So do you need a slingshot in your emergency gear? Let’s think about that while we look at the Survival Slingshot.

A slingshot as a survival tool

According to the dictionary, a slingshot is “…a forked stick, to which an elastic strap (or a pair of elastic bands connected by a small sling) is fastened to the two prongs, typically used for shooting small stones.”

The Survival Slingshot is a high tech version of a traditional slingshot.

According to the company brochure, the Survival Slingshot has a cast aluminum alloy hollow handle, with a steel brace and yoke. The end cap is also cast aluminum, and everything has an anodized finish. The bands are made of surgical tubing. The waterproof hollow handle provides eight cubic inches of storage space, and a compass is embedded in the cap.

For the techie improvement geek, the Survival slingshot has the potential for endless customization improvements.The taped holes in the front accessory mount and side rails use #4 fasteners. The side mount can accept a standard scope mount. All this means you can attach a tactical light and there are many options to mount a scope.

There are optional accessories that allow the slingshot to be converted to shooting arrows. This could be a good choice for extended survival situations, since it is usually a lot easier to find arrows than ball bearings once you’ve shot them.

How it works:

I have not handled a slingshot in a very long time, so the first thing I did was assemble the unit, and make sure all the screws and fastenings were tight. Then I started shooting it. My initial accuracy with the slingshot was predictable!

A viable survival tool has to be accurate, and all the scopes, laser sights and doo-hickys won’t make that happen, and you’ll have to put in some practice time if you intend to harvest small game animals. There are a lot of similarities between shooting a slingshot and a recurve bow. Drawing on my archery experience, here are some of the things  to practice.

 Start by zeroing  for maximum efficiency. Here’s how to do it:

Marksmanship basics:

  • Shoot the same ammo all the time. You can shoot any rock or missile that fits in the pouch, but that doesn’t mean you’ll be able to hit anything. Like in archery or precision rifle shooting, each round or missile should be a clone of the other.
  • Length of draw: As in archery, you need to practice so the bands are drawn to precisely the same place for each shot. This ensures uniform velocity, another critical aspect of accuracy.
  • Consistent anchor point: I use the right-hand corner of my mouth as the point where I hold at full draw. Experiment and see what works best for you.
  • Uniform release: I pinch the ball bearing in the pouch between my thumb and index finger, and release the shot by relaxing my grip. Do this over and over, and you should develop a consistent letoff.
  • Grip: Try to grasp the handle with the same pressure for each shot. As in handgun shooting, don’t grip too loosely, or you won’t be able to control the recoil. Too tightly may change point of impact.

Then shoot a lot, using the same sight picture. Set up targets at different ranges to check your ability. Before you release the ball bearing, concentrate on a consistent letoff.

Shooting a slingshot has to become instinctive. Putting on a lazer sight, tactical flashlight or scope doesn’t take away from the need to practice!

Survival Slingshot specs

Construction: The slingshot is solid, sturdy and well-made or aluminum and steel. With reasonable care it should last a long, long time.

Hollow handle: I’m not a fan of hollow handle survival tools. They are generally not very ergonomic for long term use, and I question the value of that tiny space when there is the potential it might compromise the handle’s strength. Also, I think most people need to carry the right items to take advantage of the space. (Check out this post) :-)

In this instance, the space could be well-used. I would dump the items (matches, fishing hooks and weights etc) that come with the slingshot, and use the handy containers to carry ammunition. Everyone should have a well-thought-out emergency kit anyway, and you need to store as much ammo as possible with the slingshot.

The compass in the handle is adequate to give a general direction, but it is strictly a backup. Carry a good magnetic compass.

Bands: These are made of surgical tubing, and the ones that came with my slingshot were  pretty stiff. In any slingshot, a visual inspection of the tubing should be done before each use. When a band fails, it generally happens when you are at full draw, and that will definitely get your attention!

Accuracy: Since I haven’t practiced much, my slingshot accuracy is nothing to brag about. But I can regularly whack a tennis ball sized target at 10 feet, and that would be adequate to harvest a rabbit crouching in the weeds or a bird hunkering down in the brush. The brochure warns that the slingshot can be dangerous to 250 yards, and you must always be careful that the ball bearings don’t ricochet off a hard surface. 

Do you need a slingshot in your emergency gear?

No, if all you intend to do is stow the slingshot and take it out when it’s needed. No matter what sighting devices are installed, there is still the need to practice. If you won’t commit to practicing with the slingshot, it won’t do you much good.

But if you will invest the time to becoming proficient with the slingshot, there are a lot of advantages.

  • Silent: You can shoot a slingshot in a crowded area, as when squirrel or pigeon hunting in the city, and nobody will hear it.
  • Save ammo: A good slingshotter could conserve .22 rimfire cartridges or shotgun shells by using a slingshot for the easier small game shots. When the ball bearings run out, carefully selected rocks could be used.
  • Easily carried: The Survival Slingshot folds into a compact, lightweight package, and it would fit nicely in an emergency pack.
  • Reasonably priced: The Survival Slingshot costs about $50, and that is a whole lot less than even the cheapest .22 handgun.

Heat stress injuries to the human body as a result of exposure to environments where elevated temperatures, high humidity with minimal air movement can cause raised body temperatures resulting in life threatening illness if not treated quickly and effectively.

Of particular medical concern is heat stroke, which if left untreated, or treated ineffectively, can result in the death of the victim.   According to the Center for Disease Control “…an average of 618 deaths occur in the United States each year as a result of exposure to excessive natural heat.”  

When an active, un-acclimatized individual, who lacks adequate protective clothing, is exposed to high temperatures, high humidity situations without adequate supplies of water, and without shade, heat stress injuries are immanent.    Heat stress injuries can be viewed as a progression of medical issues that range from mild (heat cramps) to moderate (heat exhaustion) and finally to severe threats to life (heat stroke).  A progression that, if not acted upon effectively and quickly can result in the death of the victim.  With the limited equipment available in the field the emphasis needs to be on early recognition of what is happening and effective treatment to reverse the cascading events.

Heat Cramps are spasms of the skeletal muscles resulting in excruciating pain.   Heat cramps do not typically evolve into heat exhaustion.  Nonetheless they should serve as a warning that the body is reacting to heat stress resulting from exposure to high activity levels under elevated environmental heat conditions, inadequate water intake and with salt depletion.  Treatment of heat cramps necessitates removing the patient from the environment causing the problem, resting in the coolest area available and replacing the electrolytes with fluids or salty food – not salt tablets.   I have also had good results using Emergen-C.

Heat Exhaustion is a mild to moderate form of heat illness that will progress to heat stroke if not treated quickly and effectively.  While it is usually not possible under field condition to determine body core temperatures, the victim of heat exhaustion will commonly have core temperature of 101° F. to 105° F.  Other signs and symptoms include rapid heart rate, pale color, nausea, dizziness, headache and lightheadedness.  Profuse sweating is common but not always present.  Treatment of heat exhaustion includes the removal of the victim from the environment if possible, treating for shock, and, assuming the patient can swallow, providing large quantities of water – 1 to 2 quarts minimum.

Heat Stroke is a life threatening medical crisis, which, in the absence of large quantities of cool water, is very difficult to treat in field.   A heat-stroked patient will manifest major central nervous system abnormalities – seizures, delirium, stupor, coma and usually, but not always, dry skin.    Since heat-stroked victims have lost the ability to sweat and cannot cool themselves their body core temperatures may rise above 107° F. with death following quickly unless external cooling can be accomplished.  Treatment.  The victim must be cooled as quickly as possible.  Transport to shade or erect shade over the victim.  Spray with cool water and fan vigorously to promote evaporative cooling and the lowering of the individual’s core temperature.  Arms and legs can be massaged to stimulate the flow of cool blood back to the core. Treat for shock.

– Acclimatization.  The human body has an amazing capacity to adapt to a hot environment.  Exercising in a hot environment can bring about acclimatization.  The exercise must be of sufficient intensity, frequency and duration to elevate the skin and core temperature and to cause profuse sweating.  This adjustment process takes approximately ten days to reach the point where the body is able to maximize its ability to cool itself by sweating efficiently while at the same time minimizing the loss of electrolytes – especially sodium and potassium.

– Water.  Every activity that takes place in the human body takes place in a water environment and when adequate supplies of water are not

consumed body systems begin to malfunction.  Water is also the fundamental component needed to ensure adequate sweating required for evaporative cooling.  Sweating, a normal activity of the skin, is designed to keep the body cool in hot or humid surroundings.  Sweat glands produce a salty fluid that, when evaporated on the skin surface, produces cooling.  

In a hot, humid environment, with insufficient water intake, the ability to sweat begins to malfunction and the onset of serious medical issues – heat exhaustion and heat stroke, becomes likely.  The problem is exacerbated in high humidity environments where sweat drips from the skin rather than being evaporated with little cooling taking place.    The amount of water needed to prevent dehydration, a factor in all heat stress medical issues, varies from individual to individual and from one emergency scenario to another.   Suffice to say that a person who is drinking enough water to ensure that their urine is clear, or nearly so, and is urinating five to six times a day is unlikely to become dehydrated and therefore unlikely to become a heat stress victim.

– Skin Protection.   The body’s skin surfaces must be covered or sunburn – will occur.   While some exposure to ultraviolet radiation is necessary for good health – the production of Vitamin D for example, the sunburn that results from prolonged exposure causes early aging of the skin, cataracts, and skin cancer.  All fabrics provide some degree of protection but dry, tight weave, dark colored fabrics provide the best protection.   Clothing manufactured from fabrics with a high Sun Protection Factor (SPF) is also available.  These fabrics are either extremely tightly woven materials or they are chemically treated to provide the needed SPF.  In short fabrics used in high heat, high humidity environments should be absorbent and lightweight. The more immediate benefit of covering the skin surfaces is the reduction of body water loss and therefore the prevention of dehydration.

The uses of sunscreens, “…..products designed to moderate the development of sunburn,” are another form of skin protection.   The ability of a sunscreen to protect a person’s skin is determined by its SPF.  Laboratory studies have shown that a sunscreen with an SPF of 15 blocks 93% of UVB exposure and should provide sufficient protection however, in the field the application of a sun screen is often applied too late, too little is applied and when applied, is too uneven to achieve good protection.  Consequently an SPF of 30 should be used in hopes that a higher degree of sunburn protection can be achieved.

Venturing out into hot environments without appropriate clothing and with only limited quantities of water, hoping that nothing bad is going to happen, is like going to the local casino – you might get lucky and win but all too often you loose!

  • Collect those candles/wax you don’t need and would probably throw away. Get some cotton balls and/or quilted cotton pads.
  • Melt the wax (being very careful!) Overheated wax can produce smoke and fumes that self ignite. The safest method is to use a double boiler outside. Once the wax is liquified, SHUT OFF THE HEAT!
  • Using tongs, dip the cotton ball/cotton pad about halfway into the liquid wax. Do this quickly – the cotton is very absorbent, and you want to leave some of the material untreated for easy lighting.
  • Place the cotton on aluminum foil, on a cookie sheet to cool and harden.
  • Test the firestarter.
  • Store the finished product in a plastic bag.

That’s all there is to it. Be sure to check out the firestarter, since candles vary greatly. Some of the dripless variety don’t work all that well for firestarter.

All of us have budget constraints (well, except for Congress!) and saving money on some survival/preparedness items is just common sense. Research and find out what things you can make yourself, and you’ll save funds for items/tools you can’t compromise on (knife, boots, sleeping bag or proper clothing.)
