The coronavirus has thrown each individual’s education into chaos. And Oklahoma teachers, students and administrators are trying to bring order back into students’ lives.

But billions of dollars from the federal government should give schools the opportunity to work at mitigating learning loss.

Oklahoma’s State Department of Education announced Monday the start of a new multiyear initiative to best leverage those monies called Ready Together Oklahoma.

It will begin this summer, State Superintendent for Public Instruction Joy Hofmeister said.

“We arguably face the greatest challenge in education in modern history,” Hofmeister said. “And that is, how do we ensure that our kids will rebound from the pandemic stronger than ever?”

Answering that question will look different across Oklahoma.

Non-profit organization leaders, urban and rural superintendents flanked Hofmeister during her announcement at Cesar Chavez Elementary School in South Oklahoma City. And how they’ll lead the recovery in their communities will look different.

Part of the investment from the state will start with $6 million toward the Oklahoma Alliance of Boys and Girls Clubs and the Oklahoma Alliance of YMCAs. Hofmeister said the money is to support those organizations’ summer programming because they “have strong statewide infrastructures where we can funnel those funds right away and make good work with this summer.”

An additional $8 million will be made available to other organizations through a grant process soon.

It will largely be the responsibility of individual districts to catch students up over the summer, though.

At Sand Springs Public Schools for example, hundreds of students haven’t set foot in a classroom for more than a year, superintendent Sherry Durkee said.

“For many children this year has been extremely challenging,” she said. “We have a large number of students who depend on our schools for food, clothing, emotional support and so much more.”

The district — outside Tulsa — will offer a plethora of summer enrichment programs to prepare students for the rigor of academic life but also to resocialize them as they look to move forward in their education.

Oklahoma City Public Schools will offer many similar programs, said superintendent Sean McDaniel.

Federal money will go a long way to support it. The district will run 30 school bus routes to make sure kids can get to various activities and stay engaged. Meals will also be provided to students throughout the city, he said.

Rural districts face similar challenges, said Kyle Reynolds, superintendent of Woodward Public Schools. Again, summer programming will be important and will focus on engagement and field trips, he said.

Though most Woodward students were in person for the school year, quarantines and isolations were common.

“Our students, our teachers, our parents, our community of all felt these pressure points both physically and emotionally during the last year,” he said. “Now is the time for healing.”

Bang-Shift Cougar Is Back, Baby!

Back in 2016, David Freiburger and Steve Dulcich decided to show you exactly how not to rebuild an engine over a weekend and making a TV show about it. Using one of Freiburger’s favorite tools—the dingle-ball cylinder hone—and the fewest new parts possible, he and Dulcich demonstrated that you could get a clunker going again with minimal cash and maximum elbow grease. As one of the most hectic school years in history comes to an end, school administrators are working hard to try to figure out how the next school year will look, and how to spend their share of the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021.

While waiting on guidelines for how they can use the recent federal stimulus funds, A.J. Taylor, the superintendent of Safford Unified School District, said that trying to figure out how his district will use the money once it is released, and trying to figure out what the district will need in the next school year is “like building a plane in the air.”

Taylor said the district does not have any hard plans for what they’re going to use their estimated $5 million share of the funds for, but they’re looking toward upgrading educational technology that students use, like Chromebooks. They also hope to keep teaching staff on as their enrollment numbers stabilize.

Enrollment numbers for the district have been declining for five years. They dropped even further at the start of the school year, but Taylor said they steadily increased throughout the school year as more students came back to classrooms from distance learning.

Safford schools will not offer distance, online, learning to students next school year for kindergarten through eighth grade students. Mount Graham High School’s Henry Dunkerson Pathways Academy’s online education program for high school students, which existed prior to COVID-19, will continue to be offered.

“We recognize we do in-person best. It’s honestly the environment where we believe students do the best, especially younger ones,” Taylor said.

Eleven teachers resigned or retired during the past year, which Taylor said wasn’t out of the ordinary. Those positions will not be filled by full time staff Taylor added, as the district tries to balance their budget and class sizes through attrition.

The district is looking to fill four positions, a sixth grade teacher, and a special education teacher, positions that were filled by long-term substitute teachers, and a kindergarten teacher and a orchestra teacher.

Matthew Petersen, superintendent of Thatcher Unified School District, said his district is thinking of using the most recent COVID-19 relief funds to create a couple of new positions at the school, including a remote teacher, in hopes that the district can get certification and approval from the state to continue their distance learning program in the upcoming school year.

Petersen estimated there are about 70 students still participating in the district’s online, distance learning program.

Although the COVID-19 relief money for schools isn’t recurring, and districts have to allocate the money from the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 by 2024, Petersen said he believes the new positions in the district will be permanent positions because enrollment in the district is gradually increasing.

Thatcher is also looking to fill two teacher vacancies, a special education teacher, and an elementary school teacher.

Even though we are conducting our flight tests in a tenuous atmosphere over 180 million miles (290 million kilometers) from Earth, we model our methodical approach to experimental flight on the Wright brothers’ approach. Our plan from Day One has been to prepare like crazy, fly, analyze the data (like crazy), and then plan for an even bolder test in the next flight.

Material From the Wright Brothers’ First Airplane

This 0.5-inch x 0.5-inch (1.3 x 1.3 centimeter) square of unbleached muslin material from the Wright brothers’ first airplane was encapsulated in a protective polyamide film before being attached to a cable underneath the solar panel of NASA’s Ingenuity Mars Helicopter. Procured by the Wrights from a local department store in downtown Dayton, Ohio, the cotton fabric (called “Pride of the West Muslin”) was at the time mostly used for ladies undergarments. In the front parlor of their home, the Wrights cut the material into strips and used the family sewing machine to create wing coverings for their airplane Flyer 1, which achieved the first powered, controlled flight on Earth on Dec. 17, 1903. We’re being cautious with each new foray in the skies of Mars as we continue to build confidence in the capabilities of this new exploration platform. For the third flight, we’re targeting the same altitude, but we are going to open things up a bit too, increasing our max airspeed from 0.5 meters per second to 2 meters per second (about 4.5 mph) as we head 50 meters (164 feet) north and return to land at Wright Brothers Field. We’re planning for a total flight time of about 80 seconds and a total distance of 100 meters (330 feet).

While that number may not seem like a lot, consider that we never moved laterally more than about two-pencil lengths when we flight-tested in the vacuum chamber here on Earth. And while the 4 meters of lateral movement in Flight Two (2 meters out and then 2 meters back) was great, providing lots of terrific data, it was still only 4 meters. As such, Flight Three is a big step, one in which Ingenuity will begin to experience freedom in the sky. ​

After each of our flights, I have had the privilege of filling out our logbook and capturing the flight highlights — something pilots have been doing since the early days of flying. While I’ve made logbook entries before as a terrestrial fixed-wing pilot, these are the most unusual entries I have made. They are also the most satisfying, not only because they represent flight on another planet, but because each notation represents a trove of valuable data that our team has spent years preparing to obtain.

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — After a year hiatus, Kansas veterans may soon get to visit the nation’s Capitol free of charge.

Kansas Honor Flight is getting ready to take to the sky once again.

“We’re excited about getting started again. We have a lot of veterans who are on the waiting list. We need to get the WWII and Korean veterans going while they’re still around,” said Don Bigger, Kansas Honor Flight volunteer.

As travel picks back up, organizers are working to get their funds and plans in order. The trip costs $850, but it’s free for veterans.

“It’s all money that’s raised from the community. Wichita and Kansas are very good supporters of veterans,” Bigger said.

The pandemic pushed the waiting list to 900 veterans.

“It’s really important for a veteran to get on this flight,” he said. “They see the memorials that were built by the nation for them, and then when they come home, they get a really good welcome home – something they never got before.”

Kansas Honor Flight is waiting for approval to fly again from the National Honor Flight. They expect flights to return by August.

In the meantime, they are hoping community members will help them get veterans to Washington D.C. by supporting their fundraisers.
