ANCHORAGE, Alaska – Volunteers slung bales of hay onto a table Thursday, where they were swiftly stuffed inside blue plastic bags, twirled and shut with twist ties before being dragged off to waiting pallets.
The 60 or so people in safety vests weren’t participating in some type of agricultural competition. Instead, their efforts will help ensure that the canine participants in the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race have some place warm and dry to bed down when their mushers stop along the 1,000-mile (1,609-kilometer) trail between Anchorage and Nome.
The so-called straw drop is the first volunteer event of the Iditarod race, said Mark Nordman, the race director and marshal. More event follow next week, including people helping prepare shipments of food for both the dogs and the mushers to the checkpoints.
Volunteers including people off work for the day to retirees to members of youth or church groups prepared about 1,500 bales Thursday. The Iditarod air force, a group of volunteer pilots, will then fly the bales to the 20 checkpoints along the trail for use by the 800 or so dogs expected to race.
“The musher actually takes the straw, breaks the bale apart and just puts it down, like you’d do bedding over the top of a plant, although each dog gets a warm nest,” Nordman said.
The race over treacherous Alaska terrain, including two mountain ranges, the frozen Yukon River and the ice-covered Bering Sea, starts March 7 in Anchorage with the fan-friendly ceremonial start. The actual race begins the next day in Willow, about 50 miles (81 kilometers) north of Anchorage. The winner is expected in the old Gold Rush town of Nome, on the Bering Sea coast, about 10 or 11 days later.
Sarah Koonce showed up early Thursday morning to volunteer, just off the night shift.
“When we heard about the volunteering opportunity, we thought it would be great to get involved,” she said.
Koonce, a native of England, is awed by Alaska’s natural beauty, and that plays a role in what drew her to the Iditarod. “Alaska has beautiful landscapes, mountains and this time of the the year, with the snow, it’s so pretty,” she said. “So it’s just a place to be and a great race to be a part of.”
Another volunteer called the experience “awesome.”
Zachary Brinkerhoff of Evanston, Wyoming, is a missionary with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. He about two dozen other missionaries, sporting work clothes and their elder name tags, stacked the bales of hay and hauled them to pallets throughout the warehouse.
“I absolutely love this, to be able to see the Iditarod in the community,” Brinkerhoff said.

U.S. Northern Command is executing plans to prepare for a potential pandemic of the novel coronavirus, now called COVID19, according to Navy and Marine Corps service-wide messages issued this week.
An executive order issued by the Joint Staff and approved by Defense Secretary Mark Esper this month directed Northern Command and geographic combatant commanders to initiate pandemic plans, which include ordering commanders to prepare for widespread outbreaks and confining service members with a history of travel to China.
The Navy and Marine Corps messages, issued Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively, reference an executive order directing U.S. Northern Command to implement the Department of Defense Global Campaign plan for Pandemic Influenza and Infectious Diseases 3551-13.
The document serves as the Pentagon’s blueprint for planning and preparing for widespread dispersion of influenza and previously unknown diseases.
U.S. Northern Command said Wednesday it was directed the Joint Staff Feb. 1 to commence “prudent planning” in their assigned role synchronizing the department’s plans for pandemic flu and disease.
But in no way “does the planning indicate a greater likelihood of an event developing. As military professionals, planning for a range of contingencies is something we owe the American people,” Navy Lt. Cmdr. Mike Hatfield said.
“We coordinate with other combatant commands to assess potential impacts in the event of a pandemic and we ensure the U.S. military is poised to respond as required,” Hatfield said in a statement. “The military profession fosters a culture of planning, and the fact that we are coordinating planning efforts across the geographical combatant commands is consistent with how we prepare to respond, if directed.”

According to the service messages, military commanders have been asked to confine any service member who has been to China since Feb. 2 to their residences or, if they live in an open barracks or share a bathroom with others, restrict them to a temporary lodging facility for 14 days.
The restricted service members will be assessed daily for fever by medical personnel by phone or in person and wear protective gear if they personally conduct the medical checks, according to the messages. Should they display symptoms, they must seek medical attention, but call their military treatment facility first to inform them of their travel.
The Marine Corps message advises civilian employees and contractors, as well as any family members returning from China, to follow Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidance to detect the virus and prevent its spread, which include voluntarily remaining at home, limiting close contact with people and animals, self-monitoring and seeking medical care if symptoms develop.
The Marine Corps also has told commanders to work with military treatment facilities on developing and executing any response and stay up-to-date on CDC guidance regarding the virus.
It does not publicly release its service-wide messages and has not issued any since the executive order.
The Air Force does not publicly disclose its service-wide messages.

Communities in the Pioneer Valley are receiving a range of money from the program, from planning grants for Hatfield, Southampton and Shutesbury, worth $20,000, $22,000 and $27,000 respectively, up to a $572,250 action grant for Deerfield.
In Northampton, the $225,000 action grant will go toward restoring the Pine Grove Golf Course on Old Wilson Road.
Wayne Feiden, director of planning and sustainability, said the golf course will soon be acquired by the city after officials set aside $650,000 to buy the 105 acres.
With the state money, natural drainage will be restored by removing many existing systems, such as catch basins, manholes and drains. Barbed wire and concrete jersey barriers will also be taken away from the property, to help deal with more water runoff as climate change produces bigger storms.
“Restoring the natural systems on this site means that water will stay on the site for longer, supporting wildlife and avoiding downstream flooding,” Feiden said.
Another aspect of the project is growing more trees for carbon sequestration and creating a cooler micro-climate on the site, Feiden said.
The state grant program was initiated in 2017, and is intended to help municipalities deal with the effects of climate change.
Amherst will use a portion of its $100,000 to hire a consultant to develop a climate action, adaptation and resiliency plan with assistance from Sustainability Coordinator Stephanie Ciccarello and the town’s Energy and Climate Action Committee.
Town Manager Paul Bockelman said this will move Amherst toward the Town Council’s goal of becoming carbon neutral by 2050.
“This grant will provide additional resources to build out our climate action plan and ensure vulnerable communities are able to engage in the process that impacts their lives most directly,” Bockelman said.
The action grant award follows a $29,000 planning grant last year, which was used to identify vulnerabilities to climate change.
Ciccarello said the grant will also set the town on a path to reduce emissions by the town and schools, and by homes, businesses and institutions.
In Deerfield, residents recently approved a $196,895 match to pay to replace the failing Kelleher Drive culvert, install green infrastructure at Deerfield Elementary School and town center, and update bylaws to promote climate resiliency and low-impact development.
Also receiving grants were Holyoke, which will use $93,850 to complete mapping of impervious surfaces in the city, Pelham, which will get $140,000 to install a variable refrigerant flow HVAC system at its Community Center so the building that houses the library and emergency services can be used during extreme temperature events, and Plainfield, which will have $33,550 to do a culvert replacement and surface repairs on Bow Street.
In a statement, Gov. Charlie Baker said the money shows a commitment to building long-term resiliency in critical infrastructure, and ensuring cities and towns have resources to prepare for the challenge of climate change.
“The MVP program is providing a glimpse at the monumental scale of this challenge, which is why I filed the ResilientMA legislation, which would provide a new and sustained funding source for climate resilience projects,” Baker said.
