Hoffman said he’s excited to show people the creative displays they’re putting together in the new store. It’s chaos, but it’s also a good time.
“I want to enjoy the process,” he said. “I want to be able to enjoy this, looking at the products and seeing, OK, is this telling a story? I wanted to be here and enjoy it. This is my favorite part — ordering the product and setting it.”
The biggest shift demarcating “step two” is the addition of The Kitchen at Copper Pony, a spot for coffee, soups, sandwiches, salads and “heavy on the baked goods,” Johnson said.
“Most people refer to the kitchen as the heart of the home,” Johnson said. “You need the heart to really kind of live into that. And so that’s really why we wanted to do that.”
This is new territory for Copper Pony.
“We’re hoping that people can offer us some grace as we launch into basically adding a business to our business,” Johnson said.

“We just had to kind of grow every category to fill it,” Johnson said.
They also grew their team, which now also includes food service staff for The Kitchen at Copper Pony. Between their Sauk Rapids location and Copper Pony in the Gardens, the team is close to 30 people.
But Johnson and Hoffman both said they are still focusing on maintaining the essence of what their customers have come to love about Copper Pony.
“We didn’t want to lose who we were,” Hoffman said.
Customers can still expect creative and artful window displays, for instance, facing out at the intersection of North Benton Drive and Second Street North.
“We’re hoping to really double down on that,” Johnson said.

With the announcement Wednesday that federal health officials are recommending COVID booster shots, the New Jersey Department of Health said it is preparing a plan for the distribution of booster doses to the general public pending approval from the Food and Drug Administration, but it did not release specific details.
“We await approval by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as well as the recommendations of the CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP),” spokeswoman Nancy Kearney told NJ Advance Media. “Details will be forthcoming.”
The initial vaccine rollout in New Jersey occurred in waves, starting with healthcare workers, the elderly and people with underlying health conditions. However, with the booster shot, anyone who is fully vaccinated with a Pfizer or Moderna shot will be eligible eight months after the second dose, federal health officials said if the FDA approves. They did not address booster shots for the Johnson & Johnson vaccine.
But the process should be smoother this time around, health officials and vaccine providers said of the anticipated Sept. 20 launch. “The planning started months ago,” State Health Commissioner Judy Persichilli said in July.
The state Health Department did not provide specifics on how it plans to administer booster shots at nursing homes, which lost nearly than 8,500 residents and staff members to COVID since the start of the pandemic, according to Department of Health data.
The state also did not detail whether it will reopen any or all of its six megasites, which administered more than 2 million doses, the state said. Some of the hospital systems that ran the sites didn’t immediately respond to requests for comment. But Persichilli said last month that the state can “easily put up larger sites” if needed. “We are ready to do that,” she said at the time.
Hackensack Meridian Health, which ran the Meadowlands megasite, said it has already given more than 200 booster shots this week to immunocompromised people.
“In light of today’s announcement from the Biden Administration about booster shots for Pfizer and Moderna recipients, we are currently discussing plans internally and stand ready to partner with the Governor’s office and Department of Health,” it said.
RWJBarnabas Health, which ran the Edison megasite, referred questions to the Department of Health.
It is unclear whether you will be able get your booster shot wherever you can get an appointment, but at least one pharmacy chain said it is ready.

In July, Persichilli said the state is “working aggressively” to try to see if there is a way to give the vaccine through doctor’s offices, urgent care clinics and other providers.
“Some larger physician groups were able to complete requirements including vaccine storage needs (cold chain),” the Health Department’s Kearney said earlier this year.
More than 5.43 million people who live, work or study in New Jersey have been fully vaccinated, according to state data. Approximately 4 million residents remain unvaccinated.

Tesla is adding a lot of job listings for design managers of new Supercharger sites as the automaker preps for a massive expansion of the Supercharger network ahead of opening it to other electric cars.
The Supercharger network has been growing at an impressive pace lately.
Last quarter, Tesla had 26,900 Superchargers at 2,966 stations around the world, which represent 49% and 46% year-over-year growth.
It is growing fast, but Tesla might need to grow the fast-charging network even faster if it wants to welcome more electric vehicles to it by opening it to other automakers later this year.
The automaker recently confirmed plans to open the Supercharger network to electric vehicles from other automakers by the end of the year.
Not only that, instead of making deals with specific companies, Tesla confirmed that it plans to simply enable EV owners to download the Tesla app to give them access to the charging stations.
In some markets, like in North America where Tesla is using its proprietary plug, EV owners will also have to use an adapter, which Tesla plans to offer at the stations.
This could result in a significant increase in traffic at Supercharger stations, which are often already super busy in some markets where Tesla vehicles are really popular.
Tesla has been expected to increase its effort to deploy charging stations in order to prepare for this expected increase in usage.
Tesla is enabling new routes, but there also appears to be a focus on adding capacity in urban areas.

MARIETTA — As school is back in session within the week, Washington County superintendents are hoping for a safe and educational school year.
Marietta City Schools’ students will return Wednesday and Monday was the first day back for teachers. Marietta High School students will return on staggered days along with kindergarten students at Phillips and Washington Elementary Schools.
Superintendent Will Hampton said masks will not be required at this time but that may change depending on the COVID-19 situation in the community.
Staff members will still follow strict cleaning and sanitizing protocols.
“(We are) still going to be cleaning classrooms and still have all the hand sanitizer stations available. We’ll be keeping up with it to the best of our ability,” Hampton said. “We did a lot of this last year so we’ve gotten better and found out some things that we don’t need to continue to do so that will free up our time.”
With the past few years undergoing changes due to new policies, Hampton said each building holds the opportunity for growth and improvement.
“Each building has an opportunity to create a new culture and a new environment. I’m excited that we have all this newness, you can let go of history and recreate a future,” he said. “It’s a really exciting time for people. We’ve got new staff and we have people in new places. All of this transition is very exciting.”
Masks will likely be optional for Belpre students, according to superintendent Jeff Greenley. Belpre will also bring students back to the classroom in a staggered format beginning Aug. 23, with seventh and ninth graders along with group A at the elementary school. Tuesday Aug. 24, will be eighth and 10th graders and group B elementary school students will return with the remaining students starting Aug. 25.
“We are thrilled to have students back with us in just about a week. Many of our (students) who were virtual have come back in person this year,” Greenley said. “We’re excited to have more students under our roof.”
Aug. 26 is the first day for Fort Frye students with kindergarteners starting on a staggered schedule. Masks will not be required at Fort Frye Schools, superintendent Stephanie Starcher said.
By continuing to educate students, faculty and parents about vaccines and maintaining healthy lifestyles, Starcher said she hopes everyone will remain healthy.
“We are encouraging health screenings at home and encouraging kids to build their immune systems with healthy eating and adequate sleep,” Starcher said. “A new school year is always a time for a new beginning for students and staff, we want it to be a safe school year for staff and students and we’re hoping that they’ll get to experience activities related to school as normal as possible with safety in mind.”
Warren Local students will also start with a staggered schedule for their first day and elementary school children will have the opportunity to attend an orientation to meet their teachers and check out their classrooms.
“Half the class comes at a scheduled time on Thursday and Friday (for an) onsite orientation for an hour or so. Each class comes in half groups (with) parents or caregivers and they get tours of the classroom, see the facilities. It’s kind of like an open house but more engaged,” Warren Local superintendent Kyle Newton said.
All Warren Local students will be in the classroom by Aug. 26.
The Frontier district will bring students back Aug. 24 with the following guidelines, as outlined on the website:
* Faculty and staff will continue to encourage safety protocols of hand washing, staying home when you don’t feel well and giving individuals the option of wearing a mask.
* The district will continue to work closely with the Washington County Health Department.
* Administration will be open and honest with students, families, staff and community members of any COVID risks that develop within the schools.
* Staff is committed to provide a safe learning environment where the academic and social emotional needs of students are met.
The first day for Wolfe Creek is also Aug. 24. For the first five days of instruction, students will be released at 1 p.m. to allow for time for teacher collaboration and additional cleaning. With guidelines as outlined by the website, the Wolfe Creek district is working to ensure a safe year.
At the Washington County Career Center, juniors will be coming back Aug. 25 and seniors will return Aug. 26.
“Today, we’re looking at 530 students enrollment is really strong, we’re excited about that. Everything looks really good, we’re hoping that students are going to be with us every day,” superintendent Dennis Blatt said. “Last year, just a handful of student got COVID. We want to do the best we can, especially (because) at the Career Center, we’re very much hands on.”

Mihtarlam, Sharan and Gardez, the capitals of the eastern provinces of Laghman, Paktika , Paktia respectively, Asadabad, the capital of Kunar in the northeast, and Maimana in the north fell to the Taliban after just several days under pressure. Sharan, Gardez, and Asadabad were fully government controlled before the Taliban waltzed into the city and seized them with minimal fighting. The Taliban preceded the assaults on Sharan, Gardez, and Asadabad by taking control of key districts in the provinces over the past several days.
The Afghan military is in complete disarray, and has been defeated in detail across the country. The Afghan National Army has lost five of its seven corps headquarters – the 203rd in Gardez, the 205th in Herat, the 209th in Mazar-i-Sharif, 207th in Kandahar, the 2015th in Helmand, and the 217th in Kunduz. Only one army corps, the 201st in Kabul, remains. The Army National Army’s 111th Division is also headquartered in Kabul.

That gave us 11 days to plan. If you remember, that was enacted, I think, on Dec. 20. And you had 11 days to scurry around and plan because it was effective Jan. 1. So we don’t even know where these proposals are going. First thing, if I was a betting man–not that I would go to Las Vegas–but if I was a betting man, one of the proposals said some of these changes may be retroactive back to April. I don’t think that’s going to happen. I would bet heavily against that because we’re too far into the year. And it just has a sour taste to change the rules where people already made decisions to go retroactive. I don’t think we’ll see that. So anything we’re talking about now, I think if it does happen, it’s going to be effective Jan. 1. So it’s a good time to have this discussion, be aware of the issues, because you do have time to plan if you want to make plans.
So some of the things they’re talking about: Basically income tax, capital gains, and estate and gift tax are the big issues, where all the big money is. So the income tax, maybe they want to raise the rates on people that make $400,000 or more, but there’s all kinds of permutations to that. We don’t really know where that’s going to go. And it may even affect people that are under $400,000, but they’re over $400,000 for one year–somebody sells their house… There was just a story in, I think, The Wall Street Journal, recently called “the one-year millionaire.” So one year, all of a sudden, it hits you. So that brings us to the capital gains rates, which is a preferred rate. You could pay 20%, 23.8%. They are thinking making that equal to ordinary rates, which can run over 40% if you add in that extra 3.8% tax on net investment income for higher earners. So if they made them the same, the only time that ever happened before was in the ’80s. And I think it only lasted a couple of years. So that would take a lot of the planning off the table because where everybody tries to get capital gains, now it might be treated like ordinary income. I don’t know if we’ll see that.
Then probably the biggest change–and the one that will hurt a lot of people that weren’t planning on it–is the elimination of something called step up in basis for capital gains, for long-term capital gains. Just to give you a quick example: If you bought your home for, say, $100,000 many years ago, and now it’s worth $2 million, that gain would be relieved at death. Or a stock, you bought a stock for $100,000, now it’s worth $5 million. Your beneficiaries pick it up at $5 million. All the income tax on that appreciation is eliminated at death. So not only do they want to eliminate that big benefit for the appreciation, but they want to tax it at death or some other transfer as if you sold it. I think that’s a nightmare waiting to happen. Even though you didn’t sell it, so where you’re going to get the money to pay the tax just because it appreciated then at death. I think this is a loser provision. It would be a mess. Plus, they would have to couple it and fix the estate tax because then you’d have it included for income and estate tax. And by the way, that may sound awful, but what I just described is an IRA. An IRA is always subject to income tax and estate tax, which is why I love Roth IRAs, at least it eliminates the income tax, still included in the estate. So I think that may be a bridge too far. But if you’re worried about that, maybe you want to sell some of your winners now for the stocks. Lock-in today’s low capital gain rates. And here’s a nice play: Use some of the proceeds from that to pay the tax on a Roth conversion. If you’re worried about higher taxes in the future on your IRA, move more of that to the Roth. So use those proceeds to pay the tax on a Roth conversion. You may want to look at that.
Also on the estate tax side, estate and gift tax: We have a huge exemption now, over $11 million, $11.7 million. There is talk of lowering that. So you may want to take advantage of using some of that exemption now during lifetime, which it can still be used for the rest of 2021 through lifetime gifting. We don’t know where that’s going to go next year. So you may want to lock-in some of the things you know: the low tax rates, the low capital gain rates, and the large estate exemptions. Now, if you want to wait till the end of the year, because we don’t know what’s going to happen, a lot of this can wait till year-end. But bigger assets, like the sale of a business, you have to get the wheels going now. For example, if you want to sell a stock, the law comes in Dec. 20, let’s say, all right, you push the button on selling. But you can’t do that on selling a piece of land or a business. You may want to get the process going if you’re truly worried about that, to the point where you can push the button right at year-end or not, if it seems like it may not be an issue. But these are things everybody has to think about because this is what’s been proposed in a number of different bills in Congress, none of which may come to anything, but you never know.
Benz: Well, that was my question, Ed. I think investors, people wrestle with how pre-emptive to be in terms of making changes to their portfolios, selling things, gifting things if none of this is a done deal.
Slott: It’s not a done deal. But I don’t believe personally–my own opinion, again, not a betting man–my own opinion that anything drastic, like some of the things that I think are a little extreme, are not going to get passed because you have a 50-50 Senate. You would need every Democratic senator to buy in. If one of them is sick, for example, it’s not going to pass. So it has to be something more moderate, more in the middle that everybody can get behind. I don’t think you’re going to see anything extreme, like some of the things I talked about, actually get through. But I think, if I had to bet again, they’re going to do something because from the Democrats’ point of view–and this is apolitical, I’m just saying–if they don’t do it now, nothing’s going to happen in 2022. It’s an election year, and nothing’s going to happen. So if they want to make the case that they did something, something’s got to happen now. And to get that something to happen, they may have to give a little to get the 50 votes and go less extreme.
Benz: People who are watching might be thinking, “Well, you know, he’s talking about estate tax, gifting assets. All of this stuff is mainly relevant, they might be thinking, to people with a lot of money.” You mentioned the very high estate tax exclusion currently. Is there relevance for people who don’t have quite as much in assets in terms of some of these pre-emptive strategies?
Slott: Yeah, it always falls on unintended people, like people who have a home, like I said before, that appreciated. Lots of people are in their homes for 30, 40 years. They have, look at the real estate market, incredible appreciation. These are these “one-year millionaires.” If they ever sell their home, and they did it next year instead of this year, they could be losing half of what they would have had, maybe, if these proposals go through, than what they would have kept after taxes this year. So it’s a big difference. So even people, say, of modest means that have a lot of money tied up in a home or a small business, they don’t consider themselves wealthy, but at some point, if they want to sell out, they could be one of these one-year millionaires that gets trapped by these taxes, supposedly on the wealthy. And that’s the problem with it. A lot of this falls on unintended taxpayers. Benz: Ed, really helpful information. Thank you so much for being here.

I am nothing without him. Sometimes people tend to shy away from that, but he is my partner in everything that I do for this business. I believe it’s because of that partnership that we were able to survive during COVID. We never had to take any business loans. The work was straight blood, sweat and tears. We ran on straight savings. The only thing I had to fall back on during that time was God, and he came through for me, and for this business,” said White. “We are run by family, for family. The University of Mississippi Medical Center is clearing out space in the bottom floor of a parking garage to prepare for the construction of a field hospital to handle the burden of an overwhelming influx of new COVID-19 patients. With no staff available to work the excess space, the hospital is requesting federal support in the form of medical professionals to bolster an exhausted and overworked care team.
UMMC has broken its own record for volume of hospitalized COVID-19 patients three days in a row. State Health Officer Thomas Dobbs stated earlier this week that the surge would only continue. Today, the Mississippi State Department of Health announced 3,163 new cases of COVID-19. Yesterday, that number was 3,488, the highest single-day report of the entire pandemic.
Dr. Alan Jones, director of UMMC’s emergency department, had a stark warning for the state. “If we continue on this trajectory, within the next five to seven or ten days we will see the failure of the hospital system in Mississippi,” he said.
What does that failure look like? UMMC chief Dr. LouAnn Woodward said the nightmare scenario was “total diversion” for the entire hospital, bringing up Grady Hospital in downtown Atlanta, which has now been forced to divert all transfers, the final stage of total resource saturation.

UMMC leadership is rushing to have the field hospital established by Friday, and anticipates that the federal government will provide assistance in the form of nurses, paramedics and other emergency responders.
Every report carries the guarantee that a portion of the newly infected will be hospitalized before long. The state health officer has taken to translating new case reports into expected proportions of the critically sick and the dead. UMMC’s over-capacity situation is only expected to worsen in light of that fact.

The state is now exceeding the worst days of the winter surge, in spite of over a third of the population being fully vaccinated. All public-health officials that the Mississippi Free Press has spoken with agree that the incredibly contagious delta surge is to blame.

UMMC Executive Director of Communications Marc Rolph confirmed that UMMC was making room for the field hospital in a morning interview with the Mississippi Free Press, in addition to a request for federal assistance with staffing. The Mississippi State Department of Health is the primary initiator in the request for federal assistance: the request is being made in conjunction with the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency, the Office of Gov. Tate Reeves, and UMMC.
“These big (new case) numbers will correlate with people, in the future, who need clinical intervention,” Rolph said.
The public medical center briefly operated a field hospital in the earliest days of the pandemic, when fear and confusion over the virus and a lack of testing options made an external site an ideal spot for providing COVID-19 tests and triage. But the state is now blanketed in testing options with active hospitalizations UMMC’s greatest concern.
UMMC will hold a press conference at 1:30 this afternoon to describe the worsening situation. One hour later at 2:30 p.m., MSDH will hold its own weekly press briefing. Mississippi’s state of emergency is still set to expire on Sunday, Aug. 15. Gov. Reeves has yet to confirm whether he will extend the order, having announced prior to the delta surge that he would let it lapse. Rolph could not say for sure if or how a lapsed emergency order would affect the request for federal support.
