I’m hiking in the high mountains in the summer. In addition to being a fishing enthusiast, I also love eating the freshly-caught fish.

A favorite cooking method of mine relies on aluminum foil and will work virtually anywhere.

Small fish are easily cooked in a wrapping of aluminum foil over a grill or campfire.

The technique is simple and easy, and here’s how you can adapt it to your next successful fishing expedition:

You will need a cleaned and gutted pan-sized fish (defined as a smallish one that will fit in a frying pan),some aluminum foil, butter, a lemon and salt and pepper. You will cook the fish over a grill or directly on lighted campfire coals.

Sprinkle the cavity of the fish with salt and pepper, and put a slice of lemon and a pat of butter on the top. Roll everything in foil, and cook on a grill or over charcoal for about five to ten minutes on each side. This is not an exact science: If you see steam coming out of the foil at some point, the dish is probably done.

To eat, use a fork to peel the cooked fish away from the bones.

Open the foil wrap, and remove the bones with a fork. Delicious!

Another great way to enjoy small fish is to clean and gut them, roll in Bisquick or some other pancake mix, and fry in a skillet over a one-burner backpack stove.

Whatever way you decide to prepare your fish, think about this while you’re cooking: You are doing something most people never get a chance to do. You are being given a gift. Enjoy it and be thankful!

That disaster didn’t happen, of course, because of massive effort to fix the problem before it occurred.

For me, Y2K was the first time I systematically prepped for disaster. By the time New Year’s Eve 2000 rolled around, my family was ready. We have continued to maintain that readiness, and still systematically use our food storage.

But I don’t use a lot of kerosene. I bought 10 gallons in 1999, and have only managed to use up about five gallons in my kerosene lanterns when I go dog-walking in the dark.

So when Power Research Inc. approached me with the idea of testing a kerosene fuel treatment, I was interested.

I was sent a sample of the PRI-D, the diesel treatment, which also works on kerosene. According to the company brochure: the PRI fuel treatments provide an “exclusive thermal stability chemistry.” A simple definition, according to PRI, is that the more thermally stable a fuel is, the less unburned carbon is formed during the combustion process. The more completely the fuel burns, PRI claims, the more power, efficiency and reduced emissions.

My testing process was simple. I took out about a quart of the the 13-year-old kerosene and put it aside. Then I treated the rest of the four-or-five gallons in the container with PRI-D.

For testing, I used two identical Deitz lanterns. To be as fair as possible, I washed both chimneys and trimmed the wicks, then filled one lantern with untreated and the other with PRI-D treated kerosene. I lighted them side-by-side and observed.

I am always amazed that the untreated 13-year-old kerosene even lights. In this test, both samples worked well.

I could tell a difference, though in the treated lantern. I could turn the wick and flame up higher before it started to smoke at the tip of the flame. Both samples smelled like kerosene burning – big revelation – but the treated sample smelled less strong.

The PRI-D is easy to use. My 32-ounce container will treat 512 gallons of diesel or kerosene, so one bottle will last a long time.

Do you need this product?

Well, if you’re storing bulk diesel or kerosene for when some emergency occurs, I’d say this might be a wise choice to have in your preparedness gear.

As it stands right now, I know I can depend on my Y2K kerosene for lighting in my lamps and lanterns if the electricity goes out for an extended period of time. And that’s a good feeling.

I learned about the Iceman soon after he was discovered, and am fascinated with the whole story anyway. But of particular interest to me is the personal survival kit Ozi carried in a leather pouch on his belt.

There are a few other techniques that I use to get ready to navigate with my GPS receiver.

Every GPS receiver can act strangely on occasion. Take some precautions to make sure it doesn’t happen to you in the field.

While driving to camp, turn on the receiver and place it on the dashboard. If the GPS hasn’t been used for several months or if the user has traveled a great distance since last use, the unit needs to initialize and update satellite data received from the GPS constellation. If that is not possible, allow the receiver to process satellite data for 10-15 minutes in an area where the sky view is open and not blocked by terrain or forest canopy.

Second, give your receiver the time to do its job, especially with older receivers. For example, with an older GPS (my 10 year old Garmin 12CX) before marking a waypoint I will ensure that at least 4 satellites are being tracked and that the horizon isn’t completely obstructed by canopy. While my friends might have been able to mark waypoints considerably faster, I am going to give mine the time to accomplish the task. I will evaluate the estimated position error and if the value is getting smaller I will just wait until it steadies up.

Third, I tend to navigate through the backcountry with my GPS powered up, all day, during a day hike. This allows me to record a track and keeps my position data current. Should I be hiking the length of the Pacific Crest Trail, battery consumption would be a concern. That said, for my long day jaunts, battery conservation isn’t really an issue.

Older models, and those without an electronic compass, require motion to develop heading and bearing data. For example, when returning to a waypoint/destination, take a few steps and observe the display changes and adjust as necessary. Once the GPS has settled on the correct bearing to the waypoint, use your compass to back up your navigation. (And always carry a map and compass along, even if you’re using a GPS!)

Remember to calibrate the electronic compass each time batteries are replaced.

Blake Miller has made a career out of staying found and knowing where he is at all times. His formal navigation training began when he joined the U.S. Navy in 1973. He served as an officer aboard several Navy ships over his twenty-year career; many of those tours included the duty of Navigator. Blake began working with satellite navigation systems at sea in 1976, culminating with the then-new Global Positioning Systems aboard the Battleship WISCONSIN in early 1990.

In 1998 Blake started Outdoor Quest, a business dedicated to backcountry navigation and wilderness survival. Blake has taught classes to wild land firefighters, state agency staffs, Search and Rescue team members, hunters, hikers, skiers, fishermen and equestrians. He regularly teaches classes through the Community Education programs at Central Oregon (Bend) and Chemeketa (Salem, OR) Community Colleges.

As a volunteer, Blake teaches navigation and survival classes, to students in the local school district and conservation groups. He is a member of a Search and Rescue team.

In a survival situation, I hope to “Flick My BIC,” and take care of any firemaking needs. Duct tape is useful for everything, and makes a pretty decent firestarter. Small laminated photograph of family and/or note in gear: I opened my duffel bag at elk camp in the middle of nowhere, Idaho, several years ago to find little notes from my 10-year old daughter stuck in pockets, rolled-up socks, and in my book.

I put all those notes in my survival gear before heading out into the backcountry. Sentiments such as “I love you, Dad” and “Dad! Come home safe!” reminded me to be safe, and how much I had to lose if I got lost or injured in the backcountry.

These little reminders may keep you from giving up, and may be the deciding factor in any survival situation. The cost: virtually nothing. Value: priceless.
