According to a new report, Amazon plans to ship Alexa-powered wireless earbuds in late 2019 to take on Apple’s AirPods.

“The headphones will look and act similar to AirPods, but people working on the product inside Amazon are striving for better audio quality, the people said,” a Bloomberg report explains. “Like the AirPods, the Amazon earbuds are designed to sit inside users’ ears without clips around the ear.”

The Amazon earbuds are notable for another reason: They will be Amazon’s first Alexa-powered wearable product.

Amazon is reportedly creating an Alexa-enabled set of fully wireless earbuds that could pose competition for Apple’s AirPods.

The buds will have Alexa built-in and ship as soon as the second half of 2019, Bloomberg sources said on Thursday. They’re expected to “look and act similar” to AirPods, complete with a charging case, but feature a stronger focus on audio fidelity. Black and gray colors may be on offer.

Both Apple and Android devices should be supported, which could increase the buds’ appeal. AirPods technically work with Android but lack key functions on that platform.

They will be overseeing officers in the streets and at U.S. Bank Stadium, with the goal of ensuring safety for everyone during one of the nation’s biggest annual events. The team has had a little practice.

Police will be using lessons learned and equipment obtained from when the Twin Cities hosted the Super Bowl last year. Officers from dozens of departments aided in the Super Bowl detail — which at times had a military atmosphere and proceeded without any major hitches.

“It is so rewarding to see all the puzzle pieces coming together after months and months of planning,” said Cydni Bickerstaff, Minneapolis Final Four Local Organizing Committee vice president of event operations. “We have set the table and are ready to host over 90,000 people.”

For police, one takeaway from the 2018 Super Bowl was the importance of the high-tech Multi-Agency Command Center, said Lt. Jon Kingsbury, the deputy public safety incident commander for the Final Four.

The command center is in a secret downtown Minneapolis location. It’s where decision-makers from various departments can view what’s happening on the streets in real time from the city’s public safety cameras, see the locations of officers on a large 3-D map and coordinate with each other face to face.

The center has been instrumental for recent big events and will be busy again during the Final Four games.

BIG CROWDS, BIG UNDERTAKING

Police are expecting the Final Four, and festivities surrounding it, to be safe and family friendly, Kingsbury said. Along with the games at the stadium, there will be a fan festival at the Minneapolis Convention Center, concerts at the Armory and a street fair along the Nicollet Mall.

The events from April 5-8 are expected to draw about 94,000 visitors, according to the Final Four Local Organizing Committee. The stadium will be able to hold 72,000 people.

To keep them safe, law enforcement from 23 local agencies have partnered with Minneapolis police to provide officers during the events. For the Super Bowl, the Minnesota National Guard helped with security; they won’t be during the Final Four.

More than 1,300 officers will be working — though not all at once — during the four days. On Saturday, what Kingsbury believes will be the busiest day, about 920 officers will be working.

Local police aren’t on the hook for staffing costs — the anticipated $1.3 million price tag was paid by the local organizing committee, a nonprofit acting as local planning partner for the event.

While there were some events in St. Paul and Bloomington for the Super Bowl, all the Final Four activities are concentrated in downtown Minneapolis.

“We’re so excited that the Lady Jacks have made the Sweet Sixteen, 10 pm start for us but we plan on cheering them on tonight and we’re really excited to see them go on and win and we’d love to see them in the Elite Eight,” Jacks fan, Reece Kurtenbach said.

“Many of us have followed the Jacks our entire life and it’s so exciting we’ve seen the final four tournament, the NCAA tournament every year and it’s even more exciting when one of your favorite teams has made it so far,” Kurtenbach added.

Right on campus the SDSU Alumni Association will be hosting a watch party for anyone that wants to watch the game.

“You know we are known for outstanding basketball teams especially the women’s teams they have really done us proud. For them to go to the Sweet Sixteen I think for many of us it’s not a surprise. I think that they just really want this,” SDSU Director of Development for arts, humanities and social science, Rina Reynolds said.

Uh, oh! Sunday, February 24, snowflakes greeted us as we left church. As long-time residents at Cottage Grove Lake, we have learned to go into survival mode when it snows. Inevitably, we will lose power, whatever the conditions. So, we made sure that we had groceries, bottled water and that the car was gassed up. We headed home, walked in the door, and the power went off. Groan.

Living in the country I have put to good use my Girl Scout motto to “Be Prepared.” And my husband was a Boy Scout. Together we make a great team. Following are some ways for all of us to be prepared for winter living. It may be a little late for this year but it’s never too late to be prepared. You may never need this stuff, but you’ll have it “just in case.”

We Kaisers have a small generator that enabled us to go 11 days without electricity. That still meant that we had no heat, no shower, no oven to cook in, no telephone and more. It also meant that we needed copious amounts of gasoline to keep Genny the generator running intermittently. 

Because I went to the grocery store just as the storm started, I had stocked up on bananas, bread, frozen stir fry meals, soups from the deli, canned meats, etc. Mostly we just ate simple stuff from the freezer because Genny generator allowed us to use the microwave and one burner on the stovetop. A sample recipe is at the end of this column.

Now, giving advice after a storm is sort of like locking the barn door after the horse has runaway. However,  just in case you need a be-prepared-refresher course, here are some basics to stock up on for another unexpected 3-11-day Snowmagedden:

Put meat, etc. in coolers outside in the snow. 

We had intermittent electric, so I put bowls of snow in our frig and freezer, changing daily. It worked!  

Whew! Now that we’re all up-to-date on how to stock up for a snow storm, let’s eat! Following is a one-pot chicken chili dish that everyone will love. 

WHITE CHICKEN CHILI

• 1 tablespoon vegetable oil

• 1 cup frozen whole kernel corn

• 1 large red bell pepper, diced (about 1 cup)

• 1 small onion, diced

• 1 Tablespoon chili powder

• 2 cups shredded cooked chicken OR 

• 1 can (12.5 oz) Swanson white chicken

• 1 can Campbell’s Cream of Chicken Soup

• 1 cup Pace Chunky Salsa

• 1 cup water

• 2 cans (15 ounces ea.) white cannellini beans, drained, rinsed

• 1 can tomatoes (with juice and liquid); or Rotel tomatoes.

Add garlic salt and pepper to taste

GARNISH:

• 2 green onions, sliced

• Cheddar Cheese to taste

Heat the oil in a 3-quart saucepan over medium-high heat.  Add corn, green peppers, diced onion and chili powder. Cook for 2 minutes.  Stir in the chicken.

Stir in the soup, salsa, water, tomatoes and beans in the saucepan and heat to a boil.  Reduce the heat to low.  Cover and simmer for awhile.  Serve hot, topped with the cheese and green onions.

Note: If you like a hotter chili, I substitute white chili beans for the cannellini. Season to your taste, garnish and serve with crackers. Serves 4-5.

With that victory, the Cavaliers advanced to the second round of the bracket for the fifth time in six years. The only exception in that stretch — last year’s historic loss to No. 16 seed UMBC in the opening round.

UVA avoided repeating that dubious history on Friday afternoon. Several reporters raised the question on Saturday of whether there was any relief that came with getting past the Runnin’ Bulldogs.

The Wahoos were quick to point out that it was only the first round — and that an Oklahoma team that put 95 points on the board against Ole Miss on Friday awaits UVA on Sunday night.

“The outside world is always going to try to put pressure on you, and sometimes you can find yourself putting pressure on yourself. But we’re just trying to have – Coach was referencing Friday Night Lights. ‘Clear eyes, full hearts,'” UVA junior guard Kyle Guy said. “So just trying to focus on what’s important. This year we got the job done, so just looking forward to playing Oklahoma.”

“I’ve never been to the Sweet 16. I’ve never been to the Elite Eight. Definitely never been to the Final Four,” said UVA junior guard Ty Jerome. “So for me it’s like, getting out of the first round is good. It’s awesome. You can’t take it for granted because you play a good team every round. But everyone’s really excited to play tomorrow.”

The early scouting report on the Sooners from the UVA locker room on Saturday was that they were big and athletic. Some players compared Oklahoma to Florida State, who beat the Cavaliers in last week’s ACC semifinals.

UVA players acknowledged that the short window for preparation comes with advancing in the NCAA Tournament. Some also pointed out that the Cavaliers went 3-0 in Saturday-Monday turnaround situations during ACC play — winning at North Carolina, at Virginia Tech and at Syracuse after playing at home just two days prior to each of those games.

“I’m sure Coach has said that the schedule didn’t do us any favors, or the ACC didn’t do us any favors,” Guy said. “But actually it turns out that they did us a great favor in preparing us for March.”

“I mean, that’s the tournament. You’ve got a day to prepare, or on the front end of it you have a few days,” said UVA senior center Jack Salt. “It’s hard on the players, hard on the coaches, but everyone’s in the same boat. So you’re not really to a disadvantage.”

“We know what it’s going to be. We know we might be a little tired, we might have to fight through a little fatigue,” said UVA sophomore guard De’Andre Hunter. “But the coaches have done a great job preparing us in the past, so I know they’re going to do a great job today preparing us, so we’re going to be ready.”
