The temperature was about -30 degrees Fahrenheit and the snow blew sideways. With windchill, the temperatures were an estimated -50 degrees F. Going outside was insane, but my brother, Mike, and I didn’t have much choice. We needed to deliver some desperately-needed food and water.

We bundled up and wrapped wool scarves over our faces so only our eyes were showing. Frostbite and hypothermia from the bitter cold was a definite possibility. Mom ordered us to stay together and get back inside as soon as possible.

Frostbite is not something limited to wilderness situations or rural areas. You could be in danger of frostbite if your car slides off the road during a blizzard. According to the Mayo Clinic, frostbite occurs when parts of the body are exposed to very cold temperatures, causing skin and underlying tissues to freeze. Your hands, feet, nose and ears are most likely to be affected.

If your skin looks white or grayish-yellow, is very cold and has a hard or waxy feel, you may have frostbite. Your skin may also itch, burn or feel numb. Severe or deep frostbite can cause blistering and hardening. As the area thaws, the flesh becomes red and painful.

Have some of those solar-powered outdoor garden lights on the path outside? Here’s how to adapt them to an interior emergency lighting setting.

Many of us use solar-powered accent lights outside, but don’t think of them as potential emergency interior lights. But it’s easy to adapt them to an urban emergency situation. All you have to do is bring them inside.

Some of the smaller wand-like lights are completely contained. Others have a rechargeable battery in them. Mine use Ni-CAD AA900, and you can easily find a charger for them.

When the lights go out, you can recharge the light by the sun. There are hand crank generators on the market that allow you to charge the light when it’s dark and gloomy.

Use the accent lights first in an emergency situation. They might get you through a dark night, saving the candles and lamp oil for times when you can’t recharge the solar lights

Here are some of the advantages of adapting the accent lights to interiors:

The lost family in Nevada was probably the most dramatic story of the storm that wreaked havoc on much of the country.

Briefly, the family went on an outing, their vehicle slid off the road, and they were stranded. They had few survival items with them, but still managed to survive with only minor injuries. The complete story is listed below.

Now, I question the common sense of going on an outing before an impending storm, but I don’t know everything about the situation. But everyone should carry a vehicle survival kit. And you should know how to shelter in your vehicle if you have to.

Here are several lessons to be learned from this situation in Nevada:

Leave a travel plan with someone: Over 200 searchers looked over a 6,000 square mile area before finding the vehicle. A note left with someone back home could have reduced this time. Learn how to provide the information that will get you found.
Know how to build a fire: I carry firemaking gear everywhere. In this case, the only thing that kept the family alive in the bitter cold was the ability to build a fire and heat rocks for warmth. It doesn’t matter if you’re in the wilderness, or in the aftermath of an urban disaster, the ability to make a fire for warmth may save your life.
Stay with the vehicle: You already have a better shelter than you can build, so stay put. Searchers always find the broken-down vehicles first.
Know how to improvise: Fire-heated rocks were placed on the spare tire, and warmed the vehicle. This was the only thing that kept everyone from freezing.
Carry blankets and sleeping bags: The situation would have been much safer if everyone had a warm sleeping bag. As it was, everyone had to huddle together for warmth.
Include food in the emergency kit: Nobody is going to starve in two or three days, but proper nutrition is really important for helping maintain core body heat.
