Review: The Cold Steel Canadian Belt Knife
Looking for an inexpensive, rigid knife for wild game processing? Take a look at the Cold Steel Canadian Belt Knife.

These well-used skinners all have a similar design. The C.T Fischer Nessmuk is on top; followed by a seven-inch butcher, a five-inch modified sheep skinner and a Cold Steel Canadian belt knife. (Pantenburg photo)
Then again with the activation of arousal cialis samples one can achieve the erect for longer hours. But, you should keep in mind that your erection should not last cialis discount pharmacy http://secretworldchronicle.com/tag/the-program/ longer than four hours. It is the same 100mg sildenafil ingredient and in the morning through the penis stiffens more than once. Pfizer invented the bestselling anti-impotency medicine and it has been shown that buy cheap cialis may strengthen sexual performance of males who try to use for the wrong reasons.
My appreciation for old stuff, err, I mean antiques, is particularly evident in my choice of cutlery.
I love the old traditional patterns and it’s nice to wonder what the designer was thinking when he/she came up with something new.
The Canadian Belt Knife is one of those traditional designs. In 1958, Dean Russell, a Canadian cutlery-store owner, designed a knife, according to Field and Stream magazine, and he chose Grohmann Cutlery in Pictou, Nova Scotia, to make it.
He called it the Canadian Belt Knife, and Russell’s knife could gut, skin, or cape. It was comfortable in any hand and could be held in any position, and its pouch-style belt sheath moved with you.
I’d read about the knife in the Herter’s Catalog (Now THAT will date me!) and always intended to add one to my cutlery accumulation.
Several years ago, as is my wont, I picked up a belt knife at the local outdoors store because it was made by Cold Steel, in the case, and the price was right. I’m always looking for inexpensive survival tools that will do the job, and a reputable company name is one guarantee that the product will perform.
Here are the stats on the Canadian Belt knife, according to the Cold Steel website:
Blade Length: 4″
Overall Length: 8 1/2″
Steel: German 4116 Stainless
Weight: 2.2 oz
Blade Thickness: 2.5 mm
Handle: 4 1/2″ Long High Impact Polypropylene
Sheath: Cor-Ex™ Sheath
Made in Taiwan
But nostalgia aside, if a knife doesn’t work well, I don’t keep it.
Considering what the Canadian was intended for, which is a general, all-around hunting knife, I put it through its paces. I don’t abuse knives in testing, and I think batoning firewood is overated. (Check out this video, where I demonstrate how to baton firewood with a butter knife).
Starting in the kitchen, I used the Canadian for an assortment of cooking tasks. It is a great meat and vegetable slicer. It doesn’t do very well as a potato peeler. It is a terrible filleting knife – the blade is too short, stiff and wide. But it works well for beheading and gutting panfish.
In the field though, it excels. The handle is easy to hold onto, and the design assures your hand probably won’t slip. It is a fine knife for whittling firewood and wiener sticks, and it is a good all around camp knife.
But probably the knife’s forte is skinning and processing wild game.
I used it to help cut up an elk, and the blade held an edge well. The handle fits my large (glove size) hand, and there was never any danger of my hand slipping.
The knife worked well for skinning rabbits, and helped in the processing of several chukars and pheasants. The Canadian did everything I needed from a hunting knife.
An inexpensive knife has to have some area where there is a compromise. In this case, it appears to be the sheath. It is little more than a thick piece of Cor-Ex material folded into an envelope with a sewn-on loop for carrying on a belt. It is adequate for protecting the blade, and it should be safe except under the most extreme conditions.
Do you need a Canadian Belt Knife?
It depends. It is probably a better all-around design than a lot of other knives on the market, but I don’t think it is the equal of the Mora. But a Canadian is a better skinner than a Mora, and if you anticipate needing a skinning knife some time, this is one choice.
Bottom line: It has to work for you. At about $20, you can afford to get one and try it out.

Living off the land – here’s the reality check

I admire and respect people who take the time and effort to learn hunting, foraging and trapping skills to glean sustenance from the wild. That skill level is much beyond what I could ever hope to achieve. But I am an avid hunter and fisherman, and I have learned a few things here and there.

Squirrel hunting is challenging, but the meat is tasty and nourishing. Sometimes a fleeting glimpse through the tree tops is all you’ll see.
In the early 1980s, I was young, single and lived in Mississippi, along the big river. My weekends were devoted to hunting and fishing, and I did very well. During my best year, I legally killed two deer, several dozen squirrels and several limits of ducks, probably about 25. I rented a freezer locker for all this meat, and I basically lived off what I had killed.
My standard lunch was a gumbo, stew or jambalaya I made the day before and carried in a thermos. I worked on my wild game recipes, and friends at work joked about the Yankee from Iowa who had moved to Mississippi to “live off the land.”
But even with that experience, there was no way I could survive long term, even if I could develop the necessary foraging skills.
Many times, despite my best efforts, I would get skunked fishing or might miss a shot. I never went hungry because of that, but that would be a different story if I was depending on harvesting my dinner. And even with the best and most efficient equipment, there are times when it seems as if all the game animals have vanished. Or there are days fishing when you can’t buy a bite.
I never got into trapping animals or netting fish, and that would have been an additional way to gather protein. But that is another skill set that would somehow have to be learned.
So when someone comments that he will “just learn to live off the land” as a hunter/gatherer when a disaster or long term emergency hits, I have to shake my head.
Here is an excellent post from Wood Trekker that gives the facts about this idea.

Several years ago, the editor at the newspaper I worked at tasked me to write a practical winter survival guide for Central Oregon. It was an investigative reporting assignment, and I interviewed local experts from the Deschutes

This Altoids tin survival kit weighs about as much as your IPod. Carry it in a waterproof container for added security. Don’t waste space!
County Search and Rescue, as well as local survival equipment tester, the late Jim Grenfell, and internationally-known survival expert Peter Kummerfeldt.
The end result of months of research and testing was a system that included a personal, pocket-sized kit as well as a complete backpack setup for hardcore winter survival. (No survival kit system is perfect, and no kit will work for everyone. View any system as a baseline for developing a kit that will work for you.)
The pocket-sized kit, which was designed to fit into an Altoids tin, drew some fire from the local “survival guru” due in part to his not reading the entire story and the warnings.
But dumping a canoe in some rapids a few years back proved to me that you must have gear on your person at all times. You could fall out of a canoe, get thrown off a horse, be in a vehicle accident etc. and end up separated from your equipment. Your only equipment may be what is in your pockets.
But there is a real danger with any survival kit. It may give the newcomer a false sense of security and self-confidence. A beginner may think the kit is a substitute for learning important survival skills.
The worst danger, IMO, is that a person will pick up a commercial mini kit, toss it in the daypack, and never learn how to use the components. Then, during an emergency, the kit may prove to be inadequate.
Here are five things a mini kit can’t do:
Save your life: No survival tool, or collection of tools, can save you. You will save yourself, according to Kummerfelt, and you can’t rely on anyone else or a single piece of gear. A cell phone might not work, the battery may run down, or there is no coverage. NEVER depend on being able to dial 911. Don’t rely on a GPS as part of your mini-kit – a GPS is as reliable as its batteries. You may break your compass, or drop your butane lighter into a creek or snowbank.
Be your only survival gear: A tiny, pocket-sized survival kit, at best, is a bare minimum selection for survival that is better than nothing. Carry a full-blown, complete Ten Essentials kit as part of your every day carry.
Replace skill and training: Training and experience trumps equipment every time. You must practice with every item in your kit. If you can’t use an item or it doesn’t work, discover that in your garage, not during an emergency.
Be a long term survival solution: You can’t rely on any kit for a long term solution to a flood, earthquake or other natural disaster. Long term survival requires long term prior planning.
Replace pre-planning: Leave a note before you go somewhere, so SAR knows where to start looking.
