My 50-year high school reunion is approaching. On Sept. 21, a bunch of 67- and 68-year-olds will gather at a country club roughly in the vicinity of Lawrence High School in New Jersey. It’ll be the first reunion I’ve attended, and I’m a bit nervous.

Some classmates have posted recent pictures on the reunion website. None of us look like we did in 1969. As you know, I’m proud to be a farmer. Fashion is not our strength, but I do want to look my best. So the ragged, stained clothes, and manure-cured boots will stay at home. High school garb in 1969 consisted of skirts, jumpers, or dresses (for the girls, anyway). I intend to continue that tradition. I haven’t worn a dress in recent memory, but they do still sell them, right?

Makeup will be another out-of-character stretch. I used to buy potions and lotions and wear mascara, all of which were expensive and mysterious. Chad O’Shea was the Patriots from 2009-2018 before accepting the offensive coordinator position in Miami. He was brought there by new head coach Brian Flores in the offseason. 

That uncertainty has left the Ravens in a bit of a state of flux as they prepare for the season opener in Miami.

“I’ve been watching Patriots stuff, Miami stuff,” Lamar Jackson said. “They let a lot of guys go. They had a lot of new guys come in this week and this past Saturday. So we’re going to have to see. We’ve been watching film on them. We’re just going to have to see when we get out there.”

Flores spent 15 years with the Patriots organization before he left for his first head coaching job in the NFL. That’s led to two teams to study for the Ravens, unsure of what to expect from the Dolphins.

“I’m just trying to watch some New England stuff,” Thomas said. “Obviously, it’s different personnel with Tom Brady and the guys around him. I’m trying to get a feel for what they like to do. It’s a lot of quick game, but there’s nothing out of the ordinary that we should be scared of or anything like that. We’re just going to go out there and play.”

But even with what the Dolphins have put out on film in the preseason, there are still a few curveballs to be expected. After all, if the Ravens are planning on unveiling some new looks, they’re expecting the Dolphins to do so, too.

BEECH ISLAND, S.C. (WRDW/WAGT) — A local church in Beech Island is stepping up tonight to help with families seeking refuge from the storm.

Volunteers at Heights Church set up church classrooms with air mattresses for evacuees. Organizations across Aiken County are prepping to help families leaving the coast.

Box by box, volunteer by volunteer, even strangers are showing up to help, the Aiken Red Cross is stocking up to help thousands leaving the coast.

“We are getting all the supplies that we need to feed people. Because we do feed people, we provide snacks, water. We also provide cots and blankets and things like that,” said Marcia Bergtholdt, a volunteer at Aiken Red Cross

A truck is headed to Bamberg and Orangeburg County shelters.

Aiken County Emergency Officials are also offering resources to those counties.

“Aiken right now is on a hold. We are waiting to see how the traffic is, how the storm moves,” said Berhtholdt.

It’s a waiting game for the Albrecht Center too, waiting to fill these kennels.

The shelter already picked up 18 dogs from Charleston yesterday and they’re using the education center as extra space.

“Our adoption area is now full. Our holding area is now full. We’re maxed out,” said Barbara Nelson, the CEO of the SPCA Albrecht Center.

This means they need volunteers to clean and walk dogs and more pups may be on the way.

“Because some of the human shelters don’t take pets, people are asking us to take their pets too. So, that’s gonna be pretty difficult,” said Nelson.

All of this is for people moving inland and out of the path of a major hurricane.

“All the arrangements have been set up ahead of time. So, we’re good on that. We just need the go, if the state decides that’s what we’re gonna do,” said Bergtholdt.

In Beech Island, the Heights Church pastor says they’ve been hosting families over the past few years. He says there’s a big need as hotels fill up.

As Dorian continued to strengthen Sunday, Charleston-area governments prepared for a possible landfall in South Carolina later this week, or potential flooding and heavy winds that could impact the area even if the storm skirts the coastline.

All over the Two River area, kids of all ages are getting ready for their first day. From preschool through college, that first day in the classroom can be a daunting or dynamic experience.

As the big day approaches, children about to begin preschool may experience a range of emotions, including excitement, anticipation and even a little anxiety or nervousness. Parents can help their children manage such emotions by taking various steps to make the first day of preschool as fun as possible.

The American Pediatrics Association suggests starting your child on their school sleep/wake schedule a week or so ahead of time so that time change is not a factor on their first couple of days at school.

One of the best ways to help a child adjust to a new schedule is ensuring they’re well-rested and prepared. “Make sure they get enough sleep,” said Barbara Mullen, director of Ivy Hill Preschool in Rumson and Middletown. “Pack everything the night before. Bring their ‘luvies’, if they need them.”

Other ways to help ease into the first day of preschool:

• Request a class list. Some schools may not provide a class list and some will. Parents who can access the class list can go over the list with their children before the start of school. Doing so can lessen youngsters’ anxiety as they will no doubt recognize a few familiar names on the list. Knowing friends will be in class alongside them will no doubt make kids more excited for their first day.

• Discuss activities with school officials, including teachers. Some kids may not be nervous about going to preschool, but might not be looking forward to the end of summer. In such instances, reaching out to teachers and/or other school officials to learn what kids will be doing can help. Discuss first-day and early-year activities with teachers and then share that information with kids. Once children learn how much fun they’ll be having in class, they might be less reluctant to say goodbye to summer.

Discussing what will happen in school is helpful. “We’re all afraid of the unknown,” said Zachary Klausz, director of A Child’s Place in Lincroft. “Talk it through to dispel the fear of the unknown. A lot of times families do very well when they make a plan in advance of how it’s going to go happen,” he said. “There’s a comfort when parents make a plan, structure and stick to it.”

• Let youngsters choose their clothes for the first day. When shopping for first-day-of-school attire, let kids choose their own outfits, explaining to them that the first day of school is a special day worthy of new clothes. Once the big day arrives, kids may forget their nerves and just be excited to get dressed and show off their new duds, especially if they’re wearing clothes they hand-picked themselves.

• Attend a school orientation day. If your child’s school hosts a student/family orientation day, be sure to attend. Orientation will give kids a chance to see their classroom and meet fellow students as well as their teacher. That familiarity can calm children’s nerves on the first day.

Make sure to touch base with your child’s new teacher at the beginning or end of the day so the teacher knows how much you want to be supportive of your child’s school experience.

“I cater to working parents,” Mullen said, and for young children keeping parents apprised of what their child is doing throughout the day can be helpful.

So when it’s time to say goodbye remember preschool is a team effort. “We are not Mary Poppins but we are really good with children,” said Mullen.

Mullen believes parents should make their goodbyes quick. “They need to be quick. The longer they stay, the harder the separation,” she said.

Klausz says often parents worry their child will have trouble separating and instead ”it’s the parents standing outside in the lobby that need the consoling,” he said.

“First rule of thumb, is listen to your children and follow their cue. Some separate very easily and that’s great,” said Klausz. “Some have a harder time and that’s OK too. You have to be aware of the child and listen to their cue.

“When a preschool has done its job right, and built a bridge from classroom to home,” he said, “a child picks up on that.”
