I hiked the 225-mile John Muir trail and completed a two-week southern loop of Yellowstone using the same piece of plastic visqueen as my only shelter. At the time, I was in my early-20s, just out of college, broke and trying to backpack long distances. My gear choices were directly related to my financial resources!

Today, even though I have several backpacking tents, I still frequently use a tarp. In some cases, such as making certain snow shelters, or when you need to go light, a tarp may be the best shelter choice.

Tarp shelters are only limited by your imagination. Regardless of how you’re rigging yours, here are a few proven tips I’ve learned that can help make your shelter more secure.

This timber hitch knot is effective for securing one end of a tarp. The harder it's pulled the more secure it gets. The knot is easy to untie.

This timber hitch knot is effective for securing one end of a tarp. The harder it’s pulled the more secure it gets. The knot is easy to untie.

1 – Start by learning a few simple knots, and practice tying them until you can produce an effective  knot in the dark or in bad weather. Chances are, that’s when you’ll most desperately need a quick emergency shelter, and you don’t want to be fumbling around.

A very simple, effective shelter is the A Frame. Learn how to set one up. Basically, the A Frame is  a line set up between two anchor points, with a tarp draped over it. An A Frame looks like a pup tent without ends.

These two knots will help you quickly set up a line between two anchor points.

Use a timber hitch first to secure one end of your line. This friction knot is simple to tie, and the more pressure is put on the knot,  the tighter it gets.

This trucker hitch allows the center line to be tightened by pulling on the tag end.

Use a trucker hitch at the other end. This hitch allows you to tighten the centerline effectively by pulling on the tag, or loose, end of the cord. This hitch allows you to stretch a rope as tight as a banjo string. View the video.

2 – Choose your campsite with an eye toward pitching a tarp. Try to have at least one solid object to secure one end. Always check for dead or fallen branches above and around any potential tarp site! Ideally, the ground should be slightly slanted so rain will drain easily. You may have to dig trenches around the sides to aid drainage.

3 – Insert a small stick in a rope loop in the grommet.

The concept is simple. The line is threaded, double, through a grommet, and a stick is placed in the loop. This anchors the tarp at a particular point on the line, while at the same time allowing the rope to move and be tightened. The tarp can be evenly tightened and the stick/rope combination protects the grommets from being torn in heavy winds.

During one windy, rainy campout, we used this technique (I learned it  at a PeterKummerfeldt  survival seminar) to secure a tarp over the

Use a small stick to help secure the main center line. When pressure is put on one end, the line will tighten evenly, keeping the grommets from being torn out.

cooking area and gear. The rain continued for two days, and the sticks and paracord kept the tarp taut and effective so the water drained off easily. In another instance, during a two-week campout, I left a tarp set up in this manner for 14 days. Other than the paracord stretching some, there were no problems at all.

Aluminum tent stakes weigh virtually nothing. Combined with a tarp, and about 25 feet of paracord, the items can be made into an effective emergency shelter.

Aluminum tent stakes weigh virtually nothing. Combined with a tarp, and about 25 feet of paracord, the items can be made into an effective emergency shelter.

4 – Take along aluminum tent stakes. They weigh hardly anything, and can be used to stake down the corners and sides of the tarp. While I typically use rocks to anchor the corner of a tarp, sometimes there aren’t any handy.

5 – Don’t forget your walking stick, ski poles or trekking poles as potential  supports for a tarp shelter. In a pinch, you can use a pair of these sticks or poles to make an A-frame shelter.

6 – Keep your corner grommets from tearing out. This tip came from my friend Bob Patterson, of Mankato, MN. Bob is a retired firefighter, and knots, ropes and lashings are his thing.

The idea here is to disperse the stress and strain, so the corner grommet doesn’t get torn out by a blast of wind or prolonged gusts. Basically, you thread a piece of paracord between the three grommets on a corner. The loops that result are threaded through a carabiner.  With the stress dispersed between three grommets, there is not an instance when the full brunt of a gust can be focused on one grommet. Check out the video.

All these tips can contribute to an efficient shelter that can get you out of the nasty weather quickly.  That hasty tarp shelter may be what tips the scales in favor of your survival.

Tornado survival tips: Weather the storm safely

Home

I’ve always been afraid of tornadoes, even before I heard of the Wicked Witch of the West and: “Surrender Dorothy!” If you live in an area with the potential for tornadoes or cyclones, you owe it to yourself and your family to be prepared!

Anybody who grew up or lived near Gilbert, in Central Iowa, is familiar with the destructive, whirling wind patterns. The movie “Twister” was filmed about 40 miles away from our family farm, and all the locals can tell storm stories.

One year, our neighbors lost their house to a funnel cloud. Across the road from them, a barn was blown away. But the grand-daddy of all Iowa tornadoes, though, happened on June 13, 1976, when a tornado rated F-5 by the National Weather Service hit nearby Jordon.

Jordon, Iowa Tornado, emergency shelter from tornadoes ISU photo

My Dad saw this funnel cloud headed in his direction when he was cultivating corn. He abandoned the tractor and ran for shelter. (Iowa State University photo)

My siblings were home on the family farm, and noticed the weather was hot and humid and everything was getting really still. Dad was cultivating in the cornfield and saw the funnel cloud. He abandoned the tractor and headed for the house.

“It was the first time I ever saw Dad run,” my brother Mike recalls. “As soon as he was in earshot he started yelling for us to get to the basement.”

The NWS indicated that the damage path of the Jordon tornado was roughly 880 yards wide and 21 miles long. The twister destroyed virtually every house and business building in Jordon, but all residents survived. The tornado was accompanied by an F-3 anticyclonic tornado a few miles away.

Shortly after the Jordon tornado, Dad built a concrete re-enforced storm shelter under the front porch. The neighbors were told where the shelter was, and were invited to take refuge there if need be. And, if the house was blown away, they would know where to look for survivors!

I’m still afraid of tornadoes, and if you live in an area where tornadoes are possible, you should be too! You owe it to yourself and your loved ones to be prepared, so you will know what to do.

So what is the first step?

Tornado approaching National Weather Service

An approaching tornado is terrifying: Know what to do before hand, so you don’t panic and make fatal mistakes. (National Weather Service photo)

Start by learning about tornadoes and what you can do to survive them. Here’s some suggestions from the FEMA:

Before the potential tornado, be alert to changing weather conditions.

  • Listen to the national weather channel or to commercial radio or television newscasts for the latest information. You could also buy a Weather Radio
that plays weather news all the time.
  • Look for approaching storms
  • Look for the following danger signs:
    • Dark, often greenish sky
    • Large hail
    • A large, dark, low-lying cloud (particularly if rotating)
    • Loud roar, similar to a freight train.

If you see approaching storms or any of the danger signs, be prepared to take shelter immediately.

Here’s a survival scenario learning exercise. You’re aware there is a storm watch with potential twisters, and you’re keeping a lookout.

Then someone spots a funnel cloud headed in your direction – what’s the first thing you need to do? (And don’t depend on others – in any crowd, in any urban or wilderness survivalemergency, about 80 percent of the people there will have to be told what to do)

Tornado awareness

One choice might be (Please bear with me if I’m starting to sound like a broken record!) to start with STOP (Stop, Think, Observe and Plan), the survival mindset exercise.

You can’t think if you have panicked, and you must force yourself to calm down. Then, make a plan.

That’s where the knowledge part of your wilderness survival gear comes in. Instead of drawing a blank about what to do next, remember this advice from the FEMA. These suggestions are part of your survival kit, and will give you an idea of how to respond.

Tornado weather: When a weather advisory is broadcast, keep an eye out for trouble!

When a weather advisory is broadcast, keep an eye out for trouble!

  • If you are in a building: Go to a pre-designated shelter area such as a safe room, basement, storm cellar, or the lowest building level. If there is no basement, go to the center of an interior room on the lowest level (closet, interior hallway) away from corners, windows, doors, and outside walls. Put as many walls as possible between you and the outside. Get under a sturdy table and use your arms to protect your head and neck. Do not open windows.
  • If you’re in a mobile home: Get out immediately and go to the lowest floor of a sturdy, nearby building or a storm shelter. Mobile homes, even if tied down, offer little protection from tornadoes.
  • If you’re outside with no shelter: Lie flat in a nearby ditch or depression and cover your head with your hands. Be aware of the potential for flooding. Don’t get under an overpass or bridge. You are safer in a low, flat location.

If you’re caught in a public building or school, FEMA suggests you get to an interior room or hall or the ground floor.

(It could be dark, so hopefully, you’ll have your keychain survival flashlight in your pockets.  The person with the flashlight, who acts like he/she knows what he is doing automatically, becomes the leader. Know where you’re going!)

Avoid halls that open to the outside, or any places with free-span ceiling that could collapse such as an auditorium or gym.

It’s not true that mobile home parks attract tornadoes. But, it is virtually impossible to secure a trailer to a foundation well enough for it to withstand tornado-speed winds.

And above all, don’t do stupid things. Don’t stand in the yard videoing the approaching cloud – the flying debris can kill you before you realize you’re in danger.

I’ve seen oat straw driven into a tractor tire, and a 78 phonograph stuck in a telephone pole by the force of tornado winds. Don’t waste time taking things out of your home if you have to evacuate.

In Iowa, with its precise road system laid out in square mile grids, many people would park during storms at a crossroads, with their vehicle engines idling. If they spotted a tornado, they would drive off at a 90 degree angle from the funnel cloud.

Exercising the wisdom of teenagers everywhere, some of my friends would gather at popular crossroads, just to have a chance at outrunning a storm. According to the NWS, the average speed of a tornado is about 30 mph, but they travel as fast as 70 mph, and they can change directions without warning.

The experts recommend that you never try to outrun a tornado in urban or congested areas. Instead, leave the vehicle immediately for safe shelter.

Farm kids were taught early to seek refuge in a culvert under the road if  they get caught in the open during a twister. I don’t know anybody who ever actually did that, but it seems like a good idea. If nothing else, the culvert would offer some protection from flying debris.

Basically, if you found a safe spot and hunkered down until the wind quit blowing, you should be OK. If you were in a building that blew down, emergency personnel will probably be on the scene shortly after the all clear sirens go off.

Recovering from a disaster is usually a gradual process, according to FEMA. Safety is a primary issue, as are mental and physical well-being. Stay away from the rubble and don’t touch any fallen electrical wires.

Then, be thankful – you’ve experienced one of nature’s most dramatic and deadly displays. And you’re alive to tell the tale!

I’m hiking in the high mountains in the summer. In addition to being a fishing enthusiast, I also love eating the freshly-caught fish.

A favorite cooking method of mine relies on aluminum foil and will work virtually anywhere.

Small fish are easily cooked in a wrapping of aluminum foil over a grill or campfire.

Small fish are easily cooked in a wrapping of aluminum foil over a grill or campfire.

The technique is simple and easy, and here’s how you can adapt it to your next successful fishing expedition:

You will need a cleaned and gutted pan-sized fish (defined as a smallish one that will fit in a frying pan),some aluminum foil, butter, a lemon and salt and pepper. You will cook the fish over a grill or directly on lighted campfire coals.

Sprinkle the cavity of the fish with salt and pepper, and put a slice of lemon and a pat of butter on the top. Roll everything in foil, and cook on a grill or over charcoal for about five to ten minutes on each side. This is not an exact science: If you see steam coming out of the foil at some point, the dish is probably done.

To eat, use a fork to peel the cooked fish away from the bones.

Open the foil wrap, and remove the bones with a fork. Delicious!

Open the foil wrap, and remove the bones with a fork. Delicious!

Another great way to enjoy small fish is to clean and gut them, roll in Bisquick or some other pancake mix, and fry in a skillet over a one-burner backpack stove.

Whatever way you decide to prepare your fish, think about this while you’re cooking: You are doing something most people never get a chance to do. You are being given a gift.  Enjoy it and be thankful!

(We got this feedback from Melinda at http://www.preppershomejournal.blogspot.com : We love foil cooking here. Our favorite recipe is chicken drumsticks marinated in lemon juice and tucked in with potatoes, carrots, green beans and corn. We wrap it all up together and cook until the chicken is done. Yum!)

Video review: PRI-D complete fuel treatment for kerosene

Remember Y2K? I have five gallons of kerosene left over from that wake-up call, and now I can continue to use it.

by Leon Pantenburg

Y2K was the first inkling for many that life might not always be the same. The scenario, if you recall, is that all computers were supposed to re-set, stop, quit working or something at midnight, 1999. Then chaos would happen, as everything computer-dependent went down.

That disaster didn’t happen, of course, because of massive effort to fix the problem before it occurred.

For me, Y2K was the first time I systematically prepped for disaster. By the time New Year’s Eve 2000 rolled around, my family was ready.  We have continued to maintain that readiness, and still systematically use our food storage.

But I don’t use a lot of kerosene. I bought 10 gallons in 1999, and have only managed to use up about five gallons in my kerosene lanterns when I go dog-walking in the dark.

So when Power Research Inc. approached me with the idea of testing a kerosene fuel treatment, I was interested.

I was sent a sample of the PRI-D, the diesel treatment, which also works on kerosene. According to the company brochure: the PRI fuel treatments provide an “exclusive thermal stability chemistry.” A simple definition, according to PRI, is that the more thermally stable a fuel is, the less unburned carbon is formed during the combustion process. The more completely the fuel burns, PRI claims, the more power, efficiency and reduced emissions.

My testing process was simple. I took out about a quart of the the 13-year-old kerosene  and put it aside. Then I treated the rest of the four-or-five gallons in the container with PRI-D.

For testing, I used two identical Deitz lanterns. To be as fair as possible, I washed both chimneys and trimmed the wicks, then filled one lantern with untreated and the other with PRI-D treated kerosene.  I lighted them side-by-side and observed.

I am always amazed that the untreated 13-year-old kerosene even lights. In this test, both samples worked well.

I could tell a difference, though in the treated lantern. I could turn the wick and flame up higher before it started to smoke at the tip of the flame. Both samples smelled like kerosene burning – big revelation – but the treated sample smelled less strong.

The PRI-D is easy to use. My 32-ounce container will treat 512 gallons of diesel or kerosene, so one bottle will last a long time.

Do you need this product?

Well, if you’re storing bulk diesel or kerosene for when some emergency occurs, I’d say this might be a wise choice to have in your preparedness gear.

As it stands right now, I know I can depend on my Y2K kerosene for lighting in my lamps and lanterns  if the electricity goes out for an extended period of time. And that’s a good feeling.
