CHICAGO — Thousands are expected to be at Navy Pier Thursday for the Fourth of July fireworks display.
By 11 a.m., some crowds were already arriving. The show is set to start a 9:30 p.m. and will run for 15 minutes — the longest fireworks display in the city. Those who want to get a good spot to see the display are encouraged to arrive early.
Authorities say visitors should take public transportation. The CTA will additional buses and trains running Thursday.
Those that want to drive and park at the pier need to arrive in the early afternoon. Navy Pier officials said the gates will likely close around 7 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. when the pier is at capacity at 75,000 people.
While the pier actually holds more than 75,000 officials are keeping it to around that number in case of inclement weather.
If severe weather enters the city, there is an evacuation plan in place.
The pier will be providing updates via its Twitter account throughout the day.
Those going to Navy Pier can expect to see extra security both from the pier and from the Chicago Police Department. Everyone will have to pass through a checkpoint.

Riley Motorsports will revert to its spare Mercedes-AMG GT3 chassis for this weekend’s Mobil 1 Sportscar Grand Prix at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park following an early race-ending exit from the Sahlen’s Six Hours of The Glen.
The Wynn’s-sponsored No. 33 car was severely damaged in the opening lap accident in the Esses, which was triggered by contact between the No. 912 Porsche 911 RSR of Laurens Vanthoor and the No. 4 Chevrolet Corvette C7.R of Tommy Milner, who spun across the track before getting collected by Ben Keating.
It marked the end of the day for Keating and co-drivers Jeroen Bleekemolen and Felipe Fraga and the quick decision by the Bill Riley-led crew to begin the rebuild the car around its spare chassis that it had on the truck.
“I think it was the way it caught the rear of the car [that caused the damage],” Riley told Sportscar365. “We probably could have fixed the car and ran it at Mosport possibly but we’ve felt more safe just doing the whole thing.”
Work began building up the ex-WeatherTech-owned chassis during the race, per IMSA’s specific guidelines for spare chassis.
“IMSA has rules on how backup cars can be,” Riley explained. “So it’s a complete car but it doesn’t have suspension, gearbox or body.
“So we’re building up the gearbox to what spec we want for Mosport and putting on all of the suspension [components].
“This car has been in the trailer since Daytona so now we have to reconfigure it, like what side the fueling is on and things like that and get it ready that way.”
Despite the tight turnaround time to CTMP, Riley said he doesn’t expect any delays.
“Having all day [Sunday], unfortunately, to work on it, we’ll have it running by Monday night and then leave Wednesday morning for Mosport,” he said.
No. 4 Corvette Repairable for This Weekend
For the second consecutive race, Corvette Racing is facing a significant rebuild for its No. 4 car, although this time, a spare chassis will not be needed.
Team manager Ben Johnson told Sportscar365 they should have repairs completed by Monday night at Watkins Glen before making the trip North of the Border.
As was the case with the Riley mechanics, work began on the damaged No. 4 car during the race itself, with the crew initially targeting for it to return near the end the race for a systems check. Prospects of that, however, diminished once the extent of the damage was determined.
“At least we don’t have to [work on it] overnight,” Johnson said. “We can take our time and make sure it’s done right. We’ll be back at it at Mosport.”
Milner’s race-ending accident continued the No. 4 crew’s string of bad luck, dating back to the start of the WeatherTech SportsCar Championship season.
“They’ve had a rough go of it,” Johnson said. “I don’t think it was any fault of the drivers or any fault of the team.
“It’s the unfortunate bit of motorsports. A little bit of wheel action in the Esses and it’s always pretty dicey and to be taken out in the first lap is unfortunate for sure.”

NASA yesterday announced details about its next major mission called Dragonfly, which aims to take a trip to Titan. The space agency said that it wants to launch a spaceship to Saturn’s moon by 2026, that’ll reach the moon’s surface by 2034. The mission was selected after a two-and-a-half year competition under ‘the New Frontiers’ program that refers to missions that cost less than $1 billion.
A multi-rotor vehicle – with eight rotors and drone-like flying capabilities – will stay on Titan’s surface for 2.7 years studying possible forms of life. As Titan’s atmosphere is similar to the early stages of Earth, it’ll look for prebiotic chemical processes to try and unlock mysteries of the origin of life.
NASA explained Dragonfly will travel to different environments to study liquids and organic materials:
Dragonfly will explore diverse environments from organic dunes to the floor of an impact crater where liquid water and complex organic materials key to life once existed together for possibly tens of thousands of years. Its instruments will study how far prebiotic chemistry may have progressed. They also will investigate the moon’s atmospheric and surface properties and its subsurface ocean and liquid reservoirs. Additionally, instruments will search for chemical evidence of past or extant life.
Dragonfly has chosen a calm weather period to land, along with a safe initial landing site, and scientifically interesting targets based on the data from NASA‘s earlier mission to Saturn, Cassini. It will first land at the equatorial “Shangri-La” dune fields, a terrain very similar to the linear dunes in Namibia. Then it’ll travel a total of 175km consisting of short, 8km flights, and reach the Selk impact crater to study past evidence of liquid water and organics.
NASA‘s Administrator, Jim Bridenstine, said that just a few years ago this mission wouldn’t have been possible, but now the team is ready. Thomas Zurbuchen, NASA’s Associate Administrator for Science, said that Dragonfly’s observations can unlock new secrets to the origin of life:

When AMD announced its Navi GPU architecture and publicly showed the chip beating past Nvidia’s RTX 2060 and RTX 2070, at modestly lower prices, it was inevitable that Team Green would respond. By all accounts, that response is being drawn up and will debut in the very near future.
The Nvidia RTX 2060 Super, RTX 2070 Super, and RTX 2080 Super are all supposed to debut next week, but the rollout will be staggered. The 2060S and 2070S review embargos will lift same-day, with the 2080S following later in July. Supposedly, each GPU will use the GPU from the tier “above” it, but this doesn’t make a lot of sense for the RTX 2060 / 2070 — these two cards are both based on the same physical GPU (TU106). The Inquirer reports that there may also be a 2070 Ti Super and 2080 Ti Super, with their own new GPUs.
There are a few things we don’t know yet, including what happens to existing RTX products when the new Super cards launch. Nvidia, however, had two basic ways it could play this situation: It could cut price on the RTX family to bring it more in line with Navi, or it could bolster RTX performance in an attempt to increase the size of the gap between itself and AMD.
It isn’t hard to see why Nvidia would go the route of boosting current performance, and we expect Super cards to come in above current RTX pricing, not below it. When Nvidia built its current RTX family, it made the decision to dramatically increase prices at every price point. Introducing new cards at higher prices but with increased performance gives Nvidia the option to improve its price/positioning without cutting costs.
Imagine, for example, that the upcoming AMD RX 5700XT is 5 percent faster than the RTX 2070 but $50 less expensive. Nvidia could cut the price of the RTX 2070 to match the RX 5700XT on price-performance and simply eat the reduction — or it could either keep the RTX 2070 in-market at the same or a slight price cut and introduce a higher-performing RTX 2070S at an improved price/performance ratio. All Nvidia has to do to improve the price/performance ratio on the RTX family is increase price less than the amount it boosts performance.
The other reason Nvidia might well prefer to raise prices rather than cutting them has to do with Navi’s die size. As the screenshot above shows, AMD’s Navi is a 251mm2 part. The RTX 2060 and 2070 are both 445mm2 parts. RTX 2080 is even larger, at 545 mm2. We don’t know anything about relative yield for 12nm versus 7nm chips, but AMD has at least a potential advantage, in terms of being able to absorb a lower price point. Neither company, however, is likely very interested in kicking off a major price war. After being forced into less-than-ideal price banding with its current products and with its Vega family poorly positioned, AMD likely wants to improve its price banding and overall margins just as much as to rebuild market share.

Two weeks ago, Guy “Dr. Disrespect” Beahm was banned from Twitch for streaming inside the bathrooms at E3 in violation of state law, Twitch policy and possibly other laws, considering there were minors in the bathroom when he broadcast his stream. This won’t be Disrespect’s first comeback stream. He took a leave of absence from streaming after marital trouble stemming from his infidelity. His comeback stream broke Twitch records at the time with 387,000 concurrent views (this was before Ninja’s rise to prominence), so arguably the whole thing worked out pretty well for him. It’s hard to not see shades of that this time around: a 14-day ban is arguably a financial loss for Disrespect, but it could easily be offset by a massive comeback stream paired with the publicity that comes along with a fresh round of headlines. Many warn that events like this can wind up reinforcing toxic culture on Twitch rather than doing anything to warn others against this sort of behavior. The message seems clear: large streamers are allowed to violate Twitch policy without much in the way of genuine consequences. Sen. Amy Klobuchar jokingly told the crowd at the Planned Parenthood forum in South Carolina that at Rep. Jim Clyburn’s fish fry, she was trying to get some of the guys on the debate stage to promise to kneel when she speaks so she looks taller. Klobuchar will be near O’Rourke and Gov. Jay Inslee.
Sen. Cory Booker has been doing a lot of pushups through debate prep, according to a campaign official. Monday’s prep session included a La Croix and popcorn after doing some bicep curls between sessions. A memo released by the campaign states that Booker’s goal for the debates is to introduce himself to Democrats tuning in for the first time. He will emphasize why he is running for president and his background living in Newark.
Rep. Eric Swalwell’s campaign told CBS News that Swalwell “is working with his team of advisers this week to ensure that he makes the most of this opportunity to communicate his vision of a safer, healthier nation in which all Americans share in our prosperity. Time will be limited on this debate stage, but he’s confident that a young, experienced leader who lives like Americans do and feels what they feel can make a real impression.”
Former Housing and Urban Development Secretary Julián Castro has used the last multi-candidate events to prepare for the debate, according to a campaign spokesperson. At these events, he has practiced differentiating himself from other candidates and winning over crowds. The spokesperson also said Castro has been rolling out more policy and working with his team during sessions at their hotel condensing 15-page policy rollouts to one minute bites.
Former Maryland Rep. John Delaney plans to go after Sen. Bernie Sanders on healthcare. His campaign believes there will be a Sanders-esque candidate at the end of the primary, whether it’s Sanders himself or Sen. Elizabeth Warren, and then a moderate candidate. Delaney’s team believes he will be that candidate over former Vice President Joe Biden, who the campaign believes has his own lane that’s prone to gaffes. To prepare, Delaney has been doing one-on-one questions with his staff and studying the 2016 GOP debates because of the field size, and the 2008 Democratic debates which had the last large field of Democrats.
Author Marianne Williamson’s communications director Patricia Ewing said the campaign wasn’t worried about standing out on a crowded stage and added, “I would if she were a typical politician but she is not. She stands out in every crowd, like in South Carolina. She has a unique message and voice, that should stand out.” In terms of prep, Ewing said Williamson is rehearsing and talking to people about issues.
Gov. Jay Inslee told Stephanie Ruhle in an interview on MSNBC Tuesday that he was looking forward to the debate, saying “it should be fun.” He compared his strategy approaching this debate to his time as a basketball player: “I played basketball for many years and during practice you try and beat the other guy one-on-one. When it’s game time, you unite. I’m going to show a record of unparalleled success.” He also told reporters in the Little Haiti neighborhood of Miami about how he plans to use his first introductory moment to voters. He said progressive policies “cannot succeed ultimately unless we defeat the climate crisis. Making this pledge that defeating the climate crisis will be the priority of the United States if given this honor. It will be the organizing principle of my administration, proved in Washington you can develop a clean energy economy while improving access to education, healthcare … We have to put the priority and muscle behind defeating the climate crisis. And that’s what I intend to do.”
And on the Republican side…
According to White House producer Fin Gomez, some of Mr. Trump’s senior campaign and White House aides want him to tweet. The president is uncertain whether he will, but a senior adviser says to expect him to. It may not be a live-tweet format, more just tweeting at his opponents sporadically.
Mr. Trump said he might live tweet, but also seemed uncertain in an interview with Fox News’ Sean Hannity about six days ago.
“I wasn’t thinking about it, but maybe I will now,” Trump said to Hannity. “Instead of fake news, I’ll make them correct news. And that’s OK.”
The RNC will engage in counter-programming during both nights of the debate. According to an RNC official, the committee will have a war room made up of 10 people monitoring every network, a research and rapid response team blasting fact checks on candidates’ responses, a social/digital operation, and surrogates to dominate the airwaves across national and local television as well as radio. In Miami, RNC Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel will attend a socialist-focused earned media event as well as a roundtable with Cuban business owners.

SEN. KAMALA HARRIS: Harris announced a fourth endorsement from the Congressional Black Caucus on Tuesday. CBS News Campaign Reporter Stephanie Ramirez says this latest endorsement comes from Rep. Lacy Clay, the first elected official from Missouri to endorse the California senator, according to her campaign. Clay wrote in a Tuesday tweet, “Kamala has the #courage , vision and backbone to fight for equal justice, restore our democracy, and unite the American people. She shares my passion to strive for equal justice for all, instead of just for some…”
SEN. ELIZABETH WARREN: The Warren campaign has sandwiched the Massachusetts Senator’s Democratic debate appearance between town halls in Miami and Chicago. CBS News Campaign Reporter Zak Hudak says they’re the sort of events she has most excelled at to this point, and a new topic is likely to be the plan she released this morning to combat voter suppression and gerrymandering and to protect from foreign attacks on voting equipment. Among Warren’s latest batch of proposals are making election day a national holiday and allowing citizens to vote with a sworn statement rather than an ID. The plan hinges on an agreement she says she would make in which the federal government would pay for all of a state’s election administration costs in exchange for the state meeting the various federal standards she hopes to impose.

IN THE MIDDLE: Two sources confirmed a TIME report to CBS News campaign reporters Musadiq Bidar and Adam Brewster that Sen. Minority Leader Chuck Schumer called J.D. Scholten, who nearly knocked off Rep. Steve King in 2018, and told Scholten “we don’t need a primary” for Iowa’s 2020 Senate Race. The Democrats are trying to flip the seat Sen. Joni Ernst won in 2014 when longtime Democratic Sen. Tom Harkin retired. The DSCC and Emily’s List have already endorsed Theresa Greenfield in the Democratic primary against businessman Eddie Mauro and attorney Kimberly Graham. Greenfield ran for Congress in 2018, but lost her primary to Rep. Cindy Axne after her campaign manager admitted to forging signatures on documents to qualify for the ballot. Scholten says he will make a decision about his political future once Q2 filings are posted.
UP NORTH: CBS News Campaign Reporter Nicole Sganga saysabortion remains a heated issue in New Hampshire. The New Hampshire Democratic Party has launched a digital ad targeting Gov. Chris Sununu following his pro-life pick of Gordon MacDonald for New Hampshire’s Supreme Court, a judge with a history of representing pro-life lawmakers and constituencies. The digital advertisement, which will run on Twitter and Facebook, reads “We in New Hampshire and not Alabama.”One-in-three Americans rank abortion as a “top issue” in determining how they will cast their ballot in the upcoming 2020 election. According to a Monmouth University Poll released today, most Americans support access to abortion, with 32% who think it should always be legal and 31% who think it should be legal with some limitations. Last week, CBS News attended a meeting of the Greater Ossipee Democrats, attracting nearly 100 Granite Staters in the politically purple area of Tamworth, New Hampshire, for a “panel and community discussion of the medical, societal and personal implications of the recent laws passed in Alabama, Louisiana, and Georgia to restrict abortion.” The hot topic continues to mobilize female voters from across Carroll and Coos County — areas of the state with a higher concentration of independent voters that both Democrats and Republicans aim to win over in the 2020 presidential election.

LATINO VOTE: The 2020 National Latino Electorate Survey released today by UnidosUS that surveyed 1,854 eligible Latino voters found that Latino voters want to see a candidate who embraces the nation’s diversity, has a plan to get things done, and fights for the issues. CBS News notes that this is a Latino organization releasing a survey of all Latino voters (not just Democrats) on the eve of a Democratic debate. Interestingly, CBS News political unit Intern Julia Cherner says a candidate’s ability to speak Spanish was consistently found as the least important trait in candidates to Latino voters. When asked what issues an ideal candidate would address (open-ended question), the top three most common answers were jobs and the economy, healthcare, and immigration. Only 50 percent of self-identified Republicans surveyed are certain they will vote for Trump. The full report can be found here.
WOMEN AT WORK: 15 presidential candidates have signed a pledge to guarantee that fifty percent of their national security staff would be women if elected, says CBS News Political Unit AP Ellee Watson. The recently formed Leadership Council for Women in National Security (LWINS) started the pledge and have asked every presidential campaign including Republicans to sign on. Co-founder and former White House official Julianne Smith said in a LWINS statement, “In recent years, women have made many important strides in national security. But they continue to be underrepresented in Congress, on the Sunday talk shows, the boardroom and the Situation Room. LCWINS aims to help women at various stages throughout their career tackle some of the unique challenges they face in the workplace.” The 15 candidates who have signed the pledge are: Michael Bennet, Joe Biden, Cory Booker, Pete Buttigieg, Julian Castro, Kirsten Gillibrand, Kamala Harris, John Hickenlooper, Seth Moulton, Amy Klobuchar, Beto O’Rourke, Tim Ryan, Bernie Sanders, Eric Swalwell and Elizabeth Warren.
THE CLIMATE DEBATE: The Sunrise Movement, a youth environmental advocacy group, held a sit-in outside the Democratic National Committee’s headquarters in Washington, D.C. today, continuing their call for a 2020 debate specifically about climate change. Sunrise Movement communications director Stephen O’Hanlon told CBS Political Unit Broadcast Associate Aaron Navarro that at its peak about 100 members were there, and they’re prepared to stay the night. He also said the group will be watching the upcoming debates to see if the DNC and media “take [climate-change] seriously and treat it like an emergency.” The group has pushed this debate proposal before, which was rejected by DNC Chair Tom Perez. DNC spokeswoman Xochitl Hinojosa told CBS earlier this month that “While climate change is at the top of our list, the DNC will not be holding entire debates on a single issue.” O’Hanlon told CBS News, “All the major candidates think we should have a climate debate…quite frankly, for years the DNC leaders in the party have been taking millions of dollars from oil and gas executives and lobbyists that you can bet, don’t want a debate about climate change.” So far, CBS has counted 15 candidates that have endorsed a climate debate, including Sens. Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders, Washington Governor Jay Inslee and Vice President Joe Biden. Nearly two-thirds of manufactures are preparing their businesses for a possible recession, but just 27% of firms expect one to occur in the next 12 months, according to a survey by Chicago-based advisory firm Sikich LLP.
Among the 63% of companies taking steps to prepare for a downturn, the most common actions included increasing production efficiency, increasing the ability to quickly scale operations up or down and exploring new geographic markets.
The survey, conducted in April, garnered online responses from 310 companies. Around 94% of the respondents were based in the U.S., including 12% each in Wisconsin, Illinois and Ohio.
While the survey found just 27% of respondents said a recession is extremely or very likely in the next 12 months, there was a significant gap in the outlook between small and large firms. Just 21% of those with less than $500 million in annual revenue expect a recession while 49% of those above that threshold expect a downturn. Larger firms made up 21% of the survey sample.
Jerry Murphy, partner-in-charge for Sikich’s manufacturing and distribution services, said larger companies typically have more visibility into their future demand and also have more global exposure.
“They don’t often share that kind of visibility with their smaller suppliers, so the small and medium-sized businesses may not be learning of this slowdown or this pipeline as quickly,” Murphy said. “It’s not uncommon for them to learn about it rather quickly or abruptly.”
Regardless of size, Murphy said preparations for a recession are likely the result of a long economic expansion that executives expect will have to end at some point and memories of the last sharp downturn.
“The pain of 2008 and the Great Recession is still pretty vivid in most business owners and management teams and they learned a great deal from that experience,” Murphy said. “Preparation for an eventual slowdown, they know how to do (that) effectively and they’re taking steps so they don’t get caught off guard.”
At least one local measure has shown signs of a potential slowdown as well. The Milwaukee-area PMI, part of the Marquette-ISM Report on Manufacturing, dipped to 47.83 in May. Any reading below 50 indicates the manufacturing sector in the region is contracting. The index has been trending down for most of the last year. The similar but separate national ISM index has also been trending downward in recent months.
Executives in the Sikich survey were split on the potential impact of trade disputes and negotiations involving the U.S. and China, Canada, Mexico and other countries.
A plurality of executives, 38%, said the trade developments would have a positive impact on their business while 35% expected a negative impact.
Executives at larger companies and those with operations outside the U.S. were both more likely than smaller firms and those with only domestic operations to expect a positive impact. Just 25% of companies with no foreign operations expect a positive impact from trade talks.
Murphy acknowledged some companies may quietly benefit from the tariffs but said business owners and management teams are starting to become a little more concerned about the length of time it has taken to reach a deal on trade with China.
He said companies importing from China have seen a significant amount of erosion in their profit margin and will begin looking at moving to alternative sources if the tariffs stay in place.
“They did a lot of buying prior to some of the more drastic tariffs,” Murphy said. “I know clients were doing everything they could to get as much product into the United States or at least on the water to avoid the tariffs or the higher tariffs.”
He added that while inflation has remained relatively low, it could begin to move higher as the trade dispute drags on.
“I think that consumers will begin to see some of that passed on to them. We probably haven’t been in this economic cycle with the trade tensions or tariff long enough to maybe necessarily see the impact on the costs of goods,” Murphy said.

The concrete slab can be thought of as the wearing cap for the building pad and base course. A well compacted and smooth subgrade is critical to a successful slab. Slab formwork, jointing details, vapor barriers and reinforcing must be installed correctly for the slab to function as designed.
Building Pad and the Base Course
Typically the building pad and base course will be designed based on a local soils report and installed by the site contractor. A third-party inspecting agency normally will monitor installation to insure compliance to plans and specifications and confirm that moisture and density requirements are met. It is important that the concrete slab installer verify pad elevations and sub-base stability prior to starting the work. Conducting a proof roll prior to installing the base course and slab placement is always a good idea and will quickly identify soft spots and potential rutting. Most proof rolling is done using a loaded dump truck or similar heavily loaded wheeled equipment.
Major considerations when installing base course for slabs on grade:
Uniform slab thickness and correct elevation.
Correct concrete yield for slabs placed. We have always strived to maintain a 1% overage for slabs on grade.
Adequate compaction and surface smoothness to reduce under slab restraint and insure correct slab profile.
Proper backfill and compaction of excavations for plumbing and electrical lines, which should always be 2 in. to 4 in. below top of subgrade.
Trimming and detail of base course at slab edges, walls and columns.
Grading Tips
Control rolldown and compaction. Depending on base course thickness, local aggregates, moisture content, pad condition and grading/compacting equipment used, the difference in elevation of the base course can vary considerably from machine graded to final compacted base. Rolldown will vary daily and within slab placement area.
Know when to use static roll. Once the placement area has been graded and compaction/proof roll approved, do only static, (non-vibratory) rolling/compaction for touch up grading before and during concrete placement. Do not vibratory compact next to fresh concrete, (under seven days in age) as a rule of thumb.
It’s easier to bring material in than take it out. We recommend that building pad be +/- 1/10’ balanced prior to installation of base course.
Slip Sheets and Vapor Barriers
A slip sheet is a layer of material (usually plastic sheeting of 4-6 mil in. thickness) placed between the slab and subgrade to reduce friction between them. Oftentimes a double layer of material will be specified. A slip sheet is part of the slab design that allows the slab to move, especially during the curing and hydrating process. Vapor barriers are materials that will minimize the transmission of water vapor from the subgrade into the concrete slab. Vapor barriers are typically specified according to ASTM E 1745. Low density polyethylene film is commonly used, and a minimum thickness of 10 mils is recommended for reduced vapor transmission and durability during and after its installation.
Sometimes a granular blotter layer is specified between the underside of the concrete slab and the vapor barrier. Be advised that a blotter layer is generally not recommended due to the potential of water ponding under slab and being trapped by the vapor barrier.
There are several major considerations when installing slip sheets and vapor barriers, including:
Insure base course is smooth prior to installation.
Protect from puncture and abrasion.
Overlap edges correctly. Install per manufacturers recommendations. Vapor barriers will require taping of joints and special attention at penetrations, block-outs and walls.
Keep clean.
Additional Installation Tips
Double check that correct vapor barrier materials and thickness is being used.
Keep material flat and wrinkle free during installation of concrete.
Have additional material and repair items available during concrete placement.
Slab Forming, Jointing and Reinforcement
For the purpose of this article we will be discussing conventional slab edge and column block-out formwork solutions, the different doweling systems currently in use and light slab reinforcement installation.
Slab Forming Solutions
Dimensional lumber is the most common edge forming material in use today. The typically specified construction joint doweling systems are simple to use with wood forming members, and the top edge of a wood form can be easily beveled for more accurate placing and finishing. Steel and composite material forms are available, but adaptability to different jointing designs, ease of use and upfront costs oftentimes defers their use.
Major considerations for installing formwork for concrete slabs:
Maintaining top of slab elevation, FF/FL specification and joint straightness requirements.
Form to form joint and support.
Understand bracing requirements for system used and soil conditions to be encountered.
Consider reuse and stripping/cleaning requirements for the forming system used.
Is it “finisher friendly”? Are the stakes/braces below top of form? Is top of form beveled? Can a troweling machine safely overlap edge? Is there adequate room for workman to access edge of slab?
Tips for Installing Formwork
Stack and store forms properly.
Use good lumber and accessories.
Minimize hand grade trimming under forms.
Control benchmark.Third party survey crews will typically establish monuments and control points but temporary benchmarks will need to be transferred as concrete slab installation progresses and maintained for prep, forming and concrete placements.We would recommend all benchmarks be established, moved or transferred using an optical level in lieu of a laser.
Slab Jointing/Doweling
Slab dowels and rebar at construction joints in the majority of commercial, warehouse and light industrial projects are primarily for load transfer and to facilitate or manage slab movement.Dowels will either be cast into one slab edge or pocket forms will be used and dowels installed prior to next placement.Dowel baskets are used to provide load transfer at the contraction/control joints.Closed cell foam expansion joint material and bond-breakers are typically installed at walls, columns, fixed objects and penetrations.
Major considerations for installing construction joint dowels, rebar and dowel baskets:
Dowel alignment and straightness.
Ability to consolidate concrete around and ease of form stripping.
How dowel baskets will be installed and maintained during slab placement.
Having enough material on hand and proper storage.
Tips for Installation of Dowels and Dowel Baskets
Read the installation instructions for any proprietary doweling systems used and the plan details.So basic but oftentimes neglected.
You can’t just put the dowels in and leave it.Someone must be responsible for monitoring dowel installation and correcting dowel displacement during placement.

Slab Reinforcing
Reinforcement categories to be covered is mesh, rebar and fibers.Mesh is generally specified for light commercial projects, slabs on metal deck and as a work platform during installation and placement of structural slabs.Reinforcing can run the gamut from light # 3 rebar on wide spacings to double layer closely spaced mats of # 6 rebar.Fibers can be either steel or plastic of various lengths and configurations with different poundage requirements per cubic yard of concrete specified.
Mesh and rebar are typically chaired and supported in place during concrete placement.Fibers are added to concrete truck either at batch plant or on-site just prior to discharge.
Major considerations when installing mesh, rebar and fibers:
For mesh and rebar insure that overlap and wastage is accounted for when ordering.
Stability of subgrade when selecting chairing method.
Interface with placing operations.Method of concrete placement will impact rebar installation sequencing and bar support/chairing requirements.
How you are going to get the fibers in the truck and where.
Tips for Installing Mesh, Rebar and Fibers
Mesh is difficult to chair in place and hand pulling of mesh as a supplemental method of installation is recommended.
Rebar mats are easier to manage than individual bars tied in place.
Understand shop drawings and plan details.
Try to eliminate or minimize personnel climbing up and down the back of truck mixers while loading fiber.
Insure that fibers are loaded correctly into mixer trucks and properly mixed prior to discharge.
Slab Protection and Housekeeping
Primary concern is protection of work in place, work of other trades and a clean safe work area.Focus should be on slab edges, columns, walls and fixed equipment.
Concrete splatter, dirt and staining are major worries that must be addressed. Hot and cold weather protection activities may be required and access to slabs during curing period will have to be monitored and controlled.
