the 2012 team on the 10th anniversary of that historic run to the Orange Bowl. Then, be sure to circle the weekend of October 7-8 when we celebrate NIU’s 115th Homecoming along with Hall of Fame Weekend and a Title IX 50th Anniversary gathering!

The 2022 fall sports seasons will be here sooner than you think, and you will not want to miss a game, whether it’s football, volleyball, basketball or any of our home events! Season tickets are on sale now and are BY FAR the most economical way to watch the Huskies from the best seats.

I look forward to seeing many of you in the stands in 2022-23. Until then, have a great summer!

Go Huskies!

The end of Roe v. Wade has Colorado’s Western Slope prepping for more people seeking abortion access – Colorado Public Radio

On Friday, a crowd of more than 100 people gathered in downtown Grand Junction. Some held handmade signs, others wore face paint; there was more than one reference to wire hangers. They had come to protest the Supreme Court’s abortion ruling

Though Colorado allows abortion, the procedure is now illegal in many of the states surrounding it. And that is changing the landscape of abortion access inside the state.

Jeriel Clark was one of the event’s speakers. A mom to two teenage daughters, Clark worries that the new patchwork of laws across the country will restrict where her kids feel comfortable moving when they’re older. She attended the protest to hand out information about abortion care in Colorado.

“Today, we’re going to be sharing some information about where you can find the closest abortions near you,” she said. “But it is really going to take someone who has the means and technology available to access that information to be able to make it to those locations.”

Even before the Supreme Court decision, getting access to an abortion was difficult for many people, including for those who live on the Western Slope. Like many communities here, Grand Junction does not have an abortion clinic. The closest is 90 miles away in Glenwood Springs.

Stina Sieg/CPR News
A large crowd gathered outside the federal courthouse in Grand Junction on Friday, June 24, 2022 to protest the overturning of Roe vs. Wade by the U.S. Supreme Court made earlier in the day.

Clark worried that people coming from Utah won’t be able to find their way to the handful of clinics that perform abortions in western Colorado, including in Cortez and Durango.

Abortion became illegal in Utah with the reversal of Roe v. Wade on Friday, though a judge temporarily blocked the state’s “trigger ban” on Monday.

Myles Brennan prepping to be QB1 for LSU this fall – WBRZ

BATON ROUGE – From this time three years ago, Myles Brennan came to the Manning Passing Academy as Joe Burrow’s understudy not knowing that both he and Burrow would be involved in one of the most historic college football seasons of all time.

Fast forward three years to now, he’s still in a quarterback battle in Baton Rouge but he’s still better prepared and in a better state of mind to take over the reins as QB one for 2019.

“I and Joe were a counselor and I came into the little throwing sessions and stuff and just being able to come back and be a counselor. So I mean, it’s an honor, obviously,” Brennan said.

“Myles or anybody, you pick up one thing about how to study film or you know, a certain drill, like I was telling yesterday, that the drills you do out there on your own, you should create those drills based off the film from the season before,” Peyton Manning said.

“Last year, but you know, I took from 2020 and just tried to tweak you know, whether it’s like pocket presence or just knowing where to go to ball, our coverages, or blitzes or protections I mean, the whole nine yards footwork. So I just try and pick you know, some certain every day and just knock it out. And just a week later, I’ll go back to it and just keep going keep getting better. There’s always something you can get better. All ways,” Brennan said.

If we know anything about Myles Brennan is that any adversity that he faces any battle that he’s thrown in the middle of he’s going to come out on top whether he wins or he loses take his weight, for example,

“I was to 225 the other day. So that’s, that’s good. I like to be I like to 220 So just be a little bit more mobile and things like that, but it’s better than 170 the last time you asked for that, I mean, when you’re at LSU for seven years it happens,” Brennan said.

Washington Nationals news & notes: Davey Martinez on prepping for an opener; Luis García with RISP + more… – Federal Baseball

Facing An Opener To Start:

Davey Martinez tried to set his lineup up for Texas Rangers’ right-hander Matt Bush, and he tried to also account for the fact that Bush, who’d made 30 appearances, but only three starts so far in 2022, wouldn’t be around for long, with the home team going with an opener for the second game of the three-game series with Washington’s Nationals in Globe Life Field this weekend.

“It’s kind of tough, because you try to figure out who’s in their bullpen and what they might try to do,” Martinez explained, “but they have a bunch of lefties and a bunch of righties, so the fortunate thing for us is that we have a bunch of switch-hitters, and I try to make out the lineup based on how we feel we can handle their rotation for today. So, that’s how I decided to bump César [Hernández] back to seventh just because I wanted to get Lane [Thomas] up there against Matt Bush, because Lane does hit fastballs well.

MLB: Washington Nationals at Texas Rangers Jerome Miron-USA TODAY Sports

“So, maybe he can get a jumpstart for us, then you have all those switch hitters in a row, so we’ll see what happens. It’s always difficult to plan a day when you don’t know that a guy is going to pitch 5-6 innings.”

Of course, Bush didn’t end up opening up the second of three in Globe Life Field.

Lefty Brett Martin did, then 2015 Nats’ 5th Round pick Taylor Hearn tossed four scoreless out of the pen, giving up just two one-out walks in the top of the second.

As a poet once wrote, “The best laid schemes o’ mice an’ men gang aft agley, an’ lea’e us nought but grief an’ pain.”

Does He Get Mad?:

Towards the end of Davey Martinez’s pregame press conference on Saturday, a reporter asked the fifth-year skipper what they said was an admittedly silly question:

Does right-hander Paolo Espino, who’s seemingly imperturbable, ever, you know, get angry?

We’re paraphrasing the question, but Davey liked it.

“Good question,” Martinez said. “Not necessarily, but he does get frustrated. Yesterday, he was frustrated after he threw that pitch and [Rangers’ outfielder Adolis] García hit a home run, because he said, ‘I wasn’t convicted to throw that pitch and I threw it anyway, which is dumb.’ So I said, ‘Hey, just learn. Learn and don’t do it again, right?’”

MLB: Washington Nationals at Texas Rangers Kevin Jairaj-USA TODAY Sports

“But he was upset with himself, and I said, ‘Hey, man, for what it’s worth, you did awesome, so put that one by you, and learn by your mistakes and move on.”

Espino, in his own post game press conference after he gave up just the one run on the HR, six hits, and one walk in an 89-pitch, 5 1/3-inning outing in the series opener in Texas, said it didn’t really matter to him that he lowed his ERA to 2.21 on the year in the outing, since it is way too early in the season to be thinking about stats.

“That’s nice, but right now I’m not looking at ERA. It’s too early,” Espino said, as quoted by MASN’s Mark Zuckerman.

Luis García joined the Nationals after he was called up from Triple-A on June 1st, and going into Saturday’s game, he had a .326/.337/.465 line, six doubles, two home runs, one walk, a hit by pitch, and nine runs scored, but perhaps even more impressive were his numbers with runners in scoring position since he came up.

García started the second of three with the Rangers 8 for 23 (.348/.333/.478) with runners in scoring position in 2022, and 6 for 12 with RISP and two outs (.500/.500/.667), with two of his six doubles two-out hits.

“He’s worked really hard,” manager Davey Martinez said of García’s success in those spots in his first month up this season, after he played at Triple-A in April and May.

“We talked to him last year about what we felt like he needed to do,” Martinez continued, and for now, they want him hunting pitches he knows he’s having success on.

“He’s not going to be a guy that’s going to get tons of walks right now. He may in the future. He’s very aggressive. It was understanding the strike zone more for him, and knowing what balls he can hit, what balls he hits hard, locations, and once he did that, then we started seeing that he’s been hitting [a fair] amount of balls in the zone very well, and I know he notices that, so his whole approach is to get the ball in, get the ball up, doesn’t have to be in, doesn’t have to be away, it just has to be up in the zone and he’s putting a good swing on each of those pitches.”
